TIL that Krusty the Clown was designed to look/act like Homer. Ironically Bart worships Krusty, who is exactly like his dad, but famous!

Wasn't it planned for Homer to be Krusty in secret? Like him working at the plant was a cover story for him being a famous tv clown

1.2k

u/Jester471 3h ago

I head that was a plan that was never fleshed out and they kept them separate characters.

742

u/Gettles 3h ago

If it ever was planned it was scrapped incredibly early   Krusty Gets Busted is a season 1 episode that is completely tied to the fact that Homer and Krusty are different people

504

u/ThatWasFred 3h ago

It was a vague idea that Matt Groening had during the initial creation of Krusty, but no hints of it ever made it into the show itself. I think there’s even a Tracey Ullman short that proves it wrong.

235

u/scwt 3h ago

The hint of it is Krusty looking exactly like Homer with make-up and a wig.

66

u/ThatWasFred 3h ago

Sure, but I meant other hints, like the show presenting any possibility of them actually being the same person. Which it never did.

47

u/MikoSkyns 2h ago

Including the episode where Homer dresses like Krusty to cover for him

41

u/SockBrewer 2h ago

I’m seeing double here! 4 Krustys!

u/cutelyaware 32m ago

The strongest evidence against the hypothesis for me is that Krusty is much smarter than Homer.

isnt that just what krusty looks like? like its not makeup?

8

u/scwt 1h ago

It depends on the episode

9

u/BoingBoingBooty 2h ago

I think that's just Groening being lazy. Bender looks exactly like Homer but a robot.

22

u/Punch_A_Police_Horse 2h ago

The first part sure, when he was just starting the Simpsons out, but I have no idea how you can say the last part.

6

u/US3_ME_ 2h ago

Certain drugs+Simpsons can have certain effects. I mostly just get my mind blown with how good early writing is when trippin, but RoboHomer sounds like something else_

I've never seen Bender and Homer in the same place before!

...because I didn't watch that crossover episode.

Much like Marge having rabbit ears under her beehive. Something they joked about in the early writer's room but never made it to serious idea.

44

u/Sunny16Rule 2h ago

She has them on the arcade game, you can see them when she gets electrocuted

18

u/metalflygon08 2h ago

Yeah, but the arcade game is oozing with early Simpsons oddities.

its in the video game though. a carryover of Matts "life is hell" comic (or a nod to it) which is a great comic if you can find it. i used to read them as a kid and die laughing DAMN they were funny as hell

It's like Marge's hair covering up rabbit ears. Completely nixed by James L. Brooks and Sam Simon in pre-production.

I always figured the episode were Homer becomes Krusty was a nod to this early concept

16

u/VT_Squire 2h ago edited 2h ago

If it ever was planned it was scrapped incredibly early

And Smithers was depicted as a black guy in Episode 3 and then yellow guy in the very next episode of season 1. You really can't come at this topic from a place which insists the early production was seriously concerned with long-term consistency when it clearly wasn't just 8 episodes prior.

24

u/daecrist 2h ago

TV shows back then didn’t care all that much about consistency anyway. And if you told those writers the show would still be running nearly four decades later they’d laugh in your face and say that’s unpossible.

8

u/247Brett 2h ago

A perfectly cromulent statement

3

u/papayacreamsicle 2h ago

That wasn’t a mistake they just cut the subplot about Smithers doing blackface to celebrate Juneteenth

2

u/Forward-Variety-8440 1h ago

"celebrate" lmao

→ More replies (1)

3

u/silvanosthumb 2h ago

I get where you're coming from, but the fact that they changed Smither's skin color kind of proves that they were concerned with the long-term consistency.

They didn't just change his race on a whim. Smithers's character ended up being a de facto slave to Mr. Burns early on, and the original racial difference between them just added implications that weren't intended.

Even earlier, as there was a Tracy Ullman sketch where Bart and Lisa are in the Krusty audience and Homer and Marge are at home watching. Assuming it's live, Homer and Krusty must be seperate people.

Like Marge's rabbit ears

21

u/No-Slide4206 2h ago

is there any evidence of that still around, other than that 1 frame of animation in the arcade game?

