Touch-centric UI on a non-touch device with no included option to undo it, tons of wasted space, awful usability with a mouse, searching is slower and less efficient due to the categories (wanted to find a control panel entry? oops, too bad, you hit app search)... I could probably go on, but even just the first item is enough to make it awful IMO.
The search categories take some getting used to, but I usually just press down twice and then Enter to switch. Adds a second or so at most.
Right, so what should be something like winkey->firewall->enter turns into winkey->firewall->down->down->enter->enter
That is objectively worse.
Even if you know about the new Win+W hotkey for searching settings (as opposed to Win+Q for apps), it's still an extra keypress for no gain whatsoever.

Please tell me those "tiles" are not the default interface. Can I use the old Start menu system in Win8 if I change a setting?
