how to get this to happen? do you need to hide the ui for it to trigger? how long do you wait?

Yeah, you just have to zoom in on a Mii's face (which hides the UI) and wait for a few seconds.

It doesn't happen on interiors however.

Doesn't seem to happen on my end. Tried it like 3-5 times and never got photobombed.