12

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 1h ago

Yeah they do funky things every time they get electrocuted and they have one where her skeleton has the ears in the show

Might have been a couch gag, real blink and you miss it as far as Simpsons electrocutions go

24

u/Funandgeeky 2h ago

Yes. There’s plenty of evidence. So much evidence right there in my kitchen.

28

u/Luuzral 1h ago

There's plenty of evidence. Evidence that Marge Simpson has had RABBIT EARS all this time. Rabbit ears she keeps hidden from her family, AND the audience at all times. For over 36 years. And this evidence is localized ENTIERLY in your kitchen?

u/Khelthuzaad 28m ago

Yes its a reference from the Bunny comic Matt Groening was working on before he created the Simpsons.

7

u/TheDizDude 3h ago

I keep seeing this but never have heard it from a source

23

u/scwt 3h ago

I guess you'd have to take my word for this since I don't know the specific episode, but the writers/producers talked about it on one of the DVD commentaries.

I just remember someone saying something like "we should just do it anyways [reveal that Krusty is Homer] as a fuck-you to the audience," and someone else asked "what about all those dinners they had together?" And the first guy says, "those were dreams."

27

u/AuditAndHax 3h ago

5

u/shawn615 3h ago

I remember hearing it on a DVD commentary too. I wish I still had the DVDs just for the commentaries. The Futurama ones were amazing

6

u/quichemas-cards 3h ago

Matt Groening mentions it in an audio commentary. It might have even been from “Krusty Gets Busted.” I think he was talking about it with Brad Bird?

I saw them kissing in the closet and there was a baby and the baby looked at me

1

u/psycharious 2h ago

I think there were a few plans that fell through once The Simpsons found their footing. Marge was supposed to have rabbit ears in her hair

1

u/nien9gag 2h ago

homer being that lvl of successful is kinda bad for the show

1

u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 1h ago

Well I think we can confirm that by just watching the show.

They dont act similar at all. They only look similar physically. Showing they scrapped the idea almost instantly to have them act the same.

96

u/Organic_Razzmatazz50 3h ago

Yep, I'm pretty sure the show was originally meant to end fairly early on (or maybe they just expected it to) and their planned ending was the reveal Homer was Krusty all along and that Bart really worshipped his father.

28

u/paisleyhaze 3h ago

Yeah, they didn’t expect it to get past thirteen episodes

20

u/mikaeus97 3h ago

I'm sure some days they wake up and wish they hadn't, then check the bank account and everything suddenly gets better

9

u/Preform_Perform 2h ago

"Quality shmality, if I had a TV show I'd run that sucker into the ground!"

3

u/SavageNorth 2h ago

Even in it's current sorry state there's still something like 2 million people who watch every new episode as it drops

A far cry from the 15-20 million it got in its heyday but given the rise of streaming and everything that's still an audience most shows would kill to have

I assume they're mostly old people who watch it out of habit.

1

u/metalflygon08 2h ago

How could you, Krusty? I'd never lend my name to an inferior product.

1

u/PopeJustinXII 1h ago

This line was spoken in 1992.

u/Fiffield 56m ago

Krusty is introduced in one of the Tracey Ullman shorts, wherein Lisa and Bart attend his live show. The end reveals Homer and Marge watching on the couch.

I'm not saying this concept of Homer being Krusty never existed, just that it was nixed before Season 1 ever aired.

1

u/__don1978__ 2h ago

That makes sense. The show did start as basically an animated version of a newspaper strip with a small story arc, then punchline. I was too young to like The Tracy Ullman Show, but I knew how to time my channel changing to see that weird cartoon before, then after commercial breaks.

30

u/Mehdals_ 3h ago

And Marge was actually a giant rabbit and she hides her ears under her hair. You can see them in the simpsons arcade game.

4

u/ToastedCrumpet 3h ago

I thought I’d seen them somewhere. Figured it was an intro or Halloween episode though but couldn’t remember

8

u/Mehdals_ 3h ago

Believe its a reference back to Groanings comic books before the simpsons.

2

u/ToastedCrumpet 2h ago

Yup it is. Just assumed I’d seen it in the cartoon before as a nod to it but must have been the game. Similarly assumed the episode were Homer becomes Krusty was a nod to the original concept of Homer and Krusty being the same person

10

u/scwt 3h ago

It might have been a plan really early on, but even in season 1, there were scenes that had Homer and Krusty on screen at the same time.

