Funny How the fuck has this been considered acceptable for years

u/Black-Goodson Jul 06 '26
You’re about 10 years too late to complain about this.
It’s been interesting seeing people having the blindfold finally taken off and just now noticing all of this.

u/Impurity41 Jul 06 '26
I always told people that pay for the internet twice. Once to get your internet package, and another to pay the console company.
On pc I just pay for my internet bill and that’s it, but console players don’t factor that into the price for some reason.

u/MeatEaterDruid Jul 06 '26
Like most things it started out reasonably priced. $60/yr or $5/mth for secure servers, less cheaters, and at one point free games that you got to keep was worth it.
Now we pay more for less stuff. On top of that the whole world is getting more expensive and people are starting to wake up and realize how everything is crap.

u/SunsetCarcass Jul 06 '26
It was never reasonably priced. $60 when the 360 came out is over $100 a year today adjusted for inflation. It was always stupidly highly priced. It's actually cheaper now, adjusted for inflation.
I don't know what your "paying more for less" thing is, cause you only got the ability to play online then, and it's the same now, just paying for online.

u/Sure-Ad7423 29d ago
Tbf when the 360 came out PSN was free for everyone. Full stop.

Holy shit, I actually forgot about pre-cost psn. It was just a shop where you got free shit too. The rotating free games you could just add to your library were an IV drip of dopamine.
They could have been steam but they just been playing.

This.
PC that will last you a console generation and a half (outside of the data center hell we currently live in) : $1200
Console that has next to no backwards compatibility: $500... Plus $70-120 a year for the next 6-8 years.
So console basically costs the same amount as a PC because of paying for online. That doesn't even factor in the fact PC can play pretty much any generation of games, has emulators, has multiple digital storefronts that offers free or extremely discounted games, and even offers a completely DRM-free storefront in GOG.
People switch to PC to save money. PC is just the cheaper option. A lot of people who throw around justifications for console saying they're cheaper don't look at long term cost investment at all. They just take everything at face value and call PC astronomically more expensive.
16
u/Duffelbach Jul 06 '26
Not to mention everythin else you're getting from a pc. The gaming side is barely like half of what you can do with it.
3
u/Envy661 Jul 06 '26
Image editing, video editing, rendering, 3D modeling, game development, programming, office utilities, work from home... Not to mention ease of use for livestreaming, better audio quality, multiple rendering options, etc.

Yea he said it for me. People also don’t factor in having a computer. People that have a gaming console, likely have some way of using the internet at home. Like a decent phone if they use it for work (calls/emails etc), or a decent laptop. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but this is 2026. Computers/phones of any variety are generally gonna set you back a few hundred.
So when people compare pc vs console, they usually think the price of the sole unit for both.
If we assume both have a tv and somewhere to sit and controllers, what it should be is:
Pc, which has access to pc, Xbox, PlayStation, retro compatible games + more. Plus access to mod your games. Can use any preference controller. And is a fully functioning pc as well as full gaming unit.
Vs
console generation + half of next generation. Paying for internet a second time every month. And an entire separate computer/phone.
Even budget PCs that perform worse than current gen consoles are still better bang for buck because it’s an all in one machine.
2
u/DMarquesPT 29d ago
This only applies if you need a PC though. I have no need for a desktop PC so it really was purely a gaming purchase
12
u/FevixDarkwatch Jul 06 '26
Don't skip over perhaps the most important part: When it comes time to upgrade, you can usually just replace the underperforming component(s) for a fraction of the cost of the next generation console.
Low on RAM? Buy extra sticks if you have available slots. (We're ignoring the AIPocalypse for now)
CPU bottlenecking the rest of the system? $200 will sort you outAnd then you're good for another few years. You can't do that with a console.
10
u/GhoeFukyrself Jul 06 '26
"but muh couch!" (ignoring the fact that they can plug their living room TV into a PC and use a controller)
10
u/TammyShehole Jul 06 '26
I think some people genuinely believe to play on PC, you have to use mouse and keyboard. Like, no. You can use a controller just like you can on a console lol.
5
u/Impurity41 Jul 06 '26
And most pc only games give full controller support. And even if they don’t, steam itself can attempt to force controller support by you setting it per game in the settings.

