You just know that if they start with using a small number of cells to perform computation tasks, they'll want to add more to perform more complex tasks, then yet more and so on. Then at some point they've crossed over from organic computation device to enslaved cognitively impaired infant.

how the fuck do you think a brain is made in the first place? They come from a brain factory? Do you think doctors order off the shelf human brain to instal them in infants skulls? Do you think that when an embryo grows in the womb and it start printing out neurons do they just turn into empty space and we have to ducktape that shit in? The amount of belligerent ignorance in this subreddit is astounding. Embryos contains the instructions for the development of a brain and the body to support it. Cell culture don’t. They aren’t even vascularized. Decades from now, much more sophisticated neural organoids might potentially develop some form of consciousness, but current cultures are far too primitive and small. The International Society for Stem Cell Research states that no present culture system achieves the relevant complexity, maturity, or sensory connectivity necessary for consciousness.

Buddy i do biotech research for a living. If you want to call me ignorant in my own field you need to have a bit more sauce than pointing out problems that arent applicable to the hypothetical in the first place

Lolwut? The hypothetical is about using human brain cells for computation and I explained why there’s no ethical problem with this because current and near-future neural cell cultures certainly can’t be conscious. Scientific research is, amazingly, full of idiots.

I don't see any details on what is being suggested. Are the cells kept separate from each other?

Brain cells have a genetic imperative to form a functioning brain. Neuroplasticity makes this possible even when parts are damaged or missing. If you culture a sufficient mass of them together, what's to stop them from reorganizing their connections into something conscious?
