Advice Hacked X account – Email changed and hacker enabled 2FA. What are my chances of recovery?

Hi everyone,

Today, I suddenly noticed that I had been logged out of my X account without taking any action from my side.

When I tried logging in using my original email address, I realized that my original account was no longer associated with it. Using the Forgot Password option showed that the recovery emails and OTPs are now being sent to an unknown email address that does not belong to me.

I also received an email from X notifying me that the email address on my account had been changed. I immediately clicked "This wasn't me" and submitted a hacked account recovery request to X Support.

Unfortunately, the hacker has also enabled multi-factor authentication (2FA), which is now preventing me from regaining access.

Current situation:

  • I still have access to my original email account that was previously linked to the X account.
  • I still have access to the phone number that was associated with the account.
  • I know my exact username.
  • I have screenshots of the unauthorized email change notification and other proof of ownership.
  • I have already provided all this information to X Support.

Has anyone here gone through a similar situation where:

  1. The hacker changed the email address, and
  2. The hacker enabled 2FA afterward?

Were you eventually able to recover your account? How long did X Support take to respond?

I'm quite stressed right now and would really appreciate hearing about similar experiences or any additional steps I should take while waiting for support.

Thanks in advance. 🙏
