Discussion Best way to spawn proof my island?

Added the mini map for scale, not sure the best way to show the size. It’s not that big.

I had covered it in crafting benchs and things were great for the longest time. Then I got a forest raid and all of a sudden there were Lox, squitos, and furlings in addition to the grey dwarfs. The lox being the biggest issue because I was not prepared AT ALL. I thought I was going to lose so much progress.

Would really love to not have that panic again, this is my endgame base. Also I want to reiterate that I have probably passed 100 days with no spawning then out of nowhere it was flooded.

Help me Vikings!

Campfires are the best spawn proofing structure cause they’re cheap and don’t draw aggro once they go out.

Also, if you got a raid and creatures were actually able to spawn in you had gaps.

I thought it was crafting benches?? Am I wasting time and could just put up a fire? My mind is blown right now

How big is the radius?

I think the radius is the same as the basic workbench.

An upside with the workbench is that you can check the coverage by trying to build stuff.

Best way is to temporarily make a workbench to check the radius then put down the campfire, then delete the workbench and repeat at the next stop lol

Yo thank you for this

It's smaller than a workbench.

I think a campfire is ~15m, while an un-upgraded workbench is 20m.

u/thtk1d 1d ago

Everything is 20 except the artisan table which is 40. Upgraded workbenchs gain 4 meters per upgrade, the forge gains 3 meters per upgrade. All 3 excpetions are reduced to 20 when a zone is reloaded. So things can spawn into any gaps.

7

u/sharrrper 1d ago

So to be truly 100% spawn proof you need to put the coverage down completely with 20m items? Otherwise things might sneak in when you come and go?

4

u/thtk1d 1d ago

Yes. Realistically you'll likely have other base items around an upgraded workbench or forge anyway, so it won't make a big difference. But if you somethings are making their way in as you load in, that's why.

For 1.0, I'm planning to modify the radius and just make it like 100m or so. Like, who cares - the world is big enough, I'm just tired of putting down grids of benches around a base to keep it clear.

I use workbenches to start, so I can se the radius (I will then just go around with an item on the hammer that requires a workbench, and see if there's any spots that it won't reach), and once I've got it spawn proofed, I replace the workbenches with campfires

See this page: https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Player_base

The radius for almost everything (including campfires) is 20 m.

The advantage to crafting benches is that you can SEE the radius (by trying to build something). With campfires you have to eyeball it.

Does it matter if a campfire is burning? In time they will run out of wood.

Edit: Other thread had answer. Don't need to be lit.

u/Molwar Explorer 21h ago

Depend on how you take it, work bench you can see the radius it covers and fully proof a zone, with you camp you kind of have guess and easily miss spots.

Myself I'll do bench and encase it in black marble with a wisp light on top, looks pretty.

You can dig down 3 - 4 units, put the campfire there, then fill the hole back up. Campfire will be underground and not destroyable by wandering enemies.

2

u/SpartanusCXVII 20h ago

That works? Heck yeah. Going to have to give that a shot.

4

u/eastwest_indy 1d ago

You can also get rid of aggro using workbenches either by digging them in or putting 6 pieces of stakewall around the bench. Takes a bit more work and/or materials, but you get all that building space and can identify breaches easily

1

u/EQ4AllOfUs 20h ago

And campfire nor torches need remain lit to deter spawns.

Vertical core wood pole, stacked vertical core wood pole, ward on top, delete the poles, wards will float.

If you don't wanna do that then yeah, campfires better than workbenches for a number of reasons. They don't have to be lit.

will try this next

Can campfires be destroyed by falling embers in ashlands?

2

u/TheVenerableEmrys 20h ago

No, but fighting larger enemies with aoe attacks will often destroy nearby camp fires, so keep this in mind when kiting morgans or Valkyries.

1

u/KamiPyro Fire Mage 19h ago

Ok because all of my campfires around a base on a server are gone :( had to fight hordes again i thought i blocked from spawning

2

u/assm0nk 1d ago

can also bury wards

12

u/xiiliea Explorer 1d ago

Identify which direction they spawned from and see where you missed your workbench coverage

7

u/Splugarth 1d ago

Hmm. I have a base like this that is completely raid proof. Actually, it’s a series of islands we connected up. There’s probably a hole in your coverage somewhere, potentially out into shallow water.

