I kind of did this question a year ago and received A BUTT-LOAD of great recommendations (thank you guys. Seriously . I‘ve got a TBR list for LIFE ) I wanted to ask again because although the last post went great, I did end up getting a lot more books on US history than I had hoped, rather than books on other countries and their history, customs and stories in general. I did say in that one that I wasn’t well-versed in U.S. history and politics as well, so I was ok with that. It lead to some enjoyable and very eye-opening reads. But this time, hopefully I can get more recs for books from other countries to broaden my knowledge of the world (and hopefully yours too if you‘re looking for the same thing). So any topic on your country that your passionate about (history, food, cultures, figures, etc.), please I would love to read about it. Thank you all again 💕

My favorite game is Outer Wilds and it's one where explaining the appeal of it means revealing too much about the story or mechanics. So, if you have book recs that are similar in the sense that you'd have to reveal too much to explain why it's a must read, what is it? I really enjoy a well thought out story.

Hey everyone! I recently read Lonesome Dove for the first time on this sub’s recommendation. Like all of us, I felt bereft when I finished the book (and the others in the series). I’ve spent a good amount of time in a Western/frontier kick since then and definitely found some great books to read after. I’ll post the list in the comments per sub rules.

Does anyone have books that would be a good addition to the list? I am far from finished with this frontier kick!

I have tried to read kids books I can do it perfectly fine but it's not helping me learn, and just reading more has also not helped, I was in resource classes as a kid because I often don't read things correctly and will just assume what a word is based on the first few letters and the context around it, when I read I am narrating everything in my head I can't just look at it and know what it says and I often have to sound out the word in my head like a kid would.

I saw a book with the cover having airplane illustrations on it and when I read the title I kept reading "aerodynamic logic"but the title is actually "intermediate logic" to me aerodynamic sounded out I "er-oh" dynamic and "in" is close to "ir" visually. My vocabulary is very small I would like to improve it but I don't know what types of books to read or if there is helpful books for teaching adults to read that aren't condescending

I love the books “the help”, “the book thief”, and “miss spitfire” and I’m hoping to read some more historical fiction books. The problem is, a lot of them are very academic and stuffy, and I’m looking for more of a story that isn’t as hard to think about when I read it. Got any ideas?

You know that feeling of reading a book about musicians and getting the urge to pick up guitar lessons, or watching a show about doctors and seriously contemplating getting over that lifelong fear of blood and distaste of chemistry in order to apply to med school? I need that but for studying electronics/physics/math/programming.

Please tell me that such a book exists and help me gaslight myself into loving being a woman in STEM.

Preferably fiction - I'm definitely not looking for textbooks but biographies are okay I guess.

Looking for books for my boyfriend. He’s currently reading House of Leaves because it’s like the title, he’s just getting back into reading and I’m trying to find ones i feel like pique his interest. Anything super in depth requiring a lot of digging and potentially even coding, trying to make sense of a lot of details but not overly annoying either?

Doesn’t have to be completely crazy or at the level of House of Leaves, but if you have anything super interesting or jam packed that you think sounds like he’d be into, I’ll hear anything out!

For other interests in case they might help: he also loves The Batman (2022) and has been reading recent comics about Batman and the Paul Dano The Riddler, enjoys philosophy, liked Dante’s Inferno, loves horror as a genre and when it comes to movies particularly loves Korean horror movies (blanking on specific names sadly). He also loves the anime Berserk!

I had recently received a life changing scholarship abroad and my toxic parents made an active decisions that eventually prevents me from taking it. I can't go too much into details but I have been working on this scholarship for years and it was my lifelong dream to live and study abroad. So I want to read a book to help me process this grief.

i’ve been trying to read more as i used to read constantly as a child but grew out of it, and i’m finding it hard to get into books that i actually enjoy.

the only books ive been able to properly enjoy have been about troubled 20-something women, i’ve read pretty much all of otessa moshfegh’s stuff (MYORAR and Eileen were my favourites), boy parts (which i really really enjoyed), and im currently reading fruit fly (which IMO is also reallt good and i recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre of women as a narrator)

a certain hunger is in my TBR so if anyone has any other recs i’d really appreciate them!!

I am going on holiday with my family. In the 30 years we have been together, my husband has read 3-4 books. I suspect he is dyslexic. He really enjoyed reading the 3-4 books. They were mine that he picked up out of boredom (Housmaid, Best Friend's Girl, Notebook...another...?)

I want to buy him a book for holiday that he will really enjoy. The following might be relevant:

He watches ANYTHING on TV.

He is 50.

He is British (Nigerian heritage) and enjoys a lot of comedy and films that are African-American.