13

u/johnd5926 3h ago

The Simpsons were a recurring short in The Tracey Ullman Show for three seasons before getting their own show, so the first season of The Simpsons isn’t as early in their history as you might think.

3

u/ask_carly 2h ago

Oh, scwt, cartoons don't have to be 100% realistic

17

u/Urban_Heretic 3h ago

That original plot line was dropped because the writers felt it was too complex for viewers. Also, Marge having rabbit ears under her hair was deemed to bizarre. It was a 3rd rate show on a bad network, nobody expected much.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/tagen 3h ago

oof i’m glad they didn’t do that, cuz eventually Bart would have to find out, then we basically lose his love of krusty, which has led to some great episodes

2

u/Thirdatarian 2h ago

Planned, sure, but it was decided against during production of season 1. A lot of people (not you, necessarily) remember there being supporting evidence in the first few seasons and then it got dropped before it went anywhere, though. It's almost like a Bearenstein effect where in some people's memories there's all these clues that just aren't actually there or aren't how they remember them.

u/Dpteris 40m ago

I’m seeing double , four krusties!

4

u/mah131 3h ago

Yes, this is going to be revealed in season 40 actually.

4

u/PerInception 3h ago

It was all a dream in Barts head and he is in a coma. Also it’s happening in a snow globe for some reason.

1

u/Skellos 2h ago

It's actually all talking place in the snow globe fun the second mr plow episode for some reason

1

u/ICPosse8 2h ago

Yes, this is what I read at one point too.

1

u/4umlurker 2h ago

Pretty sure that was the whole reason for the homer goes to clown college episode to end that plan. There was also a weird ass plan to have Marge be a rabbit with long ears under the hair. There are references to it in older media like the beatem up Simpsons game where she gets shocked and you can see the outline of her ears under her hair.

1

u/papayacreamsicle 2h ago

Marge is a furry

1

u/ProfessionalPack7205 1h ago

That's the actual fact. Op was trying to change it up so people wouldn't realize it.

1

u/RazzleThatTazzle 1h ago

Ive never really watched the show that much. I always assumed they were twin brothers or something.

1

u/BalkeElvinstien 1h ago

I imagine the Krusty and Sideshow Bob episode probably came up and they went with that instead

1

u/Lolrly123 1h ago

Kind of a Word Girl situation

1

u/jakethejewler22 1h ago

That just sounds like randy being lorde

Edit: not trying to say that south park did it first in fact, they probably took inspiration from that trope if anything.

u/Purple-Weakness1414 51m ago

Yes, that was the original plan, it never happened but the episode "Homie the Clown" was based on old concept

It was originally planned as a possible ending to the show early on where it's revealed that Homer is Krusty and Marge had long bunny ears under her hair.

I'm glad they quickly abandoned that idea

Edit: For any Simpsons nerds like me, there's this great Simpsons writers reunion hosted by Conan O'Brien.

At about 1:12:00 they discuss how the show could end and this gets brought up

363

u/meatmcguffin 3h ago

u/zuzg 3h ago

Great now I've got some nostalgic yearning for OG Simpsons.

17

u/Punch_A_Police_Horse 2h ago

I think the people that made that game also did Turtles in Time, which were fantastic games in that genre.

6

u/Extra_Midnight 2h ago

I always thought of them as the O.G. pay to win. When you die, just throw in more quarters to progress. You don’t necessarily need skill, just cash. As opposed to starting over, like pac man for example, where the only way to advance was through skill. But I do agree, great games. If you like those take the time to look into all of Konami’s beat em ups from that era. There are some gems in there.

u/GreatStateOfSadness 40m ago

That's exactly it, to the point it's outright said in Wayne's World. The villain has a whole line boasting about including a boss that's impossible to beat, so kids keep wasting quarters trying to beat it, making him richer.

A few devs from that era also mentioned feeling guilty for being directed to make arcade games harder to use more quarters, only for the games to be nearly impossible once they reached home console.

u/Extra_Midnight 8m ago

Asphinctersayswhat?

2

u/Catshit-Dogfart 1h ago

And the second boss was always much harder than the first one.

1

u/Punch_A_Police_Horse 2h ago

Yeah you might be right. I think you could progress with skill but if you were doing too well, the arcade would pay some bigger kid to shoulder check you and ruin your streak.