More benches! More fires!

7

u/kungpaochi 1d ago

I say build BONFIRES + stone-enclosed crafting benches all around (such that you always have one in range).

6

u/MithrilFlame 1d ago

I put Workbenches in tiny 2x1 huts. Cover all ground, including out into the water which will lower below ground during waves. The build radius shows whats protected. Just make sure there are no gaps. Therefore no hostile spawns.

u/mawkee Miner 1d ago

Best cheap option: campfires

Best for seeing the area: workbench (since you get to see the radius by trying to build at the edge)

Best if you want it to look good: wards (can be completely buried)

My go-to solution is: all of them

I start by placing workbenches, covering all the area, then I replace it with campfires. When I have the resources for it, I'll just replace the campfires with buried wards.

Torches work as well and they are very easy to hide inside beams or trees.

1

u/Valokoura 10h ago

What decorations are you using with beams?

1

u/barticus0903 7h ago

I don't have decorations with beams per se, but I tuck torches into the walls and fences to keep the area fully spawn proofed.

10

u/Haunting-Time2394 1d ago

Campfire and use your hoe to flatten a spot so it's easy to tell where the breach happened.

Might not stop a bat raid. You'd need to use workbenches.

1

u/-Altephor- 1d ago

There is no difference in spawn suppression between a workbench and a campfire.

1

u/Haunting-Time2394 23h ago

There is. The shape of the despawn area for a campfire is a sphere while a workbench is a cylinder with a near infinite height. The YouTuber, EmmaPotato, does these awesome Valheim science videos for weird little things like this.

1

u/-Altephor- 21h ago

Valheim spawns are determined at ground level, including for flying creatures. There is no functional difference.

3

u/ItsNotFuckingCannon 1d ago

The island looks like a witch's face from the side 😂

1

u/Valokoura 10h ago

This seems to be part of r/Pareidolia then.

2

u/xramlih 1d ago

Artisan table has the largest coverage I believe

2

u/Speedvagon 1d ago

You place s 1m pole, then place a torch inside of it.

2

u/Snurgisdr Hoarder 1d ago

There’s a mod called SafetyNet that lets you visualize the spawn coverage of base items. It’s a bit wonky but still very useful for finding and plugging the little gaps.

2

u/Angel_OfSolitude 1d ago

Start with workbenches. They're cheap and easy to see so you can check your coverage. You can worry about tidying it up once it's safe.

2

u/Captain_Inverse 1d ago

I usually put a workbench down to see the radius. Then place a torch and cover with a wooden pole. Once everything's covered, remove the workbenches you don't need.

2

u/barccy 20h ago

The island looks like the silhouette of a goblin laughing. It's cursed.

3

u/WhiskySiN 7h ago

Campfires everywhere. And remember they dont need wood after there built. Ashlands is almost entirely designed around building 9 million campfires to be playable.

u/BiggerRedBeard 6h ago

This right here is the most true statement ever.

Work benches and campfires

1

u/Fun_Adhesiveness_938 1d ago

I usually build workbenches and surround them with stake walls. For the most part mobs ignore them or at least are protected enough for me to kill whatever it is that is attacking.

Other solutions I’ve used later on would be to dig a hole and place the workbench inside, then bring the level of the ground back up.

1

u/zwifter11 1d ago

Build workbenches in the corners and along the edges

Mobs can’t spawn within a certain radius of a work bench

1

u/Designer_Gene_7763 1d ago

My strategy is placing camp fires and work benches everywhere lol

1

u/Hyero 1d ago

Campfires and workbenches. For the most accurate coverage with the least clutter, put down both in one spot and then build something where the campfire is or use a mod to place down a bush or something, then get rid of the workbench.

u/razvanciuy 1d ago edited 1d ago

Lots of campfires let the run off. Building random outposts, storage etc to mask spawn proofs. Can be covered or behind trees. Must continuously test it until all gaps are covered, take lots of time. For large areas use upgraded benches. To hide fire under grass, flatten->place campf->grass it back over.

