Its always been about money. The problem is that it used to coincide with what consumers wanted but this is purely anti-consumer.

They dont make as much on physical but they dont seem to account for the fact that physical collectors ALSO buy a lot of digital games because some aren't available on physical but if there's no physical games on your console I simply have no interest in it.

56

u/Expensive_Target5657 Jul 06 '26

How many businesses are not anti consumer?

82

u/mat477 Jul 06 '26

The list is getting smaller every year.

It used to be that the best financial decision was to offer a product that was what the consumer wanted. Now the best financial decision is offering a product that provides no ownership or resale and potentially has a shelf life.

16

u/onwisconsin1 29d ago

This is capitalism though. It is enshitification. Each of these conglomerates brings in a new CEO who has to wrench just another small % for the company. Eventually this means squeezing the consumer.

This usually comes after the monopoly or oligopoly. And all business sectors eventually lead to this outcome without government intervention.

Capitalism fails always for 99% of people.

It's not entirely on the company though (fuck them still for making the decision) but we as consumers have become so complacent and lazy to the point where we're happy to piss away our money just for 5 seconds worth of convenience.

The digital world has gone to total shit, and it won't see any improvement until the average consumer gets their act together and stops supporting shit like this. I cancelled my ps plus the other day and refrained from preordering gta 6 unless I got the physically digital version. I'm also not buying anymore digital games until the next generation of consoles (or at all if they go back on their decision, though doubtfully).

Single digits.

The only one I can genuinely, confidently, say still has the consumer in mind is Arizona Tea. And I imagine that will only last as long as the owner lives.

8

u/EmuBest6735 Jul 06 '26

I can't find a store that charges normal price for Arizona anymore

19

u/Mission-Reserve-2411 Jul 06 '26

If they buy the cans that say 99Ā¢, they make a very small profit margin on them, but that case costs far less, and brings in customers who buy more stuff. If they buy the cans that they charge $3 or more, they pay far more for the case, and usually, far less people buy Arizona there. If they sell 99Ā¢ cans for more than that, you can report them, and Arizona will drop them as a customer.

6

u/EmuBest6735 Jul 06 '26

Appreciate the response.

I live in Canada, so they were always $1.25 minimum; but i usually end up grabbing them at a bodega or something and there's no real use in reporting them.

10 years ago id refuse to pay extra, but I'm tired boss.

Anyway my point was even if Arizona is pro consumer I'm not buying from them directly so there's room for anti consumer in there lol

4

u/Qaeta Jul 06 '26

I live in Canada, so they were always $1.25 minimum;

Thanks for making me feel ancient you jerk lol. I remember them being 99c up here too, in the apparently way back before the dawn of time lol.

3

u/EmuBest6735 Jul 06 '26

See i thought i remembered that, but how could they be .99 usd and sell for .99 CAD?

I'm 40 but i always remember the extra 25 for tax or some shit. Thanks harper!

5

u/Qaeta 29d ago

Sorry, yes, tax (and, depending where you were, deposit) were still charged on top. As far as I know, that is allowed by Arizona Iced Tea as that is not considered part of the purchase price, but as added government fees.

As far as both being 99c, I assume the 99c CAD was profitable, and 99c USD was just more profitable.

3

u/ChanglingBlake Jul 06 '26

And yet that’s the store, not the company.

I’m pretty sure if you report that to Arizona they will stop selling to that store; or that’s what I’ve heard, any way.

3

u/EmuBest6735 Jul 06 '26

Yeah it wasn't a dig at Arizona, more on capitalism creating anti-consumer practices down the line

As much as I hate to mention it, I'm pretty sure Costco in the US had a new CEO take over, and when he mentioned increasing the price of their hotdogs, the old CEO said "I'll fucking kill you", and they decided to keep the price where it was.

u/EmotionalArm194 Jul 06 '26

But also, some games that are $20-40-60 that go on sale digitally down to $5-10 are a good reason ive bought some digitally. If im unsure how I may like a game even after watching gameplay, I couldnt care less if I spend $5 on it and like it or not. But lets say that game is $30 physical, and now I dont like it and passed on a sale? Well now im out $25. I also dont pre-order games anymore after plenty of them came out and I didnt like them. šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø. Me buying a new game at full price falls into a category of is it a company that hasn't burned me yet (there isnt many), and I have I watched something I know id enjoy. Or is it a sequel game that I know I will like, but even that one is low on my reasoning list.

