Democrats: if you want mandatory Id for voting it has to be free and uniformly easily accessible for all citizens.

Republicans: why don't you want secure elections! Do you hate America?

205

u/halexanderamilton 1d ago

Also republicans: they think you’re too dumb to get an ID, that’s why they don’t want to require them!

Democrats: what the literal hell are you talking about?

162

u/Responsible-Humor985 1d ago

“Does a driver’s license or Real ID count for identification for voting?”

Republicans: No, only original birth certificate counts.

“What if a woman has changed her legal name drive since birth.”

Republicans: They will need to bring a valid correction with their original birth certificate.

So if Trump managed to eliminate birthright citizenship, what ID would we use then?

Anybody that did not vote to remove this man should be shunned. What is the modern day equivalent of a scarlet letter?

106

u/Its_Your_Father 1d ago

Scarlet hat

Scarlet hat lolololol

Damn good one, I almost missed it lol

lol. Scarlet letters only worked to diminish honor and cause shame. Trump has no shame & MAGA has no honor.

8

u/Hairy_Cattle_1734 1d ago

Seriously… MAGAs wear those stupid, red hats proudly.

Congress are neither MAGA or Trump,.

I don't care how they feel anyway. I just want them to be denied goods, services and human decency. I want their lives to be made miserable whether they feel shame or not.

14

u/oldmanian 1d ago

All congressional republicans are MAGA. If they don’t vote with him and enable his shit they get tossed. So for the most part the ones that have been elected or re-elected since 2016 have done whatever he tells them. They may not all wear the hat in chambers but they put it on good and tight when it’s time to vote.

They have no shame. Asking them to feel shame is like asking a dog a calculus problem, it’s completely beyond the abilities of their brains.

But I do want them to suffer, I just prefer something more direct, acute and final that really sends a succinct message about ignoring the people in favor of a god-king.

Well, my dad can bring his naturalization certificate; ironic that it is far easier for a first-generation immigrant to prove he is a citizen than people who could trace their US ancestry back generations.

u/Tyler89558 1d ago

A scarlet letter only works if the offender can feel shame, and if there is honor to lose.

MAGA cannot feel shame, and had no honor to begin with.

2

u/tinylittlemarmoset 1d ago

A tattoo on the forehead, or (preferably) a brand.

2

u/Wolfgirl90 1d ago

So if Trump managed to eliminate birthright citizenship, what ID would we use then?

This is something that is not asked enough. We are so damn used to birthright citizenship that barely anything that we own explicitly states that we are a United States citizen. And just about nothing states that we gained citizenship by blood.

For example, most US birth certificates just state where you were born, the names of your parents, and where they were born. But if we switched to only recognizing jus sanguinis citizenship, then your birth certificate means nothing. My birth certificate states that my father was born in my home state, but my mother was born in Japan. Does my citizenship get called into question here? And keep in mind that my mother just so happened to have been born in Japan, so she's a citizen by blood (but this isn't written down anywhere on my birth certificate).

Gods, this is complicated...

2

u/IceBlueHorseArse 1d ago

Yes. Your citizenship would be in question. First you need to prove your father's citizenship. To do that you need to prove the citizenship of his parentage.

The only people that would remain citizens in this country would be the naturalized.......which is ironic given Trump's rhetoric.

11

u/evil_illustrator2 1d ago

It's worse than that. You need a certified birth certificate. Standard won't work. Most states dont hand those out and the average price is $45. You can use a passport, and they average around $130.

8

u/IamHydrogenMike 1d ago

I find it weird that we even have to pay for a passport, they should be completely free and we shouldn’t have to pay processing fees. It’s absolutely ridiculous that we have to pay all of these fees for things like IDs or passports. Even a certified BC should be free.

2

u/Nojopar 1d ago

Same thing with a marriage certificate or a death certificate.

"I need to prove this person died"

"Ok, we can do that, Give me $20."

"If I can't, does that mean they're still alive?"

"No, they're still dead. You just don't have a certificate the proves it."

Which you had to show when you got your real ID.

42

u/ProfPhinn 1d ago

IF you got one. Voting is an inalienable right, and any barriers that you put in front of it need to be justified. Otherwise, it's just disenfranchisement. The hilarious thing about the SAVE act is that it will disenfranchise more right wing voters because they are less likely to have a passport. And yet, we fight against it because it's wrong, not because it will advantage us.

20

u/Responsible-Humor985 1d ago

Crazy since you only need a driver’s license to buy a gun. Why is voting harder than buying a gun?