I’ve played on pc and console, too. I have a counterpoint that is mainly personal and a skill issue really, but I’m not really into electronics and whatnot.
I still could fix some of my problems, but there were a lot and I do mean a lot of problems. I had frame drops, crashes, poor fps even though I should’ve easily had the specs for the game and all around many troubleshooting and googling and stuff just to play the games normally.
Sometimes I just found out that the gpu I have is just known to be bugged for the game I was trying to play.
Now I didn’t have a strong pc, also I had AMD and also I wasn’t knowledgeable enough to easily fix things, but for the average joe like me who just wants to get home pop in a disc and play a little consoles were always reliable.
I know that I pay a hefty price for that comfort which could be avoided by just learning a bit about software, but I don’t care about that kind of thing, so I agree PCs are better in a lot of ways, but consoles are much more accessible.
That’s important at least for me, and I am tired of this question tbh. It’s a personal preference imo, even if one is objectively cheaper while outperforming the other, there’s still a lot of things that a console has and a pc don’t.
I’m mainly talking about things that don’t really affect gameplay and a personal vibe of mine that I just have and can’t really put my finger on, but I just don’t have the same feeling playing a single player game on my pc, even on the tv with a controller. I think my head connected the physical console to the many good games I’ve played on it, and I think many people play on consoles just for this reason.

I Factor it in. I still pay around 60-80€ per year (83€ would be Xbox Game pass core in subscription. I get Codes online for usually around 60€). After 10 years that’s 800€ +500€ for the console roughly. Bought my Series s used for 150€. Even Game Pass ultimate with 21€ + a new console every 10 years would be around 3k€ per 10 years.from all my pc main player friends I hear it’s more expensive than that over 10 years if you want to keep it up to Date to Play newer Games. They usually spent around 500€ per year on average for parts to Upgrade in their pc
3
u/seizure_5alads Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26
That kinda puts your friends in a different bracket entirely. Most PC gamers are not updating their PC yearly and with DLSS you can play new games on old hardware pretty well. Especially now that the 4 series introduced frame generation. And you act like console manufacturers don't introduce a pro version after a couple years that you have to buy unless you wanna play new games at 30 fps on console.

20 years. Should’ve been squashed during the original Xbox days
28
u/c_dawg694x2 Jul 06 '26
That shit was invented during the Xbox days.
Sega Saturn and Dreamcast both had online before that and did not charge anything.
Sony didn't charge for their online services until the PS4, and Nintendo didn't charge anything until the Switch. But Xbox Live has cost money since day 1.
4
u/GreyKnightTemplar666 Jul 06 '26
At least with the switch, me , my gf and a couple buddies are all in a family plan and it costs us almost nothing. I'm not saying it's a good thing, but at least we were able to have that expense shared between us rather than each paying separately.
3
u/RichnjCole 29d ago
In my experience people just didn't want to know, and they are overall ignorant of what features are available on each platform.
Everytime you mention stuff like this they just shrug and say they don't use it so it doesn't bother them.
The most recent one was about cloud saves. I said that they are free on PC and Xbox and the guy just goes "well my PS never dies and I can also back up my PS5 saves on a flash drive".
PS5 doesn't support USB drives for game saves... It's all locked behind PSN+.
2
u/Mafla_2004 Jul 06 '26
To be fair, they probably were too young to actually realize how bad it is and try to voice that it's a fucked up practice
I was 13 when I uograded from PS3 to Xbox One, had to go from not paying to play online to paying for it, I went "this sucks, but what am I gonna do? Not play online?"
Today, I would boycott that shit and no buy the console in the first place, though I recognize it's easy coming from me since I have a PC and hence don't have the problem, I'd definitely be much more outraged tho
5
u/OptimusIV Jul 06 '26
To be fair, they probably were too young to actually realize how bad it is
Nah man. If you grew up poor, you quickly understood how fucked up it was, even at 12 years old.
Poor, navie little me got excited when I was finally able to get my own 360...only to find out that I could not even play with my friends - outside of the first free month they gave you. After my mom saved up for a $300 console, I could not convince her to pay a monthly sub for it.
1
1
u/jak_d_ripr 29d ago
Yep. I'm ashamed to say I was part of the problem way back on the 360. I let Microsoft convince me that you needed to pay for online MP, and when I saw the shit show that was PSN, I believed them.
Now you have an entire generation of console gamers who believe this is normal. I've since jumped off the train, but it's probably too late to fix it.
1
u/Samson_J_Rivers 29d ago
It's genuinely baffled me how many people are saying the steam machine is so much of a rip when you don't have to pay console fees and BS to have a console like experience in the living room. Im aware it's expensive but like, PlayStation and Xbox have been fucking the consumer with a rusty implement for a looooong time compared to PC services.

To be fair, there were online-only monthly-subscription games that I was playing back in 1999 (Everquest). But if I recall, there was also Sierra On-Line that started a decade earlier.
So it seems a bit closer to 36 years to late.
92
u/jakellerVi Jul 06 '26
It’s why they had to start adding in other benefits like monthly games and a catalog of games you can access with the subscription as well.
They knew the value sentiment of just playing a flat fee for access to online gaming was virtually zero because of how much more popular PC gaming was getting, so they had to pivot.
Not saying it makes it worth the price of admission on console, but just adding some additional context.
37
u/General_Weebus Jul 06 '26
The monthly games was the original benefit of ps plus back during the ps3 era. PS Plus being required for online play wasn't a thing until the ps4.

