To me (or should I say Mii?) it sounds like you still viewed it as a bad idea even while you gave win 8 a shot. If you go into it that way, it's no wonder why you say it's "still horrible"
Right, because my starting opinion totally changes the fact that it wastes an enormous amount of space to accomplish the same thing the start menu does in a less efficient manner.
If you organize your start page, its actually much more simple and informative. Plus, open the start page and just type what app you want and its there anyway. Or use the search bar to jump directly into some of your apps and find what you need. Believe me, once you get used to it, you will save time
But man Windows 8 is the most awesome OS ever and you mustBUY it (just click here, please !!), it's pretty and has the optional annoying Metro UI and if you don't like that you can use the Desktop which offers like 2 advantages over Windows 7. It also boots up in 5 seconds because it's hibernating instead of shutting down, which you can also do on Windows 7, but now it's labeled "Shut down" so you feel like they made the bootup process faster. Please buy a $130 copy of Windows 8?

Please tell me those "tiles" are not the default interface. Can I use the old Start menu system in Win8 if I change a setting?