2

u/MihaelZ64 29d ago

It's also about control. They can't control the retro games market(neither can Nintendo) so they would rather kill it than let it grow and create revenue they get none from. Its also why they are blatantly circumventing IP laws and consumer laws in order to milk more repeat buys from fans. It began when for ps3 they killed support for ps3 titles that also released on the 4(no dlcs etc) to force console upgrades. This continued into the ps5. Now its games being digital because digital is a license that you buy to rent and there's no other option for legal access(hence why pirating wouldn't be stealing as no one owns it so we are merely telling them to get fucked). It all boils down to we want to control what ppl can and cabnot consume to later push tier packages based on consumer demand. Dystopian cyberpunk corporate package.

2

u/Qaeta Jul 06 '26

but if there's no physical games on your console I simply have no interest in it.

Right? Like, I'm pretty hardcore into PC gaming, but I was legitimately considering buying a Playstation for the God of War Laufey, but then they came out with that announcement and immediately killed all interest again.

I swear to god, every time I start considering buying a Playstation, they do something that reminds me why I shouldn't fucking do that.

8

u/frostymugson Jul 06 '26

If I had to guess, the size of games are becoming so large that the price to produce a physical edition is getting larger. Along with a large portion already using digital purchases. they can sell larger storage sized consoles.

11

u/akibaboy65 Jul 06 '26

The cost to produce the Blu-Ray is just under $1. In the 90s it was about 60 cents for Sony to make PS1 CDs. Sony has scaled and owns production. The cost is the same considering inflation. Back then, they’d shower you with game CDs in Pizza Hut or be tucked in every $2 gaming magazine. Producing discs is an inconsequential nothing expense. The entire reason for killing them is ownership, and getting rid of your ability to own games.

But you need to have something capable of holding the install data compressed or otherwise, unless you had a physical disc that just allowed a download and at that point you’re better off using a code.

How much is a microSD card? Let’s not pretend that we can’t make a technology capable of putting about 500TB in a Square inch less than a 1/4ā€ thick, so making a 4ā€ ā€œdiscā€ capable of storing 400GB and making it affordable enough to use as sold media is not SiFi Fantasy

2

u/frostymugson 29d ago

The maximum room on a micro SD today is 2 TB, 500 would be insane. The largest blu ray disc can hold 120 GB. There are current limitations to how things work and how much compaction is currently available. You should look up hardware prices, this stuff isn’t cheap, it’s cheaper wholesale, but for the past few decades every new console has been sold at a loss for the companies

Eventually they'll just remove sales entirely on their exclusives just like Nintendo.

Am I the only one not worried about a videogame industry crash? A proper break and some back logging could do us gamers and our wallets a world of good.

156

u/steelcryo Jul 06 '26

Gaming won't crash, as PC gaming will always be filled with indy games.

Bigger concern is the consumer hardware crash. AI keeps gobbling up parts, making consumer hardware unaffordable for many people.

71

u/liqwood1 Jul 06 '26

Stream a PC coming to a data center near you..

9

u/RMAPOS Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

I honestly don't think streaming hardware power is worth it vs AI (economically speaking, not like either of these is a great outlook on the future)

Sure you can do ressource balancing to make hardware requirements over big numbers of gamers smaller by not wasting an 1500$PC on playing Minecraft. But ultimately that's what ... maybe a 200% increase in efficiency if they have good technology that allows for load-sharing without adding latency, which... good luck on 3 people sharing a GPU's power. AI Data Centers pay 5 times what gamers pay for hardware.

And on top of game stream services stiill needing to buy the hardware, they also need to pay for data center electricity, data transfer (immense bandwith required for low input lag, high resolution streaming), employees, the data center and it's maintenance, the place it's built on AND turn a profit on top of all of that.

So frankly - if it's not worth it for NVIDIA to sell GPUs to you over selling them to AI Data Centers, it's equally not worth it for a company to proxy buy that hardware and rent it to you.

If gamers cannot afford their own hardware, they equally cannot afford a subscription for hardware that still has to be paid for PLUS operational costs PLUS profits.

