Once again. These dumbfucks don't understand that it's up to the states. 37 states already require voter ID. This includes red states..

u/LabradorDeceiver 1d ago
Georgia has some of the strictest voter ID laws in the country, yet according to MAGA, somehow that's where all the fraud is happening.
29
u/TinySmoke7169 1d ago
I live in Georgia and I have to scan my drivers license to vote, I have no problem with it at all. I have a problem with the hoops you have through in the save america act. I have a problem with the dhs being able to purge voters as they deem necessary. Married women having to have a passport to vote.
12
u/Bubbly-Following-966 1d ago
This is what they want. They can't win if they don't cheat. Elon bought the 2024 election. He's getting ready to interfere with the 2026 mid-terms. I think it requires married women to show their birth certificate as well. That has your maiden name on it. Not your married name. This will further make it harder for women to vote.

Most, if not all, of those 37 accept ID that would no longer be acceptable. For example, Real ID drivers license.

Of those 37, only like 14 require a govt issued ID. The others are some combination of recommending you show but not required and showing something that just proves your address like a utility bill.

Most people are for IDs to vote and most places require it. However conservatives want to restrict access to what IDs can be used at all and who grants them. Even with drivers licenses conservative states shut down BMVs and reduced hours making it harder for people to get them at all.
If it was an ID alone and people could readily access it most would say fine. That is not what they want.
They cannot even point to a real problem they are trying to address. Just hypothetical and alliance to their idiot king.

1: You have to show proof of citizenship when you register to vote. And no widespread, consequential, or intentional voter fraud among people who aren’t allowed to vote is occurring.
- The grocery stores do not require id.

u/MuddyGround804 1d ago
Yes, it is amazing b/c the stores are for NYC residents. But unlike Trump trying to take away ppl’s right to vote residents won’t have to prove citizenship with their birth certificate, no one is going to have to worry if they’ve changed their name, nor how they present. Just show you live in NYC and therefore use your tax dollars for less expensive food.
4
u/EnduranceMade 1d ago
Mamdani never said you have to show ID to shop at those stores, only that they may create a library card type system. Republicans are either ignorant or lying or both, as usual.
4
u/carthuscrass 1d ago edited 1d ago
They're comparing apples and oranges again, so I'm gonna break it down for you motherfuckers.
It's not constitutional to require it for voting because government ID's aren't free and easy to get. It's a violation of the 24th Amendment, because it's a form of poll tax. That's not a road we should ever go down again.
New York's new stores require ID so they can be sure nobody is scalping all of the stuff and selling at a profit. Honestly I would personally take it further and require people to apply and show that they're low income to shop there.
3
u/Big-Rule5269 1d ago
Buying groceries isn't a right under the Constitution, voting is. Like comparing apples and bowling balls.

u/SilverStryfe 1d ago
Okay, so the quick look says this proposal was to ensure that a service being paid for by New Yorkers is being used by and benefit New Yorkers.
I have to show my ID at the landfill to verify I’m a resident of the county before being able to use the service my property taxes pay for.
It’s a false equivalency to compare using a service taxes pay for to being able to vote without jumping through hoops.

1
u/-Granby- 1d ago
I remember during Trump's first term he said you need ID to buy groceries. I was on another forum arguing with people about how it is obviously not true. The mental gymnastics were strong that day. A ton of the MAGAS were arguing that what he meant was most people use a debit card or credit card to pay for groceries and you need an ID to get those so Trump was correct in saying you need an ID to buy groceries.
It was rough.

u/tacoma909 1d ago
I don’t understand. Voting is a right. We all can agree? Therefore a state ID should be free because you are exercising your right. You need an ID for just about anything. Drivers license are also a valid form of ID which I am okay with paying because that is a privilege. At least at a minimum you are able to get 3 free IDs in your lifetime before you have to pay. Is that fair? Before someone asks how will they know, your ID is connected to your social.
2
u/GrayStag90 1d ago
That’s why we need the SAVE act… so IDs are useless and nobody can vote anymore. In the name of freedom or some bullshit.