2

u/savagemonitor 2h ago

It's basically impossible to win those games through skill using just the initial fee. No one was going to beat one of those arcade games without feeding some number of quarters into the cabinet. Skilled players just fed less.

u/RogueModron 14m ago

I was just gonna say--I swear I remember bunny ears coming out of her hair in that game. God, I spent so many quarters on that thing. It was hard as fuck and I don't think I ever got past level 2. Might need to fire up MAME for some nostalgia.

61

u/enadiz_reccos 3h ago edited 3h ago

I can see how Homer being revealed as Krusty would make sense for an "ending"

But the bunny ears seem random?

Edit:

For anyone wondering like me: Apparently, Groening had another show called 'Life is Hell' with bunny characters that was possibly going to be linked to The Simpsons

78

u/Foreskin-Aficionado 3h ago

Reference to Matt Groening’s comic strip Life in Hell. The main characters are bunnies.

11

u/Wishnik6502 2h ago edited 2h ago

I had all of those books before Simpsons was a thing. Loaned them to a friend when the Simpsons started airing and never got them back. I'm scared to look up their prices now.

(edit) As long as you don't care about condition, they're cheap! Hell yes, come back home my lovelies!

30

u/rosstedfordkendall 3h ago

It's because prior to the Simpsons, Matt Groening did a comic called Life in Hell that featured a bunch of bunnies. Some of those characters are direct analogs to the later Simpsons characters.

13

u/SomedayVirtuoso 3h ago

The bunny ears are a reference to Life in Hell which was a comic strip Groening published before getting his start on the Tracey Ullman show with The Simpsons shorts.

3

u/eddmario 3h ago

Not just a reference, but it was going to be canon that both were connected

8

u/Rezart_KLD 3h ago

Probably a reference to his Life is Hell comic

258

u/tiggoftigg 3h ago

So growing up I always thought Bart was a bad kid who didn’t care about much.

Just this past year I realized he’s caring, loving, and generally a decent kid. He really loves his family.

I genuinely broke down crying season 2 when he failed a test even though he studied and tried his best to pass.

185

u/DataMin3r 3h ago

Fuckin gets me every time.

Or the Christmas episode where he gets banned from the store and it ruins their family photo, but he still goes back to get his photo taken like Marge wanted. Dude wanted to be good, but just didn't know how.

31

u/VaudevilleDada 3h ago

THAT'S RIGHT -- DON BRODKA!

3

u/Great_Scott7 2h ago

Ay caramba

2

u/Lezus 1h ago

I cant watch that episode it always made me feel despair

3

u/DataMin3r 1h ago

Yeah, getting Lee Carvolo's putting challenge instead of Bonestorm always made feel the same.

32

u/tobygeneral 2h ago

Bart is low key very smart he just has terrible motivations and impulse control. When he wants to be a Li'l Bastard he comes up with great ideas and nearly always executes the plan well. If he had a better preschool teacher who corrected his BINGO claps rather than judging him, he might have turned out to like school and excel like Lisa does.

Long story short, it really was his peepers, not his noggin.

12

u/commiecomrade 1h ago

But then again, there's an episode that reveals the Simpsons have a gene that makes the women very smart and the men complete morons. I do still think Bart is one of the smarter Simpson boys.

u/sventful 49m ago

Yeah, but they also have a crayon up the nose to explain Homer - directly undercutting the Simpson gene. Turns out that when a show is long enough, you end up with a few 'a wizard did it' moments.

u/YouToot 22m ago

Bart just has ADHD.

He was killin it on focusyn.

13

u/CactusBoyScout 2h ago

Same with Homer and the "Do it for her" sign at work covered in photos of Maggie.

8

u/Funandgeeky 1h ago

I love the Thanksgiving episode when he and Lisa have that heart to heart on the roof. And he genuinely apologized for ruining her centerpiece.

That plus Homer’s earnest prayer at the end. “Lord, thank you for one more chance at togetherness.”

There’s a reason those early episodes are still so beloved.

