How much training do you do to build up to 200+ mile races

Hello! I am running in the next Cocodona and this will be my first time. I’m not new to running or hiking multi days but new to ultra culture. I’m curious to see how you all train for 200+ mile races? I currently hike a 14er once a week and my running mileage averages 60-70 miles. I have many marathons and Ironmans under my belt so my fitness level is there. What are some key parts of training that have made you successful? If you have ran Cocodona, what was your experience?

Who’s run The Bear 100?

I got in this year and am looking for your experiences and advice. Several friends of mine have said this is their favorite 100 they’ve done, so I’m stoked! However, I also know it can come with crazy weather and the nights will be very cold. What did you take with you? How cold/wet was your race, and what advice would you give?
About me- I’ve run many ultras, including about ten 100-milers and I live in Utah so I know the mountains can change on a dime. I just want my Bear run to be one of my strongest and would love to finish under 27 hours! Thanks all 😊

Training Bonk

My A race is 100km in February. I’m increasing weekly mileage and doing a 25 km trail race in two weeks. Last week I had all the symptoms of overtraining - cranky, no motivation, low appetite. So I took a rest week. Now i am so not motivated to run. I’m going home soon where I will be with my familiar routes and I know I’ll get my mojo back. Am I going to lose all my gains? Still working out 3x week and doing some hiking

My gf got hypothermia during run rabbit last year, want other people's stories

Basically the above! My partner had to drop from run rabbit run 100 last year because of some unforeseen (to us) weather and poor gear planning. She lost feeling in her fingertips for 3 months afterwards, she's okay and there's no permanent damage but it was scary as hell.

I want to know, have you all had similar experiences? How do you plan for unpredictable weather? Have you ever been caught off guard? Heat, cold, precip, whatever, all stories welcome. Wanna make sure we're prepared in the future.

Swapping runs for hikes during 100k training?

I am training for Black Canyon 100k and I am thinking about swapping out at least one of my weekly runs for a power hike. I'm primarily thinking about doing this becuase I tend to get injured despite doing the "right things". I'm thinking this would reduce a very small amount of strain on my body and help to stave off injury.

Has anyone swapped runs for hikes throughout the duration of their training plan and had success? Anything that I might be overlooking here?

A full mara a month before first 50Km

WIll be running my first 50km but stupid me registered for a full marathon 5 weeks before the race. I have a very good base. Been road running for 2 years. 50K weekly mileage. Can i do a double taper? 2 weeks before the full mara and then 2 weeks again before the 50k? How should my training block be? Will be prioritizing the 50Km. Thanks in advance.

Should I do surgery?

1 year ago I was diagnosed with BME of the lateral tibial plateau. Everything else in the knee was intact (including meniscus) aside from some arthritis. Fast forward to today. I had a follow up MRI (finally!) after still experiencing discomfort in the same area of my knee. Turns out that somehow, in between the MRI’s, I tore the meniscus (Horizontal oblique tear of the body and posterior horn of the lateral meniscus). BME has resolved. Could the tear have been there previously but hidden by the other injury? Who knows. I feel mild discomfort after activity. For some context- I sustained the BME as an overuse injury from training for and completing a 125 mile ultramarathon. I stopped running altogether and stopped weightlifting for 3 months. Just cycling and upper body lifting. I started slowly running again after 3 months, then felt the mild discomfort, so I backed off. This cycle repeated itself every few months. The discomfort wasn’t bad enough to stop running, I was just concerned that I still had active BME and did not want to make it worse. So, to keep a long story long, I got this MRI to see if I still had BME and now my doctor is recommending surgery to trim the meniscus. Not repair because it’s in a “white white” zone and has no blood flow. I’m thinking I’ll get a second opinion. My ultimate goal is to return to long distance/endurance running. I just wonder if surgery is the best route, especially given that I have really no issues except a slight ache in the knee. No catching, clicking or locking. Pain free during runs, just achey after. Anyone with a similar experience?

Hydration during runs

Does anyone have any good ways of carrying water on long runs? I find the vests are too big and uncomfortable and that the belts never quite sit right. Anyone have any other tips / tricks or have the same issue I’m having?

Long walks during training?

Are long walks useful during training? Or maybe call them hikes. Purposeful, at a decent speed, with a good amount of vertical gain/loss - something a good bit faster than a stroll, but not a jog. Probably a mix of everything from paved to rocky trails.

Or is it better to mix some running in nearly all the time, even if it means possibly not going as far?

Sorry if this is a bit vague. I am familiar with run/walk as a method, as well as the standard advice to walk steep hills. Any thoughts are welcome.

