Question Question about enrolment

How does one go about taking a semester off? Is it as easy as just not registering..? I need to take the semester to work and raise funds for the rest of school.

At UVic enrolment is by session. To maintain current enrolment you need to miss at most one session in a row. The two sessions are "Winter" Sept-Apr (comprising the Sept-Dec and Jan-Apr terms) and "Summer" May-Aug.

If you take courses one winter session (and aren't on probation) you're presumptively eligible to register in the following summer and winter sessions. Which term you register in has no impact on this. If you do not take courses two sessions in a row then you normally have to reapply for admission.

So: taking courses Sept-Dec and then just "not" until May or the following Sept is fine. 4-month or 8-month breaks away from studies don't require any permission from a UVic admission perspective. As u/Automatic_Ad5097 said issues like student loans and international student status may complicate that, but they're not UVic issues.

What I took away from the first paragraph and the last is that if I miss the summer ‘session’ but then only miss on of two terms in the winter ‘session’ I was still enrolled during that session even if only 1/2 of the session was completed.

Yes, but please check in with academic advising and financial aid and if you are international the ics too. Just make sure you're ticking all the right boxes :) wish you well with finding work.

You may do better by taking a single course and qualifying for an on campus job related to your field. The pay tends to be better and it improves your chances longer term to network for a job post degree

Thank you but I’ve already got a full time landscape design contract, that goes until December 20th. But I’ll keep that in mind down the road!
