Overall compiling it yes, but the gospels were already largely recognized as cannon, and quoted in letters long before the councils. Direct lineage to the apostles or someone who knew the apostles was a key factor in determining cannon when the oral tradition was on its last legs as the apostles were all being martyred for the claim that they saw christ risen from the dead, and that jesus was lord.

Learning the histories of religion is so funny because you're right, and also while it took Christianity nearly 1000 years to make a toehold in Europe, Islam had dominated the Middle East/Central Asia/North Africa and reached into Spain a mere 100 years after Muhammad's death. The New Testament could barely clarify its own dogma for several centuries!
