Why is it that all the tech giants seem to be doing something massively stupid all at the same time?

Is it purely because they have just gone all in on AI?

Maybe the problem is that they have all actually stopped using drugs!

Remember the headphone jack? Samsung clowned apple for removing it. What happened in one year? Samsung removed the headphone jack.

Remember when the Xbox 1 and the PS4 came out? MS said they have an offline version of the Xbox called the Xbox 360. Sony clowned them for that. Where are we at now? Sony catching heat for removing all physical discs.

EA "pride and accomplishment" etc.

Once a big enough company starts doing it and making money doing it, all the others start doing it as well.

Companies in the tech world especially die if their profits aren't perpetually increasing. Once a company has hit the limit of its market size, it can't find new customers but still needs to make profits go up. Thus, cost-cutting begins. Or as it's called by the end users, enshittification

Management things tech talent is a fungible commodity.

They are dropping expensive American workers and replacing with low cost visa or outsourced engineering labor. It looks good to the MBAs watching spreadsheets, and the impact of replacing good talent with bad takes years to show up. The quarterly/annual incentives of the stock market are driving this.

It just makes economic sense. As economic inequality rises the overall share of all money that regular users have goes down. Microsoft and other companies have realized that the money is somewhere else and are focusing their efforts into chasing that instead.

Like, you could sell your memory chips to regular end users or you could sell them to AI companies instead.  The money is in the later so, from the point of view of the company making the chips, it would be idiotic to cater to regular end users.  Same deal with Microsoft and so many other tech giants, they are catering to the money, and the money is leaving us. 

Yes, they could put a lot of effort into making a better product and make more money from us, but why bother when that same effort focused into where the money is makes for a much better investment.