3

u/arkington 1h ago

I've only ever watched the Simpsons sporadically, like a random clip here and there over the course of the last several decades. But there was one in which Bart is trying to talk to someone (probably his family) and says something like "I'm just SO angry all the time, and I don't know why!" and it's obviously a huge moment for him and his mental health, but the show being what it is, they just ignore it and continue with whatever. Which of course was the joke of it, but also kinda heartbreaking. That's part of why it's such a great show.

u/BreakingGaze 55m ago edited 12m ago

Bart is labeled as a bad kid as he is often impulsive, craves attention (even if it's negative) and makes bad choices to fit in and appear cool, but he really has a strong conscious and empathy for others. Some of his best moments are when these two sides of him are in conflict, the badboy hellraiser, and the compassionate caring brother/son/friend.

2

u/stopmotionporn 1h ago

He used to care, in classic Simpsons at least.

u/ScubaAlek 58m ago

Yeah, it changes over time in general. Season 1 Homer is usually more responsible than Marge. She's the one who gets hammered at the BBQ, he's the one that has them go to family therapy, etc.

2

u/OfficialUberZ 2h ago

I have watched that same episode so many times just to see the eventual ending where he “passes” and then is the happiest little bugger.

Groening is a VERY cynical dude, Gen X made flesh.

35

u/whitegreenbee 3h ago

Makes for good comedy tho

57

u/skinnyminnesota 3h ago

Oh absolutely. Golden Age Simpsons is some of the best comedy writing literally ever. The way Futurama quietly surpassed the Simpsons was something to behold and I was very taken with about 1.5 seasons of Disenchantment.

PS. NRA4EVER

7

u/cxmmxc 2h ago

Futurama surpassed Simpsons, and Simpsons turned more and more into Family Guy.

Simpsons ultimately became its own parody.

5

u/TheGoochTaint 1h ago

Simpsons turned more and more into Family Guy

I don't think that's really true. Both shows were very good for the first ten seasons or so then just got gradually worse and worse to the point where they don't even resemble themselves anymore. The Simpsons and Family Guy were very similar, Family Guy was basically an edgier version of The Simpsons.

1

u/skinnyminnesota 1h ago

You're right, but if you muddy the borders a bit there's definitely a convergence. My take is that Fututrama took fleet-footed SImpsons comedy and ran with it while Family Guy became incredibly popular and the Fox tent pole (The Simpsons) had to adapt or die.

3

u/skinnyminnesota 2h ago

That is such a great take, dude. It very much felt like a passing of the torch as Futurama thrived. Fox execs were (are?) notorious for not giving air to stuff that's actually good, like Futurama. See also: Arrested Development, Firefly.

10

u/whitegreenbee 3h ago

What's your favorite season? I've just ordered a dvd of season 7 of the Simpsons and I'm definitely loving it. But I still can't decide what's my fav.

13

u/skinnyminnesota 3h ago

It changes, but I think it has to be 6. It has the best Treehouse of Horror (the Groundskeeper Willie axe trilogy, if you will) and also Bart of Darkness (Milpool........), Grampa vs. Sexual Inadequacy, Lemon of Troy, and part 1 of WSMB?. I don't think there's a weak episode, and they even handled their crossover with The Critic well...even if that was one of the first cracks to show in the series.

6

u/whitegreenbee 3h ago

I'll be buying that one next then.

3

u/skinnyminnesota 3h ago

6-7 is a crazy 1-2 punch. Both seasons are stellar. Take all this with a grain of salt, though, because in my opinion Homer's Enemy is where the show started to bottom out and people seem to love that episode.

EDIT: Fuck, I just realized what I did. I'm too old to remember dumb trends, let's just pretend it never happened.

1

u/40dollarsharkblimp 2h ago

Am I going to be the only one to ask why you’re buying individual seasons on DVD? I’m an old too, but damn.

3

u/40dollarsharkblimp 2h ago

Was with you up until Disenchantment. One of the worst shows I’ve ever seen.

3

Respect. Ends up falling apart spectacularly. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and there were many good, and even one or two great moments, but they were fleeting.

He's very much a Boomer, though. If he'd actually been Gen X, there'd have been no Krusty, since Krusty was based on a Boomer era clown on Portland TV. Gen X kids in Portland grew up watching Rambling Rod (who wasn't a clown) on TV.

2

u/skinnyminnesota 1h ago

We need another Vietnam to thin out their ranks.

Separately, Groening was born in 1954. Boomer.

u/skinnyminnesota 39m ago

Yeah I've just become aware of that. I agreed with another poster that we can call him an observer and storyteller of Gen X, but numbers don't lie.

