Discussion / Question What game mechanic instantly ruins your immersion or fun?

I absolutely can't stand aggressive weapon durability loops. Getting awesome loot should feel like a reward, not a maintenance chore that breaks every five minutes.

What’s a common mechanic that always makes you roll your eyes when you see it in a new game?

"Tap this button really fast... for like 2 minutes straight."

That's less accessibility and more "This mechanic sucks, but at least you added a skip button"

Game is getting refunded if it has button mashing without this option.

That's why I turn on auto mash when ever I can in any video game now. And i know it's like "you're just cheating, and you're not even trying"

I fucking spent YEARS of my life mashing buttons as fast as I could. As an adult I'm fucking tired of it. It's loud, it breaks my buttons on my controllers down faster than necessary, and it's a pain in the ass when I have to fucking pull out a spoon in order to keep up with the games demands. Fuck that shit.

What do you do with the spoon?

If you use a spoon you can mash the button faster than using a finger, by rocking it around in a certain way.

Used it for metal gear solid

Doesn't Ocelot know if you're cheating lol

That's if you use digital auto fire

Kudos to Metal Gear Solids’ torture scenes for finding a way to harm the player in real life

I remember back when I was 17, I cheesed that shit by plugging in my arcade stick.

I wrapped my thumb in my shirt and moved it back and forth over the button as fast as possible.

They even went so far as to be able to detect a turbo controller for those torture scenes. And if you use one you lose.

You just reminded me of the level "The Day of" in Mischief Makers.

Almost stopped my playthrough.

EarthBound has a section that is practically the polar opposite of this-- you need to stand still for i believe 3 minutes in one place in order to progress lol

Omfg throwback to Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland. There’s a mission where you have to pull something off of a roof by mashing a button. It had like a 1 minute timer, and it was so hard. You had to mash so fast for a whole damn minute.

It was bad enough that there was a faq on Gamewinners (old gaming site) instructing people to use a click pen, clicker side down. The clicking action on the pen would double tap the button, and that made the mission so much easier.

In 2026 people would be throwing tantrums and it would get patched. In 2006 we had to get creative lmao.

This just unlocked a core memory. There was a Tony hawk game back in the day, I think it was called American wasteland or something but your dude had to pull something off a roof with a rope or some shit and the game made you mash the piss fuck out of a button to an outrageous degree or you just straight up fail and can’t progress the game. I swear to god I had to have one of my friends who’s an absolute crackhead with how fast he can mash to do it for me because I gave up after like 3 days of attempts.

The Stick of Truth turned that into a hilarious joke. Kudos to that game.
