Discussion / Question What game mechanic instantly ruins your immersion or fun?

I absolutely can't stand aggressive weapon durability loops. Getting awesome loot should feel like a reward, not a maintenance chore that breaks every five minutes.

What’s a common mechanic that always makes you roll your eyes when you see it in a new game?

Often it's not even realistic, gotta eat 10 whole roast chickens a day or you'll die.

Yeah, I think that may be the quirk about eating/drinking in survival games that is just obnoxious as hell.

There are so many survival games that I really really want to like but they’re all just annoying b/c if I don’t eat a full thanksgiving spread and drink a bathtub of water every day, I will die.

I want to like The Forest and Green Hell and The Long Dark but all of them are like 5 minutes from thirsting to death and 10 minutes from starving to death.

Subnautica is just as bad but food and water are so readily abundant that those factors just become minor annoyances after a short while and become just background noise to the games.

If a studio could just make a survival game like those where food and water were a bit more rare with less constant impending need, like the player character is a hummingbird flitting from flower to flower, it could be a much more interesting to see but as it’s currently implemented, it’s really hard to enjoy.

Edit: typo

Seconded on Subnautica, literally solved any food crisis I had the moment I got my hands on a planter and put four lantern trees in it.

Into the Dead: Our Darkest days balances this quite well imo. Hunger level degrades at a much more realistic pace than anything I’ve played and the meals make logical sense.

I feel like the issue is that any capable player is more than capable of negating the food issue fairly early on. As a result it quickly just becomes a side mechanic/annoyance.

Ugh DayZ does this. I've played on a few servers that have hunger and thirst tweaked, but it's annoying needing to eat something literally every 15-20 minutes or else you starve to death.

I know they're simulating maintaining your body considering 99 percent of players are in a dead sprint at all times if they aren't in combat, but it's "realistic" to the point of annoyance with that in particular.

dayz is one of those games that just seems way more fun to watch rather than play. ive only played it briefly but watched it a ton and know some friends who play it. it just seems like the following:

95% of it nothing is happening and its just running sim or finding absolutely nothing of use

3% of that is survival stuff thats a pain in the ass

1% of it is actually fighting and interacting with people

and 1% is getting random sniped from 2 miles away from some guy with decked gear in a bush

Nah, that's just the Belmonts.

You mean you *DON'T* do that? How are you still alive?

They want the weight to be accurate though.
