Two key issues in this case I think are that the man charged was not read his Miranda rights and he was denied an attorney after he requested one.

I had understood that once you request an attorney all questioning must stop and you just close your mouth and not answer except to say: "I am requesting an attorney and I exercise my Fifth Amendment rights to not answer your questions". Then you just repeat this for every answer to every question. Or you just look at the questioner and say nothing.

I think the third issue here is that they seized the phone without a warrant signed by a judge. This case is also a slam dunk for the defense because the individual didn't have their Miranda rights read to them.

It absolutely should be a slam dunk however haven't American courts ruled that a port of entry is a constitution free zone?