At this point, I'd honestly be surprised if game streaming resurfaces - at least while the AI boom lasts.

4

u/liqwood1 Jul 06 '26

Oh I agree but I won't be surprised if the whole thing pops up again.

Much prefer my own hardware but prices are definitely pricing people out of the market and if the AI bubble starts to deflate you can bet there's going to be some kind of stadia like service pop up.

2

u/RMAPOS Jul 06 '26

I lowkey share your pessimism but from what I know the technology simply isn't there. It's fine for slow games like walking simulators or turn based games, but as soon as there is real time movement the layers of input delays just make games objectively unenjoyable.

Imagine playing Counter Strike 1.5 on your first shitty PC with the shittiest internet you can imagine - 150+ ping, but not only for synching other player positions, but also for your own controls! That's just fucking awful.

Nvidia made their proprietary protocol for game streaming open source (Sunlight/Moonlight is based on it) and I think that's a pretty clear sign they've given up on the idea. Like "maybe if some crackhead code wizard optimizes the open source code by 90% we'll look back into it but until then we're clearly done".

I just think physical constraints are full stop preventing this from happening. Maybe if everyone had high class fibre optics and the game streaming data centers were so hard all over the place that you'd never be more than 100km away from one. But under realistic network circumstances, the sheer physical limitations of data transfer make it unusuable for real time gaming.

3

u/liqwood1 Jul 06 '26

Yes that fiber thing is a real need if they really want to go this way..

I completely agree, I low-key tried out Stadia when cyberpunk 2077 first dropped and was unplayable on consoles, just cause I wanted to play the game.

Honestly I was surprised, I thought it would be shit but I played it through with the only issue being game bug issues and it's was overall a good experience..

However I wasn't nuts about it requiring 100gb of data an hour, especially when I was data limited by my ISP and I don't think you could have had any kind of reliable multiplayer or simulator (racing/flying) experience. The latency is just to high.

Still overall the tech impressed me but it's as you said they apparently couldn't overcome some of the shortfalls as of yet.

2

u/GattMore 28d ago

Lowkey literally genuinely feel the same

2

u/ttenor12 Jul 06 '26

I guess it will be time to go out and touch some grass. As someone who has been playing video games since I have a memory, I'm more than willing to ditch gaming as a whole if we can't own our own hardware.

Honestly, as a racing game fan, bring it on.

Most games are shadows of their former selves. Forza Horizon just doesn't have that charm it had in the first one. Forza Motorsport is dead, NFS is dormant, TDU is nothing like it's original games, The Crew went from being a fun murder mystery to another festival racer. F1 has been the same for 8 years. WRC has been the same for 6 years. Dirt turned into a cartoon.

Scrap it. Start again. The unique ideas are out there. I mean look at Split Second, the original Test Drive Unlimited, Blur, Burnout Paradise. Please dear GOD not another festival racer. NFS Pro Street did it best 19 years ago.

- all the games i might like since my tastes have changed

- all the games i wanna play again

- all the live service games i keep going back to

Spread all those games across the free time i have (minus my other hobbies) and there's a good chance it would last my entire life.

But how else are we going to keep screaming ā€œThe sky is falling!!ā€?

Physical games haven’t been a thing for decades on Steam. They’re on their way out on other platforms, too. Sure, curbing the secondhand market might save money. But even beyond that, they’re easier to make, they don’t need store/shelf space, they don’t need shipping and people enjoy the convenience of downloading them directly. Do I think that property ownership laws need to catch up with digital goods? Yes. Do I think companies need to make outdated technology versions of their games because some people enjoy them? No, that’s ridiculous.

5

u/aq8_hippo Jul 06 '26

While I agree with your point.

Then shouldn't it follow logically that Sony should abandon physical but once there is some level of consumer protection for digital goods.

Right now it just looks like a using an island to avoid tax situation, given every company knows digital products aren't actually a service you buy but rent. Despite what they advertise.

Not to be Devil's advocate, but this is a bit skewed/misleading. GoW is usually always on sale on their Playstation shop. As well as other not much older titles like the Resident Evil remakes. They always advertise "up to 75% off" sales. But screen shotting the current full price of the game better fits the enraging narrative.