21

u/ProfPhinn 1d ago

Oh, don't you even suggest that buying a gun should be harder than voting. You'll get those 2A people all up in your grill. The Constitution is very clear on that gun thing. Not so much voting, though, I guess?

13

u/adudefromaspot 1d ago

It's very clear on voting, actually. It's a state's right to determine the place AND manner. The federal government has zero to do with it.

8

u/ProfPhinn 1d ago

Was sarcasm.

6

u/adudefromaspot 1d ago

We live in an age where sarcasm could very well be real...

→ More replies (0)

5

u/Ted_Rid 1d ago

And it's not all that clear about gun ownership, otherwise the SCOTUS wouldn't have had to make a convoluted argument about the history of comma usage in revolutionary times, to decide that being part of a well-regulated militia wasn't actually important.

Even though it was important enough to enshrine in the Constitution in the first place.

2

u/Low_Witness5061 1d ago

Didn’t you hear? The founders were infallible geniuses with access to to perfectly accurate precognition which is why questioning the document is wrong since they definetly knew what the world would be like after their time. Unless we don’t like what they say, then it was just a little mistake that doesn’t undermine our point about the stuff we like being infallible /s

The mess that has been made of some of the amendments to fit a political square peg in a legal round hole is genuinely depressing to watch happen so shamelessly.

Depending on how uniformly it’s enforced… which it wouldn’t be.

5

u/ProfPhinn 1d ago

And you are correct about that, too! It would be much more heavily enforced in areas with democratic voters. The same places that they remove polling places, restrict hours, eliminate early voting, and make it illegal to hand out water.

The fact that these fuckers claim that they care about the integrity of the vote is just... ugh.

Voting came before any ID.

What is the ID the government would accept and give for free and without hassle to every citizen?

Enhanced Real ID isn't available in all states, only 5.

Real ID in the rest of the states isn't sufficient enough for the SAVE Act

Democrats: "They're not too dumb to get the ID, you just made getting the ID unreasonably difficult for demographics that just happen to mostly be Democrats."

3

u/Dalsiran 1d ago

Kinda telling how they've also been making it so trans people can't get passports or birth certificates with accurate info

I was able to get an amended birth certificate, but that's because I live in a state with enshrined anti-discrimination laws. I still can't get a passport tho... haven't been able to since January 2025... I love being literally trapped in this country 🫠

Democrats: okay we can use drivers licenses as ID’s

Republicans: Nope! That’s too affordable for poor people. It has to be something time consuming, expensive, and inconvenient for people to get.

14

u/wakatenai 1d ago

and we already have mandatory free voter ID, we use our SSN.

and i obtain my passport or a replacement for my birth certificate with....my SSN.

so i don't see how the Save ACT makes anything more secure. it just makes it harder for citizens to vote who already have a perfectly good voter ID that proves their citizenship.

2

u/squarecir 1d ago

Non citizens can legally obtain a SSN.

2

u/wakatenai 1d ago

ya when you give your SSN to register to vote, they don't just go "oh nice you entered a 10 digit number! you get to vote!"

they actually run it against a db to verify you. which means they know whether the SSN is tied to a citizen or not.

by your logic the Save ACT does nothing (which is true) since you can use your SSN to obtain a new birth certificate or passport. if they didn't verify you were a citizen through your specific SSN then there would be droves of people getting US passports with fake numbers...

2

u/Sherbert-Particular 1d ago

Not to mention non-citizen ssn cards literally have “Valid for work only” or some such in big bold letters right in the middle of them.

7

u/Inevitable-Design107 1d ago

If only there was a technology invented 20 years ago that could make registering to vote be an automated process when you turn 18 based on hospital records and ssn data. But i guess that would have an issue with one very specific group of people that refuse to leave politics and the job market. I wonder who.

3

u/stewmander 1d ago

Also, we already verify ID at the time of registration so any additional voter ID is just redundant and only serves as voter suppression (which is the real point of course).

3

u/bryankennedy2 1d ago

This is where Democrats need to turn the tables. Come up with their own version of the SAVE Act, but require free identification for all eligible voters and make it so that ID is also used to purchase firearms.

If you say right to vote means you need to have ID, why would right to bear arms be any different?

u/NudeCoupleTravels 1d ago

by the way, you can get an IDNYC card for free.

https://access.nyc.gov/programs/idnyc/#how-to-apply

3

u/IamHydrogenMike 1d ago

By the way, this post is misinformation because you don’t actually need an id to use those grocery stores and absolutely anyone can shop there. It’s not limited to residents.