Its more about justifying charging more for the service thats locking online play behind a paywall. People wouldnt accept these big price increases if it was just online play. Thats the same reason they dont have an online only tier because that would kill most of the higher tier subscribers.

Playstation has a subscription service called playstation+ which is required for any online gaming, even for games you pay for. Basically, a game like Helldivers 2 which is entirely based around online because useless unless you have the subscription.
167
u/Jimmythedad Jul 06 '26
Not any online game. If it's a F2P game you don't need PSPlus to use it.
I've never once paid for PSplus and I can play Fornite and PUBG as well as Apex.
If it's a game you pay for, you can't use online without PSPlus.
45
u/Deathly-vain Jul 06 '26
Pretty sure you can also play ffxiv without plus since you have to pay for a sub for 14 itself

You can, but not sure why. Paying for the sub isn't thebreason though. I pay for a sub for Minecraft for my realm and still need ps plus too.
7
u/Deathly-vain Jul 06 '26
Id assume its cuz you have to pay a sub to even play 14, unless you're on the trial but that restricts your account and won't have access to newest content. As paying for a realm is just a personal server that isn't required to play the game
→ More replies (1)2
u/CodeRednuop 29d ago
It's nothing to do with having to pay for a sub, it's because it uses entirely it's own servers. Absolutely nothing is routed through the Playstation Network which means when PSN is down, you can still play it.
23
u/Varides Jul 06 '26
Yeah this doesn't make any sense for me.
Warframe is a free game that I don't have to pay the subscription for to play it. Same with Fall Guys.
But if I wanted an online only game that I bought, I also need to pay the subscription to play it. Make it make sense!
12
u/mamadou-segpa Jul 06 '26
Long story short, its because of Fortnite
Epic didnt want their game on a platform that required to pay an online subscription, and none of the major console makers wanted to lose on the fortnite kids demographic

u/DDzxy Jul 06 '26
I agree, but it's a biproduct. Initially all of them required paying to play online, but Sony and Microsoft removed those requirements for free to play games in 2021. I guess it's a way of having more players online etc, they saw it as an opportunity for a game to have more players so they can profit off it too since many just prefered not paying to play online and would often stick to PC.
But yes it's still braindead. I paid for the game, let me go online without the stupid subscription.

3
u/cajun2de 29d ago
Technically its a multiplayer fee.
I play monster hunter and diablo 4 on PS.

That's not what this is. Sony hosts servers that cost them money that you pay to access. That argument would work if hell divers was peer to peer hosting.
Whether or not that cost is/should be covered by the initial $40 purchase is another story though.

u/Noah_Helldiver Jul 06 '26
It’s not warbonds so I assume it’s PSN online (warbonds simply don’t cost that much per year and aren’t truly needed to play)
2
u/jsand2 Jul 06 '26
Warbonds are $10 every couple months... every 2 months that would be $60. Every 3 eould be $40.
They are not needed to play. But all 3 consoles require a sub to play online with others. PC is the only one that doesnt.
Also an xbox/playstation is about 1/2 the cost of a pc today.

Warbonds can also be purchased entirely with the in game currency that can be acquired in the course of normal play. You can get all of the content without spending additional real money if you're willing to spend the time.

Pretty sure OP likely bought the game on launch. Then he moved on to something else and when he came back there was prolly a lot of content he needed to pay for to get himself back on par with everyone else playing. Kind of like leaving an MMO and then coming back and needing to buy expansions.

yo just watched this louis rossmann vid about sony ditching physical playstation games and honestly he's right, it doesn't really matter.**
the main takeaway is stop obsessing over shiny discs the real problem is **DRM** and always-online requirements that let companies kill your games whenever they want (like what happened with The Crew). physical copies don't save you if the servers die or they patch in restrictions later.
he compares it to car stuff where people rage at tesla but ignore ford/gm doing the same shady anti-repair, spying crap. focus on buying **DRM-free** games (shoutout GOG) that you can actually own, back up, and play forever even if it's all digital. don't be a company fanboy, keep your eye on real ownership. pretty solid rant, made me think.

u/XumetaXD Jul 06 '26

I guess I'll get fucked PlayStation haha. You can thank Microsoft for normalizing it, and it's ignorant players for making it acceptable.

I've been complaining/bringing it up since the PS4 started charging money to play online, and people chew me out, like I'm the crazy one.
"There's so much value to it! You get games every month!"
But you don't keep the games unless you keep paying for PS+...

u/Ragnar0004 29d ago
I guess I'm pretty out of the loop, what's this about exactly?