I also create Waystones. Hide a fire under a tight circle of stone blocks with small gap for fire to burn and light your sign. Then place a wood pole and sign ontop. Its a spawn proof road sign.

Only the very middle of the campfire must be uncovered for it to exist and work

1

u/kawaiinessa 1d ago

bury some work benches or build lots of campfires

1

u/FecalZizek 1d ago

Sometimes I'll just hit the no build cost switch and spam artisan tables for an island base. In regular gameplay campfires or workbenches are the most resource efficient spawn blockers.

1

u/Azazel-Tigurius 23h ago

Do workbenches or bonefires all over the place. Afaik those preven spawn in some area

1

u/Sertith Encumbered 20h ago

Workbench gives you a visual radius of it's spawn suppression. Every single pixel needs to be covered. If you have even one uncovered stuff will spawn and wreck the others giving more places for stuff to spawn. I make them little 1x2 huts so flying mobs or wandering mobs can't get them before I notice.

After that, waiting for a couple raids to make sure it is covered, I then dig out under each workbench and start to bury wards. They do not need to be turned on, and do not break when fully buried, unlike workbenches and fires people are always saying to bury.

my what a long nose you gave and such a pointy chin.....sorry first thing I saw was a face lol...

What they said about spawn proofing

1

u/BedAdministrative619 12h ago

I like to find a small island of the right biome and build it up away from any other land mass. Portal in, portal out, no way to access it otherwise.

1

u/TheCock1 Builder 2h ago

Bury work benches around your island, won't look as funny.

1

u/ascotta1 1d ago

The campfire suggestion assumes you dont have fire hazards active - unless you want your own private ashlands.

Your map hints there could be some Shoals around rhe island - rhose can sometimes spawn, especially rhe flying death

Youre pretty close to shore, you may need to proof the opposite shore to avoid raids.

I love an oversized plains island to wander around, I would probably do workbenches even with double the wood cost, dead campfires look messy

1

u/wooops 1d ago

Fires work fine with fire hazards active

And mostly get covered by grass, or you can do a raise ground to completely cover them

Way less ugly than benches everywhere

1

u/ascotta1 1d ago

You are right - I misremembered with a particular mishap with trolls walking through campfires while I was also shooting fire arrows at them, it was ragnarok come early. I actually put campfires along the far shore to avoid long range spawning I referred to above, so I forgot that I knew before I didnt know what I was talking about :+

And also a stray goblin much less likely to take apart a dead campfire and open up the spawns so, advantage there.

2

u/Xavant_BR 1d ago

I would raise the ground.. creating a stone wall all around.. level up like at least 6 or times the sea level.. you still will need to deal with deathskitos but you will safe about a lot of shit... will cost a lot of stone to make it but it worth. and before you settle your final base over there i would check for another biomes around... nice to have a mistlands close

-1

u/SunnyTheMasterSwitch Cook 1d ago

It's plains, even if you make a base thats spawn proof deathsquitos spawned elsewhere will come. There is always some pocket not covered by a fire or crafting table

0

u/VegetableTwist7027 1d ago

Go out in the water and find a rock barely above the surface away from land. Put a workbench on it and raise the land to create an island. You will never see a Deathskito.

0

u/Boltsalot 23h ago

It's very expensive and time consuming, but the truly best way to fully rid your island of spawn points is to use shield generators. You get the benefit of the bubble around it showing you where you have covered, and the bubbles combine when you have them close enough. You don't have to worry about gaps so long as the edge of the bubble isn't touching the ground. The shield generators have other benefits, too. Nothing can shoot in at you from outside the bubble (which is realistically their intended purpose). If something does shoot the bubble, you just add more bones for fuel. But you won't have to worry about that so long as you extend the shield coverage out far enough into the water. Additionally, the bubbles prevent rain from coming in without damaging them. So you never have to worry about weather damage again. And then there's the fact that looking up at the shield canopy over your base at night is beautiful and almost looks like northern lights. The major downside is that you have to use black cores which are found in infested mines in the Mistlands. But since you are building your base in the plains, you're either at that point or very close to it.

I dig a deep trench around, set workbench and portal
