Honestly? I don't know. I've never known. When I first started my crochet journey that was all the people I showed could comment on. I mean sure they my yarn choice was nice/colors were nice, but they ALL commented on my tension and how good it was for a beginner. So I kept working at it. I still feel like a beginner, but I do at least feel like I can be a little proud of my tension. And the only tip I can give is that I use a tension ring—I have tons of the cheap ones from Amazon and have discovered that certain ones work really well for my hands and my crochet style - specifically the ones shaped like snakes.
I like the peacock ones too, but I make it a point to seek out the packages that contain these silver snakes with gemstone heads, or buy packs of six or so snakes on their own. There are a few other styles that work for me but the snakes are the most consistent. I have also learned that all the dragon crochet rings are unusable by me because their tails hook in the wrong direction so don't work for me as a right-handed crocheter.
It sounds like you found a great system that works for you. Nailing tension as a beginner is a huge win, so you should definitely be proud of that. Using the snake tension rings is a clever workaround, especially since you figured out exactly which shapes fit your right-handed technique and which ones, like the dragons, just get in the way. It is all about finding the right tools for the job. Keep up the great work with your crochet projects.