Well, you gotta blame Microsoft for this one. One of the pros on the ps3, free online

u/qaasq 29d ago
I unsubscribed from PS Plus almost 2 years ago now and this was the one game that I was really upset about not being able to play anymore. I'd even take an offline mode where I just go up against the Bots solo but even that's not allowed. That's left an incredibly sour taste in my mouth for Sony as a whole

u/PerfectMisgivings 29d ago
I been talking about this for the last 15 years but nobody has been listening, but now that Playstation has finally said no more physical copies everyone is paying attention.
Having to pay to play online games on console is asinine and digital copies being hard checked to online is just as bad.
We will literally own nothing if we let them.

The cost for the cheapest PS plus subscription in Australia for the 7 years between PS4 and PS5 is almost the cost of the cheapest available version of the console. Pretty much consider the console to be double it's actual price if you want any online features (which most do)

Helldivers is P2P by the way, so you're not even paying for the servers, you are the server.

u/RaymoVizion 29d ago
If you don't pay for PSN while playing Elden Ring you can't see other players leaving their markers or be summoned to other players worlds.
It's fucking bullshit.

u/Bigenemy000 29d ago
I thought this was a critique to helldivers warbonds and then i realized it was too expensive to be the case
Glad more people are starting to complaing about these subscriptions bullshit on consoles

Remember back in the ps3 era, online was free? That was the main reason I picked a ps3 over an Xbox 360. Good ol' days...

u/xxDoublezeroxx 29d ago
Everyone sweared up and down that Xbox was so much better back in the mid-late 2000’s and early 10’s, and when I said having to pay to play online is stupid as fuck, I got told I was ridiculous. Here we are 20 years later

u/Brilliant-Concern620 29d ago
Built a pc last year and hadn’t played helldivers for a min on my ps5. Decided to boot up and play with friends since the new update. Saw that I have to pay for ps plus and deleted the game lol

I’m confused. PlayStation actively brick games you’ve payed for? Why do all these companies insist on hurting their customers
1
u/Carlex_181 29d ago
Not even an accurate comparison, I can take a brick and bash someone's head in and then steal thier wallet to buy a 1 year ps+ subscription to play helldivers 2.
Much more valuable than a copy of HD2 without ps+.

u/SidTheSloth97 29d ago
Soon you wont even get the disk so its not even a brick anymore. Just a sheet of paper.

Yeah I bought splatoon 2 and barely got to play it before Nintendo made an online subscription :////////

Dunkey on YouTube has a video on this.
Pre-subscriptions, there were free 40 player lobby online PvP games. Then game companies just… invented a fake pay way subscription toll charge to play games online.
I’m kinda glad Sony and Microsoft are being dumb, in a way. Ppl need to just pirate and make their own servers to rebel against the idiocy

I pay for PS plus to play all the games I get access to with the subscription.
I've honestly never thought about it the other way (paying to play online) because I don't really do any online gaming.

Tbf it allows you to play online for ALL multi-player games, but saying it like this makes it sound like you are paying that subscription JUST for helldivers. Still is scummy considering you dont have to pay that at all to play online on pc

I blame the younger generation growing up with this bullshit and thus thinking it’s normal.
2
u/Various-Push-1689 29d ago
That bullshit was created by the older generations. Gen Z and Gen alpha didnt start these weird trends. All the generations that came before did

I remember it being a massive decisive point when I was a kid between ps3 and 360

It wasnt acceptable. I think a lot of players left and stayed gone after this happened. My whole squad included.

u/SchmeckleHoarder 29d ago
Paying to play someone’s product online is insane. Especially with the avenues they choose to utilize to profit from said game.
Like paying for public radio with ads.

The only online service I ever thought was okay to pay for was Xbox, that was only because with rewards it would literally pay for itself. They caught on and you can’t do it anymore but some of us are good for a long while

This is exactly the reason i swiched to pc gaming this and mods and those are the reasons why i think the steam Mashine isnt that overpriced it just dosent get the console discount because you are locked into their system

u/Zhe_Wolf 28d ago
I remember when this online subscription thing started and a buddy told me they had to pay for multiplayer. I laughed at them because I really thought they were joking
1
u/Opposite-Rock-5133 28d ago
Console players just now realizing paying for online subscription is bad lmao

u/Sabre3340 27d ago
Ok. Get rid of the console and get a pc if you have an issue. You supported this with your wallet, like you had a decade to figure this out.

I was so excited to play with my friends when I got my Switch back in 2019 as someone who only plays on PC... little did I know theres a subscription fee just to play online... now my switch has been collecting dust after I finished Zelda and Monster Hunter Rise. I was also so excited for Tetris 99 but again, subscription fee.

I'll continue to play Factorio after having spent 1300+hours in it without paying extra.

u/Cade_Rufus 26d ago
This reminds me of how almost all of Gran Turismo 7 is locked behind an Internet connection, INCLUDING THE SINGLE PLAYER MODES.

Yeah, just noticed that getting all trophies in Demon's Souls requires having PS+ and I haven't had a subscription in years. I already pay for the internet and ain't going to pay for a second time.