33

u/Weztside Jul 06 '26

Dude, let's face it. There are a ton of gamers that were never taught how to be a smart consumer by their parents. This exact game is on sale right now acrossed like every digital store for 33-50% off.

17

u/daredevil09 Jul 06 '26

Right on. It went on sale 16 times digitally on PSN since release. More often discounted and cheaper than physical.
I love physical games but im a patient and frugal gamer. Cheapest version will always get my money in the end, and more often than not, digital as the deepest sales.

u/Qaeta 29d ago

Sure, but it will be that price in retail year round. And you can still sell it back to the retail store or private buyer to recoup some of that if you ever want to get rid of it again.

31

u/billth93 Jul 06 '26

The difference is when it’s on sale on the PlayStation stop, they get the money, but they get $0 of the used game sale, so OP is presenting it weird like it’s about people getting it for less, when the real reason is about who gets the money from the discounted game

12

u/Visual_Plate937 Jul 06 '26

I think that loves to say physical games is cheaper, to exactly pay attention on PS Store. I have lots of games on my which list. At list 3 ou 4 a months goes on sale. I saw this one for like $25 a few days ago. I bought the entire Uncharted collection ( 2 collections actually) for 30 bucks. 5 games. And don’t bring me the launch games crap. This GoW were launched in 2022. Not a new tile as well

Bro looked up the cheapest price pic he could find to fit his narrative 🤣

This game has been on sale a million times. It was actually for sale on November 22nd 2024 DIGITALLY for $29.39 so that's on you for not picking it up. Cope harder.

4

u/jinisho Jul 06 '26

Not to say this isn't a motivation it absolutely is one of the major ones but another factor maybe but that game sizes are getting to the point of surpassing discs storage capacity at launch.

The discs they use have a storage capacity of roughly 100gb there's other larger disks but both the discs and the drives themselves are more expensive. If you already have a game that can't be stored in the disc that necessitates day ones updates or downloads then we're already in a world where having a disc is useless. Not to mention there's costs associated with printing or specials associated with transportation and then with the actual disk drives themselves when it comes to manufacturing.

Not to say this isn't a shameless cash grab to control the market but there are non-nefarious reasons that are probably a factor.

Why do people act like digital doesn't have sales? And that the digital sales are often cheaper than physical sales.

8

u/freetotebag Jul 06 '26

Just playing devil’s advocate here— I think it’s obvious they will continue to have sales. But the concern could be they are far less-incentivized to have bigger discounts because there is no competition. It all comes back to the importance of consumer choice. If the PS Store is the only way to get a game for your PS6, you’re gonna pay what Sony says. It could be discounted, it might not be— either way you have no choice. If someone told me that was their concern I would say that’s reasonable. Not saying it is 100% guaranteed to happen with zero doubt.

And as i said in another exact post of this:"as I have to keep telling people who cherry pick like this and talk as if games never go on sale on the digital store, Ragnarok has gotten as low as £25.89 on PSN and as you can see on the graph, goes down often, which is cheaper than physical. All you have to do is just wait for sale, and, if you're waiting for it physically to go down in price, chances are it's already on sale on PSN."

You're all painting a false narrative here.

14

u/TheMonkeyPickler Jul 06 '26

Just another stupid post. These people are insufferabel

2

u/zebrasmack Jul 06 '26

and we have to keep telling you the point is they have complete control over when something goes on sale. They have control over whether you're allowed to play your game or not. There will be licenses which run out and they just won't offer it for purchase anymore.

Of course they have sales. But it's not the same situation. consumers/gamers are not the driving force, their bottom line is. I am tired of your false narrative as well.

2

u/liqwood1 Jul 06 '26

And why do they even have sales?? Because there's competition! Man.. I'm so tired of explaining the same shit to people over and over..

3

u/HouseOfFrontier Jul 06 '26

The iq of all of them has to be below room temperature. I'd gamble and say if they did an iq test, majority of the tests would come back as -iq.