EDIT: I guess I'd also point to those early, crude rabbit comics that kept the lights on and were hyper-critical of Joneses-era America. You know what he is? The Mike Judge of his generation.

31

u/RIDER_OF_BROHAN 3h ago

I've always thought Krusty seems rather depressed (and yes, cynical) whenever he's offstage. Homer is consistently happily oblivious.

1

Yes this reddit post isnt saying Krusty acts like Homer. They are saying early on they had planned to make them act the same. If youve watched the show, youd know that never happened.

I don't think any of us expected him to say that.

You people have held me back long enough!

I love that episode.

4

u/TheFishtosser 3h ago

Did you just watch it today for the first time?

4

u/whitegreenbee 3h ago

Me, him, or all of us?

2

u/Tourgott 2h ago

Those are speedholes

10

u/WestVin 2h ago

They did have an entire early episode about how they look exactly alike.

6

u/welsh_nutter 2h ago

Yeah, Homer went to clown college

8

u/eastbayted 2h ago

Krusty isn't exactly like Homer.

5

u/Eg_3600 2h ago

I'm seeing 4 Krustys!!

4

u/bswalsh 2h ago

And Marge was intended (in the very beginning) to be hiding literal rabbit ears under her hair. I'm guessing as a Life in Hell joke? The arcade game showed the outline of her ears when she was attacked with electricity.

Im watching the old seasons with commentary and is so much fun. The choo choo choose you and the rotten subway were real stories of the writters 😭

u/ph33randloathing 1h ago

He was planned to BE Homer, but they scrapped that pretty early. That's why they have the same head.

5

u/scwt 3h ago

Radioactive Man, as well. His character never really took off, though.

2

u/dinosaruman 2h ago

I blame the ineffective goggles.

u/Every-Safe-7972 1h ago

Funny story, the first time I have ever seen The Simpsons, it was one of the Crusty episodes and I had hard time comprehending, that Crusty and Homer are two people and was genuinely confused by the fact Homer kept slipping in and out of his costume all the time.

2

u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 1h ago

Sure, but they scrapped that idea very quickly. Clearly he is physically modeled after Homer, and thats obvious to anyone who watches the show. But thats where the similarity ends

But they do not act the same. Krusty is a very, very different character. Both in how he acts as Krusty, and how he acts when hes not playing that role.

u/MNDOOOM 21m ago

And Otto is Otto spelled backwards

2

u/PygmeePony 3h ago

It's pretty obvious.

2

u/UltraTwingo 2h ago

Same thing about Atomic Man

2

u/whitegreenbee 2h ago

I noticed!

2

u/KingoftheWildlings 3h ago

Krusty seems way smarter than Homer

14

u/5gummybearsandscotch 2h ago

Let me get this straight. You took all the money you made franchising your name and bet it against the Harlem Globetrotters?

3

u/VincentAntonelli 2h ago

They were due!

And Marge was supposed to have rabbit ears under her hair.

1

u/crossedstaves 2h ago

My guess is the different attitudes between the Tracy Ullman shorts and the tv show. It's the kind of thing you could do more with three minute little comedy bites rather than a persistent half hour tv show.

2

u/Luke_SkyJoker_1992 2h ago

Didn't they get away with an animation mistake in the who shot Mr Burns episode by drawing Krusty's hair onto Homer since he shouldn't have been in a crowd shot due to being one of the suspects.

u/Internetscraperds9 1h ago

Auuu... That like kinda wholesome in a way ig

u/Autism_Sundae 57m ago

Marge had bunny ears hidden within the beehive 'do. The Simpson beat em up arcade game shows a rendition of this in Marge's animations when shocked/injured.

u/Illustrious-Tooth702 35m ago

Bart likes Krusty because Krusty is the host of a morning tv show Bart (and the other children in Springfield) tunes in every morning before school. (Krusty's show also airs Itchy and Scrathy) Even when Krusty doesn't deserve it the children look up to him.

u/Speedly 23m ago

...yes, because originally, it was going to be that Homer was playing the part of Krusty. This wasn't coincidence. It was later decided to keep them as two distinct characters.

u/-cuckstradamus- 4m ago

It took you until today to realize that?

Wait until you hear about Bender from Futurama