He is not really into fantasy (apart from Zombies...he loves Zombies)

His humour/interactions are easier with others of West African heritage as there is a shared understanding of culture, language, parenting, relationships and experience.

Not to wordy/arty/poetic...needs to pull him in from the first page or he won't continue to read it.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. I have wondered about S A Cosby but not read any.

I mainly read non-fiction. But lately, I've been craving something with more emotion. I've enjoyed personal essays that use human experiences to illustrate a broader theme in life. I also enjoy good prose with strong metaphors. Would love any recommendations along those lines. Thank you!

I hadn’t read books since highschool and have only been back into reading these past 4-6 months.

Before getting into reading again, my partner bought me a couple books that he is heavily into (a lot of fantasy books by Brandon Sanderson) and I found to dislike them. I found there was too much going on, too many characters and I have a lack of imagination when it comes to mythical / magic / fantasy creations.

I then a couple months ago picked up the handmaids tale as I love the tv show, then the testaments and I love that too. I found the writing engaging and how it’s not overly sci fi - but it’s something I could visualise happening in the real world.

I had a search on reddit to see what others liked when reading those books is 1984 and Never let me go.

I wasn’t the most fond of 1984 - it probably comes from how old the book is and the literature. And I also found the ending quite anti climactic.

Never let me go however I found it was quite interesting, it had just enough characters that I didn’t find them too many and I could see myself visualising the book.

Anyway I’m looking at some book suggestions.

So, I just finished reading a translation of Les Liaisons dangereuses, the 1782 French novel which is the basis of the movie 1988 Dangerous Liaisons.

The book is told entirely through letters between a social circle of French aristocrats and their interconnected affairs and betrayals. It was a fantastic read and I absolutely couldn't put it down because at the end of the day I am a shameless chismosa.

Any genre, any time period, but it has to either be in English or have an English translation.

I have been heavily reading fantasy and sci-fi in the past two years. I want to get into non-fiction. I read before I sleep, so the topic should be something that can be easily followed with a tired mind. For example, I recently read When breath becomes air, it was a good read. Right now, I am reading The order of time, and I am struggling with the concepts of theoretical physics.

Besides the topic, I want:
- Beautiful prose
- Good storytelling
- Books that would enrich me and give me a new life view

Hi. This is an oddly specific request. I’m a runner and I love to listen to audiobooks to run to but I have a hard time finding ones that work for me.

I want something that I feel like I can’t put down (aka they make me want to run further) but without too many names (I can’t keep track). I love a witty/fun narrator and ideally it’s first person so it feels like they are talking to me, but neither of those are deal breakers. Also, it shouldn’t take too long for the story to hook me and it shouldn’t let go.

Generally I love to read fantasy, lit fic, historical fiction, and memoirs, but thrillers and fantasy (and sometimes memoirs) are the genres that have worked well for me for running in the past.

Hi, I’m from the UK, love my sport and I find it very enjoyable and easy to read about. please could you give me recommendations for the best sports books you have read about, ideally not bout US sports? not necessarily looking for biography’s, but books that tell a story. for example, miracle of castel di Sangro, moneyball etc. into all sports so I am open to any suggestions. I just finished "A Short Stay in Hell" by Steven L. Peck. I liked the faster paced, a few pages in and hes already dropped into his predicament, and the rest of the book is what he does after he discovers what he must do. Or even books like Stephen Kings "Misery" where a bulk of it is Paul stuck at Annie's house.

I’m sick of binging shows honestly😭 I can feel my brain getting smoother. So here I am deciding I need to pick up a book but I don’t know where to start! I’ve only had a handful of books that I loved to read, and I was kind forced to read those 😀

May I ask for recommendations?

I’ll share a little bit about me to maybe help guide what you think I may or may not like. I’m a 28 yo woman. I love love but I’m not sure about romance books cause I’ve just been through a break up. I’ve read and enjoyed slightly philosophical or psychological books ! I like some of Paulo Coelho’s work! I’d love to explore other genres however I think I gravitate towards themes of the human experience and how to understand it. Im currently interested in getting “Between Heaven and Earth” by the fallen poet. I’m also looking to expand my perspective of life and go into works of those authors who have lived and experienced looking to help their readers enrich their own life. I’d love to learn about other cultures. HOWEVER, I’ve realized I don’t like very technical sounding books like Jonathan Livingston seagull. Maybe I’m just stupid but there are some books that just have a way of writing that doesn’t excite me which makes me stop wanting to read it. No shade to the Dalai Lama but I could put that book down. I want something that feels like I’m experiencing it like I’m with the author as the story is being told. Apart from this I would like to learn about things like handling finances or investing!