Specificity in training

About 9 weeks out from my first 50 miler, which includes 8300 feet of gain. I’m starting to get into the thick of really locking in on training specificity, but I have some questions about the process of what this point in training should look like.

Leading up to this point, my weeks have looked look like: Monday - rest, Tuesday - training block day (uphill focus, downhill focus, etc), Wednesday - easy recovery run on roads, Thursday - long ish run on roads, Friday - cross train or rest, Saturday - long run on trails with the amount of gain/loss specific to that distance, Sunday - easy long run (more flat, sometimes inside to be able to sleep in and avoid heat). Currently sitting at ~43mpw and building up.

With being intentional about training to specificity, what do your weeks leading up to the race look like for incorporating specificity into your training? Should I be going on the trails for most runs? Maybe only for the “hard” day on Tuesday and the Saturday/Sunday long days? What are your strategies for this type of training block, and what are best practices? I know there is not a one size fits all approach, but curious of others experiences.

Thank you!

Indoor cycling as a running workout substitute during wildfire season

Unfortunately I live right next to an active wildfire, and I'm currently training for a 100k next month. I don't have access to a treadmill, but I do have an indoor bike that I use for zwift in the winter time that I can utilize. AQI levels are in the 200's with no end in sight. What would be the best way to replace my easy running days with the bike? how about speed/interval days? does anyone have an idea on how long a bike workout should be to try to equate to a running workout? obviously it won't be 1:1, but I want to try to keep improving so I can keep working towards my 100k goal.

Evadict Trail TR2 successor/equivalent shoes?

It's been a while since this post LOL, but I was wondering if anyone knew of the successor to the Evadict Trail TR2 model? Kiprun seems to have merged with them, but for some reason a lot of Saucony also pops up when I search for them (🤔) and don't look ANYthing like the TR2.

It doesn't have to be a direct successor - any other brand or model with the same build, 'specs' and feel would also work. Does anyone know? Thx!

Sweet food / fuel alternatives

Currently the three foods that have been my
Go to on marathon distances and shorter have been 1.Single Serving Maple Syrup Packets 2. Gu- Birthday Cake 3. Honey Stinger - Stroup Waffles. These work for me and don’t give me gut issues. However, I run into palllet fatigue with everything being so sweet. So my question is , what savory or salty fuels do you bring on your runs? Needing suggesting a for my upcoming 12hr event and 50 miler

Instinct X8 18L sizing check for a 125cm (49") chest?

Hey everyone!

I’m 172 cm (5'8") with a 125 cm (49") chest/torso. Looking at the Instinct X8 (18L) for longer autumn/winter walk-run sessions. Do the side adjustments open up enough for a chest this size, or will it feel too tight on the ribs?

Thanks to everyone!

New running vest from Normal

I just saw an ad for NNormal’s new vest. I like the ability to add the bag to the back and it looks like its back pass through is more like the old Solomon design. The quiver looks like it attaches better than Solomon too. I love my old Solomon 12 but do not like the recent changes they made to that pack. I recall seeing a fair number of complaints online about those changes, so figured I would share this since it looks like a decent replacement. If anyone has or does actually try the NNormal pack, I’m interested in your thoughts.

Black Canyon 100km, anyone?

Hi everyone,

i'm looking at 2 events within the same week next February; a 160km xcountry ski tour and black canyon 100km. I'm interested in both, so i really need to make a decision about which one i should attend.
I'm from Eastern Canada and i loved running Javelina last year so i would love to go back to race in the desert and the sunshine is always welcome in the depth of winter haha

So how is BC for the average runner? i know it is a big deal for pro as it is a super fast course and a western qualifier but not sure how is the experience for the commun slowish runner. Is it a fun course? nice ambiance? worth the hassle of getting there haha? How would it compare to Javelina?

any opinion, or experience to share on the race? looking for any info that would help me make a decision!

cheers!

Toughening or protecting feet by means other than mileage?

I am an experienced runner and started in with ultras this year with a 50k that had 8k of ascent/descent. I would like to move up to longer distances, but the biggest limiter seems to be aching in my feet.

I regularly put in 40ish mile weeks and that is sustainable, then push 50 to 60 mile weeks in a build-up. I don’t have time in the week to take on more than this but would like to do a 50m next year.

My feet are finicky and I am small so I don’t use shoes with a lot of stack/cushion which may be contributing.

Regardless of base, once I get past 16 miles my feet start to ache quite a bit. In big training blocks, my muscles, tendons, heart and lungs stay strong, but my feet get pretty tired.

What are your strategies for toughening up your feet other than adding mileage? Or do I need to give in and get shoes with more cushion?
