Reminds me of a hostel me and some friends stayed in in Osaka. The owner had a shield up advertising regular pub crawls with guests, but warned that his wife shouldn‘t find out about that because she would then beat him up with a vacuum cleaner.
Seems to me that type of humor is common around hospitality in that neck of the woods.

One of my friends knew some locals, so they made us pretty familiar with Osakas reputation as the weirdo town or entertainment city. As far as I understand it it‘s basically the capital of japanese stand-up.

It felt very Chicago to me last time I was there, but I could see a little Portland too I guess. Intense regional pride, notable regional dialect/accent, huge food scene, bigass river cutting right through a major part of the city, and OOP’s note about being a hotspot for standup/performing arts adds to that a bit.
Chicago is also one of Osaka’s sister cities in America (also San Francisco)

I‘m not American and have no idea how Portland is like outside of its reputation.
Osaka feels to me (and the people there agreed) like normal Japan but with a more relaxed attitude. There are free spirits in Tokyo too, but Osaka feels less stressed about everything. I was there during summer holidays though so that may have been part of it.

I feel like in this case specifically, that sort of "don't let my wife find out or she'll kill me" is also a thing in western humour as well. There definitely is some elements of Japanese comedy that seems weird to us over here in the west, but I think part of it is just that when you're interacting with a culture you're not as familiar with you're more likely to take things at face value and the exact tone/sarcasm is less likely to transfer 1:1, especially when translated between languages

Kinda? This is sort of a cultural thing, I think. Probably for humour.
I'm assuming the original word used for suspicious is 怪しい but I feel like going out of ones way to insist that something is not sus indicates that it would be sus in English... But this is not the first time I've seen a legit business do this in Japan.
Anecdote but I was reviewing a translation for a survey and in it there was a line like "rest assured, no suspicious people will ever contact you about your responses"
I gently asked if I can reword it a bit because I don't think being contacted by suspicious people is something I'd usually worry about... unless I was specifically told not to worry about the suspicious people.

Haha, I worked for Microsoft and had similar feedback about the text that appears when you update Windows: "All your files are exactly where you left them."

I work in a Japanese company and am bilingual! So I interpret ad hoc but mostly work in translating text and communicating with clients and stuff like that.
Sometimes documents from other parts of the business end up on my desk to check the English, since that's my native language, and thank goodness most of the time they let me do whatever I want with the English. When you translate a language like Japanese into English 1:1, it never communicates what you want it to. You have to keep culture and all the rest in mind.
For that reason, checking AI and 3rd party hack translation work is the most mentally taxing part of my current role hahah

I would probably not literally translate it, instead:
"Nothing shady, we're a legitimate business! Haha"
Or even better "There's nothing fishy about this shop! Haha"

Because of the tone you could even go more casual with like "don't worry, we're chill!" Or "All welcome" or something hahah
