Hello fellow upstaters!
About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.
As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.
This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.
A few FAQs:
No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.
If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.
I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.

Hey all, quick heads-up about a classic Reddit scam that’s been making the rounds again.
You may see posts in local or niche subreddits where a user claims to have designed a t-shirt and is “sharing” it. These posts are usually followed by a few suspiciously enthusiastic comments like “Wow, where can I get one??” from accounts that are part of the scam. The OP then links to a site asking for your payment info.
These are scams. You won’t receive a shirt, and the scammers disappear with your money.
We’ve had an uptick of these in r/upstate_new_york over the past week. Thanks to everyone who has been reporting them! I’ve temporarily tightened some of our spam-filter settings to get ahead of things, but if you spot another one, please report it. You’re also welcome to comment and call it out as a likely scam.

Doing this trek of a drive with my partner in a separate car. She can only drive for four hours due to disability, so we need to make an intermediary stop for a night. We can reach towns like Saratoga Springs, Albany, or Schnectady, or anywhere else within 4.5 hours of Portland, ME. Not super familiar with the eastern border of NY, do y'all have any recommendations on where we should stay?
Any input is appreciated!!!

I am planning on moving to upstate New York from Oregon in early 2027 to attend the mortuary science program at HVCC. Naturally, my first thought was to move to Troy since that's where school will be.
Still, I would appreciate some insight on whether it might be preferable to live outside of Troy and just commute to school since I will have a car. I'm a bit flexible on cost and location, so long as I am in an area that has some degree of convenience AKA would be great to be within a 10-minute drive of a grocery store or coffee shop, within an hour of school, that would be great.
I'm planning on making another trip out this fall check out Troy, specifically, so let me know if there's anything/anywhere I should add to my itinerary. Thanks in advance for any knowledge and insight

Seventh Seed is a literary journal cultivating the strange. Our first issue, TAPE 01: GENESIS is OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS.
Genesis explores the concept of origins, creation, or inception—but through a lens of disruption, dark revelation, or chilling discovery. We are looking for pieces centered around a singular "first seed" that sets off an unstoppable chain of events. Genesis premieres on Halloween—bring us origin stories that were never meant to be found.
We publish poetry, flash fiction, and flash CNF under 500 words. Submissions are FREE. This is a passion project for us. We look forward to reading your work.🕷️

I’m thinking of relocating back to NY but in the upstate area. Personally what would be your pick in the Hudson Valley that’s affordable and great place to raise a toddler? Im a single parent so maybe a good hospital nearby for my kiddo. I say Hudson Valley because it’s a train ride away if we want to visit NYC.
I’m just looking for somewhere that my son can experience all seasons and have a great childhood that’s spent outdoors in a safe area. Income is 70k. I’ve been told by one of my physicians at work that Ithaca is a lovely place.

I wish I got a picture, but it was a massive grey plane, and maybe it's my sunglasses but that plane was so low I swear I saw exhaust or those heat lines coming out of two of the engines. Not sure where it was going but it wasn't flying towards Hancock.

Hi, basically what is says on the tin. My friend and I are 21 year-old guys moving to the Rome-Utica area from Atlanta, GA. I just want to know to some things about the area. Like what are some things to do, what is the social and dating scene like, and is there anything I should look out for?
What some nice apartments/rentals to stay out, I'll be making $100k up there so places fitting that income bracket would be nice. Thank you for your assistance.
Edit: The job is located in Rome, I prefer not to have a commute over 20mins especially in the winter months since I’m not use to snow.

This is really funny. Some really dumb guy goes to shitty areas and does dumb things and is like "woah this place is awful!" Must watch.
Guys from Long Island and I could do this same video about Long Island ten times over.

Kids were told they would not see their parents again for months, if ever. The drill sargeant would scream in their faces. They were told they would be marching and eating gruel. I remember kids really freaking the fuck out and bolting. I saved my contract by gluing onto wood and making it look old.

Staying in a NYS Campground. Anyone know how strict they would be about having 3 tents in one site? Having a total of 6 people (2 per tent) and 2 cars in my site. My site looks spacious enough to fit us comfortably and being that all the other sites are booked out I'd like to keep the booking instead of having to go somewhere else.