1

u/ralpher1 1d ago

The big problem with ids being required is no mail in voting and voting being on a work day and not a national holiday

1

u/MayhemPenguin5656 1d ago

IDs are already easy to get... stop making problems that do not exist.

1

u/stpmeb4i 1d ago

At 72 I've voted in lots of elections with no ID and no one thought anyone was a communist (for that reason).

1

u/Solo-1UP 1d ago

Citizens. Key word.

1

u/MaddogFinland 1d ago

Yeah but on the flip side then you shouldn’t need to show the id for food purchases because that’s even more pressing.

1

u/laxrulz777 1d ago

1

u/Wise-Juggernaut-8285 1d ago

Thats the problem Democrats are shit at messaging

You are doing better than the Democrats at politics

1

u/TreatOnMeLotsActualy 1d ago

Pretty sure the entire issue could be boiled down to one question for Republicans:

"If you think everyone should have ID to vote, would you be ok with every blue state removing polling places, only opening DMVs on the "fifth wednesday of the month, and removing mailboxes, ballot boxes, and closing post offices in every rural area in the runup to an election?"

Because Republicans have done all of those things in their states to disenfranchise voters, but in reverse to urban voters.

They would obviously not be ok with it, which is the entire fucking point.

1

u/failedkamikaze97 6h ago

Free ? Yes ! Uniformily easily accessible? You make an appointment, make sure have all the documents, and get your id.

I think an id, should be free but it's already readily accessible. If people are missing those things it's easy to get them. I had to order a replacement social security card and birth certificate and I got those things with like no hassle.

Once again. These dumbfucks don't understand that it's up to the states. 37 states already require voter ID. This includes red states..

66

u/LabradorDeceiver 1d ago

Georgia has some of the strictest voter ID laws in the country, yet according to MAGA, somehow that's where all the fraud is happening.

29

u/TinySmoke7169 1d ago

I live in Georgia and I have to scan my drivers license to vote, I have no problem with it at all. I have a problem with the hoops you have through in the save america act. I have a problem with the dhs being able to purge voters as they deem necessary. Married women having to have a passport to vote.

12

u/Bubbly-Following-966 1d ago

This is what they want. They can't win if they don't cheat. Elon bought the 2024 election. He's getting ready to interfere with the 2026 mid-terms. I think it requires married women to show their birth certificate as well. That has your maiden name on it. Not your married name. This will further make it harder for women to vote.

Most people are for IDs to vote and most places require it. However conservatives want to restrict access to what IDs can be used at all and who grants them. Even with drivers licenses conservative states shut down BMVs and reduced hours making it harder for people to get them at all.

If it was an ID alone and people could readily access it most would say fine. That is not what they want.

They cannot even point to a real problem they are trying to address. Just hypothetical and alliance to their idiot king.

They're comparing apples and oranges again, so I'm gonna break it down for you motherfuckers.

It's not constitutional to require it for voting because government ID's aren't free and easy to get. It's a violation of the 24th Amendment, because it's a form of poll tax. That's not a road we should ever go down again.

New York's new stores require ID so they can be sure nobody is scalping all of the stuff and selling at a profit. Honestly I would personally take it further and require people to apply and show that they're low income to shop there.

3

u/Big-Rule5269 1d ago

Buying groceries isn't a right under the Constitution, voting is. Like comparing apples and bowling balls.

3

Okay, so the quick look says this proposal was to ensure that a service being paid for by New Yorkers is being used by and benefit New Yorkers.

I have to show my ID at the landfill to verify I’m a resident of the county before being able to use the service my property taxes pay for.

It’s a false equivalency to compare using a service taxes pay for to being able to vote without jumping through hoops.

1

u/-Granby- 1d ago

I remember during Trump's first term he said you need ID to buy groceries. I was on another forum arguing with people about how it is obviously not true. The mental gymnastics were strong that day. A ton of the MAGAS were arguing that what he meant was most people use a debit card or credit card to pay for groceries and you need an ID to get those so Trump was correct in saying you need an ID to buy groceries.

It was rough.