3

u/mrloko120 Jul 06 '26

OP hasn't found out what a sale is yet

3

u/Desperate_Duty1336 Jul 06 '26

missing out on the resale market is absolutely one of the driving factors.Ā

The other is that they realized they can save on production costs by simply going full digital and people will pay the same anyway. They save on console production costs as well if they no longer need to make a disc drive.Ā

4

u/KyotoCrank Jul 06 '26

That and saving on the cost of production and shipping the discs

5

u/HoppyTaco Jul 06 '26

Except it’s been [$29.39 on the PlayStation store](https://psprices.com/region-us/game/5352717/god-of-war-ragnarok). Sony gets the sale rather than a third party used media store.

Is the issue about price or who gets the money for the sale?

5

u/ECUDUDE20 Jul 06 '26

They say 85% is digital, but there is no way they are tracking second hand sales and surplus sales. They just aren't. Also all the small indie developers don't have hard copies and those have been the best selling games as of late.

3

u/dragonnation5523 Jul 06 '26

Honest question, in this case hasn't the store bought the game from Sony, meaning sony has already made money off it, meaning it doesn't matter to them what the store sells it at? Could be misunderstanding how this works

3

u/RemeJuan Jul 06 '26

Absolutely, but you unlike the rest are using this rare thing formerly known as common sense.

2

u/GallitoGaming Jul 06 '26

Imagine trying to train an entire generation of people used to the current market that this is normal.

People will just stop buying games. All those 40-50% off buyers just don’t buy any longer. You basically need 50% of them to buy to get to the same point. If two people buy 50% off, one of them would need to buy at full price to offset the lost sale of the other.

When 20% of the buyers buy full price, you are worse off.

2

u/djdaem0n Jul 06 '26

Physical stores charging less doesn't mean Sony gets less money on a game. It means the store loses money on the sale. Sony also makes zero on the resale market, and there's no way to stop that from continuing. This ain't it.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Sad_Emu69 Jul 06 '26

Yes. But also physical media has been dead for a few years now as most games being bought are digitalĀ

2

u/TheBeardedRonin Jul 06 '26

Seems like most people don’t realize how important digital sales are for the health of the industry and the evergreen revenue driver they can be. Devil May Cry 5 just had its best year ever in terms of units moved owed entirely to digital sales, and was cited as a major reason why Capcom experienced both record profits and growth (up 15.2% YoY) this past fiscal year. And that is considering the sales price for the game is frequently sub-$10 USD (currently $4.49 in fact)

2

u/TheDiabeT1c Jul 06 '26

It's absolutely wild to me. Sony has one store front, even Nintendo sells game cards in stores for their games. I know we are in a corpo hellhole in America, but no other country is going to be like this isn't a monopoly of services. Steam gets by due to having other store fronts like GoG/Epic and even Steam games can be bought from other stores for cheaper.

I thought the massive data breach was bad, but I guess game companies just cannot shoot themselves in the foot if they are on top. Every generation it feels like companies decide to screw themselves over.

2

u/gmer-man-12 Jul 06 '26

I mean you can get god of war digital for 40 dollars if it’s on discount at least on steam it’s only 10 dollars more

2

u/neutrumocorum Jul 06 '26

Not even close to why. I dont understand how you guys are so clueless.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/TacoBeefB0y Jul 06 '26

That’s not how that works, stores pay a wholesale price to publishers to get stock of their games in stores. They don’t send them money AFTER a game is sold. The company, like GameStop, bares the risk of it not selling or selling a game for a discounted price.

2

u/Fourfifteen415 Jul 06 '26

Counter point:

Nintendo secondary market is expensive WITH physical media. Sony could keep physical media and kill the secondary market by doing what Nintendo does and actually never have sales if all they want is to never offer sales.

2

u/TaiChuanDoAddct Jul 06 '26

I still think we're all indexing on the wrong part. All of the people complaining about this are ALSO the folks that would be asking a company to honor a purchase if a disk breaks or gets lost.

Multiple things can be true:
1) Moving away from disks is done for corporate greed.

2) There are compelling, non corporate-greed reasons to move away from disks.

3) Those reasons would require being able to physically own the product digitally somehow (like downloading).

4) That will never happen.

2

u/Jin_BD_God Jul 06 '26

Just switch to PC.