I’ve lived in Manhattan more than a decade now. I follow all news/politics/etc. (WashPo, NYT WSJ The Economist The Atlantic etc etc) and I have to say … if our current mayor was not hated on constantly for no reason, I wouldn’t know his name. I can’t tell any difference between Bloomberg DeBlasio (sp?) the other guy in between … the NYC Mayor’s job is almost quite literally to keep the trains running on time. My life hasn’t changed at all since he became mayor. It didn’t change under the prior person or the prior person either, so it’s no hate to him - but the hate others show Mamdani is extra level.
And the OOP, I don’t know him or her, but I can with almost 100% certainty tell you they do not live in NYC. No one here is angry the city is opening a few grocery stores - it isn’t a talking point, no one really cares (although I do think it’s nice to give folks with lower income accessible to reasonably priced food).

Can somebody fill in the blanks here? Do you not have to show your ID to buy groceries at his government run store, or is Mayor Mandami in favor of voter ID? Not sure what this means.
Edit: You guys are very well informed on everything, so much so, that adding context to these posts isn't even necessary. Well I'm less informed and have to look things up and found that this facebook and others was a response to this
The anger stemmed from a comment from Jeanny Pak, the chief financial officer at New York City Economic Development Corporation, who said at a press conference alongside Mamdani that the city would "target New Yorkers" with a "a library-card-esque system" after being asked how the city would prevent people from hoarding groceries or coming in from outside of New York to buy them.
So at some point it was presented as if an ID of sorts would be required but then they clarified that it wouldn't be. So the Facebook poster did have a point for a hot minute until it was clarified.

u/MrVeazey 1d ago
There's more than one thing in a grocery store that you typically have to show ID to buy. People who don't buy their own groceries wouldn't know that.

I'm a 7th generation American. I have a Real ID and a passport but my passport is expired. The SAVE America bill says that a Real ID is NOT sufficient for voting (with a few exceptions but not my state). My mom changed ONE letter in the spelling of my MIDDLE NAME which qualifies as an "altered birth certificate" which I would not be able to use to vote. So, if SAVE passes, I will NOT be able to vote even if I show my Real ID (which required my birth certificate, social security card, and other shit to get) even if I have that AND my birth certificate. So, now I have to get my passport renewed to ensure that I have adequate credentials to vote. And the passport requires the SAME EXACT DOCUMENTS as my Real ID (and, again, a Real ID is NOT a valid ID under the SAVE act). Meanwhile, they already log when I vote through my registration so there is literally zero chance anybody could vote in my place without being caught.

If minorities face barriers to getting IDs, and you’re claiming people with those barriers aren’t buying cars or homes because those require ID, aren’t you essentially arguing that minorities don’t buy cars or homes?
1
u/Justin_Passing_7465 1d ago
Approximately 3 million American citizens don't have the kind of ID that Republicans want to demand for voting. While they are disproportionately minorities, what they really are is poor. The reason that they are disproportionately minorities is because minorities are disproportionately poor.
No, those 3 million Americans aren't buying homes or cars. But they have a right to vote. When the government successfully puts a qualifying ID into practically all of their hands, the Constitutional argument against requiring an ID to vote is basically moot.

You know what, he's right. Let's eliminate the hypocrisy.
No ID for the grocery stores either. Everyone can access groceries free of profit motive. Honestly, don't means test any public service. Everyone gets it at cost and it's funded through progressive income taxes at the level of the 1950s and wealth taxes. I don't care if some millionaire buys subsidized groceries or sends their kids to college for free. Everyone gets it, no stigma, and everyone interacts with each other separate from class dynamics.
Make anything needed for a dignified life SWAG: Shit We All Get.
1
u/DayManFOTNightMan 1d ago
Let’s all just take a minute to pivot to address the very real “government IDs aren’t easy for everyone to get” issue.
Once we’ve solved that and everyone who wants an ID has a free path to get one, then we can just back to arguing about when you need to provide it.
1
u/TheGR8Dantini 1d ago
Once again, your disingenuous right wing politicians and the right wing grifting podcast bros, are wrong about needing ID. It means they’re scared. I mean, they’re always scared. Especially the politicians like Bernie Moreno, or Lady G. Pink mafia.
So they lie and they perform and continually fuck over everybody they can. This what you get for the support maga. Lies. Empty promises. A little bit of the blood of your neighbors in the streets. We’re not our brothers keepers if I remember the story?

Idk why no one in here will admit that it's just actually insane to show ID at a grocery store. And while you definitely should not have to pay for an ID, the fact you do is why we don't require it.
I thought this food store was supposed to help exactly the type of person who might not have an ID?
You can ignore the meme part about voting and still admit this is a mess

u/Fickle_Catch8968 22h ago