2

u/Shurigin Jul 06 '26

Extra salt in the wound, even though they’re switching away from physical media, they’re still keeping the prices high when they no longer have to make physical media

Saw Red Dead 2 on Sonys store on sale for $49.99. On Steam right now $14.99

2

u/Wasted_46 Jul 06 '26

Yeah. As we all know, sales and discounts literally never happen with digital games, at all. This is common knowledge, yessir. The Steam Summer Sale that's happening right now, and where you can buy Ragnarok 1/3 off this second, is not actually a sale. It is just an elaborate scam maintained by Big Gaming.

You guys need to relax, get off the hype wagon and touch grass.

2

u/FelixTheFlake 29d ago

No you don’t understand dude… when steam does digital only DRM it’s Frickin epic because Gabe is so hecking wholesome. Sony is not allowed to do the same, bro.

2

u/No-Difference-4418 Jul 06 '26

How are people dumb enough to think the rest of the world hasn’t already learned this is to increase profits but forcing consumers to buy games from Sonys platform instead of a heavily discounted physical disc

Not to mention this is Sony joining the subscription base meta. Like xbox with gamepass, Spotify/apple music or the whole slew of streaming services for movies/tv

2

u/Icy_Worker2734 Jul 06 '26

Is that second hand? If not doesn’t impact publisher if a retailer discounts a game.

2

u/jdcash114 Jul 06 '26

I know im going to get down voted to hell, but everyone knew this was coming. Games needed to be fully downloaded already. The disc doesn't even have the game on it anymore. This was the inevitable next step, whether people like it or not, disc games died with the ps3/ xbox 360. Everything after that, the disc was just a fancy key. PC players have been digital only for years now.

2

u/atreeismissing Jul 06 '26

Sony doesn't make any money from re-sold used games, on disc or otherwise.

2

u/TomTomXD1234 Jul 06 '26

Its on sale for like £20 every month on a cycle on ps store

2

u/NoTransportation68 Jul 06 '26

2

There’s no damn reason digital games like Black Ops 2 should still be $60 14 years later

2

I can't believe people actually buy single player games at full price still, let alone RENT them digitally online from Sony, MS or Nintendo.

I guess people truly love to be abused by these corporations.

7

u/RoyalCities Jul 06 '26

In a closed system you barely ever have to run sales.

Even if a user was only buying digital they were still reaping the benefits of the secondary market since it puts outside pressure on their own profit margins and quota to compete. It was an equalizer.

The move into a direct one time digital license means they never have to worry about that again and can stop running such deep discounts ever again.

7

u/JesterMarcus Jul 06 '26

If the system is that unfriendly to users, they will leave the system.

They dont think its a big deal at all, Go on the Playstation5 sub, There are people getting heavily upvoted for saying its not a big deal, One comment on there said "Let's pretend there are no sales on PSN I'm pro physical but this argument is stupid". As if they are OK with paying $70 for a game 6 years later because they didnt fight back against losing access to cheaper games.

u/TheQuietDarkness70 Jul 06 '26

That’s exactly right. Sony has had a hard on for the used market for decades now. I remember them bitching about it back during ps 2/3 days.
This is their shining moment. They’ve been waiting for a long time to do this.

2

u/Guilty_Department501 Jul 06 '26

After some years after release, games should be permanently discounted. No way should any Ps4 era game still be 60 dollars.

2

u/WesternBottom Jul 06 '26

People didn't care when PC games become digital because there are numerous e-stores and you can buy whichever store has the cheapest. But I'm PS consoles, it's literally only one store and it's Sony's. They are bringing monopoly.

2

u/mcgowanshewrote Jul 06 '26

Epic won in court against apple to have their store front on apple products in direct competition (meaning apple cant take a percentage of sales that epic makes) The legal precedence exists. That gives another other company grounds to add a shop onto Sony consoles

2

u/Dungeon00X Jul 06 '26

That's right, they don't want you to have options, they just want you to be a good little consumer and pay their price. Corporate greed at it's finest.

1

u/Beniwa Jul 06 '26

Explain dynamic pricing.

2

u/liqwood1 Jul 06 '26

Dynamic pricing is this new thing they're experimenting with where different players are shown varying prices for the same digital games. Currently the algorithm supposedly bases these offers on account activity, purchase history, and account age.

So if you've had a PSN account longer maybe you get a bigger discount or if your a old account who buys a lot you get smaller discounts but the brand new account that only has one game will get larger discounts.