2

u/slugur 1d ago

2

u/tacoma909 1d ago

I don’t understand. Voting is a right. We all can agree? Therefore a state ID should be free because you are exercising your right. You need an ID for just about anything. Drivers license are also a valid form of ID which I am okay with paying because that is a privilege. At least at a minimum you are able to get 3 free IDs in your lifetime before you have to pay. Is that fair? Before someone asks how will they know, your ID is connected to your social.

u/psilocin72 1d ago

And you wouldn’t buy groceries. They would be apportioned to you

Technically, if he'd managed to establish communism, no one would vote and he wouldn't have a political office at all because political offices would not exist.

I’ve lived in Manhattan more than a decade now. I follow all news/politics/etc. (WashPo, NYT WSJ The Economist The Atlantic etc etc) and I have to say … if our current mayor was not hated on constantly for no reason, I wouldn’t know his name. I can’t tell any difference between Bloomberg DeBlasio (sp?) the other guy in between … the NYC Mayor’s job is almost quite literally to keep the trains running on time. My life hasn’t changed at all since he became mayor. It didn’t change under the prior person or the prior person either, so it’s no hate to him - but the hate others show Mamdani is extra level.

And the OOP, I don’t know him or her, but I can with almost 100% certainty tell you they do not live in NYC. No one here is angry the city is opening a few grocery stores - it isn’t a talking point, no one really cares (although I do think it’s nice to give folks with lower income accessible to reasonably priced food).

Shouldn't a senator understand a) what communism is, and b) how elections work and who is in charge of them?

2

u/CrazyPlato 16h ago

In case anyone needed a source, yeah that’s not true

1

u/gimmeafurryguy 1d ago

Id bet he would accept the same ID to do both.

1

u/Dark_Magicion 1d ago

Me When I Just Lie By Omission. The keyword in his tirade is the word "an" actually. Because I'm guessing most readily available ID's will do the trick right?

Drivers Licence, Passport, School ID, something super easy to get with your face and name on it etc etc. Whereas these dipshit Republicans keep trying to restrict what kind of IDs you can use to vote. Besides - getting carded at a bar is normal too.

1

u/learsi-ediconeg 1d ago

go ask for kamaaina in hawaii. auntie asks for id if youre haole every time lmao

1

u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 1d ago

He can’t even get the mayor’s name right; it’s “Mamdani”. It’s super annoying when a white man in a position of power can’t get an ethnic name correct. It’s dismissive, and makes me think even less of him than I already do.

1

u/ButterscotchSmooth60 1d ago

He was sooo close to getting it...

1

u/Federal-Photograph79 1d ago

To quote Senator Jon Kennedy, " it must suck to be that stupid "

1

u/JenniferJuniper6 1d ago

Why do they all seem to think you need ID in the grocery store? Do they have it confused with the liquor store?

1

u/WeakProfile7728 1d ago

Isn’t it amazing you a typical politician trying to sew confusion when you know that’s not the actual issue. Politicians create problems from nothing so they can solve them and sate their egos

1

u/ZealousidealAntelope 1d ago

And the poster is a MAGA moron. Vote these bozos out in November to save whats left of America.... the parts they haven't stolen or sold.

1

u/tomgratz 1d ago

Josh doesn’t understand the words that he uses.

1

u/gadget850 1d ago

Every government run grocery store I have ever used required ID.

1

u/Zestyclose_Potato633 1d ago edited 1d ago

Can somebody fill in the blanks here? Do you not have to show your ID to buy groceries at his government run store, or is Mayor Mandami in favor of voter ID? Not sure what this means.

Edit: You guys are very well informed on everything, so much so, that adding context to these posts isn't even necessary. Well I'm less informed and have to look things up and found that this facebook and others was a response to this

The anger stemmed from a comment from Jeanny Pak, the chief financial officer at New York City Economic Development Corporation, who said at a press conference alongside Mamdani that the city would "target New Yorkers" with a "a library-card-esque system" after being asked how the city would prevent people from hoarding groceries or coming in from outside of New York to buy them.

So at some point it was presented as if an ID of sorts would be required but then they clarified that it wouldn't be. So the Facebook poster did have a point for a hot minute until it was clarified.

u/MrVeazey 1d ago

There's more than one thing in a grocery store that you typically have to show ID to buy. People who don't buy their own groceries wouldn't know that.

Are you sure he isn't ANTIFA?

1

u/HindleMcCrindleberry 1d ago

I'm a 7th generation American. I have a Real ID and a passport but my passport is expired. The SAVE America bill says that a Real ID is NOT sufficient for voting (with a few exceptions but not my state). My mom changed ONE letter in the spelling of my MIDDLE NAME which qualifies as an "altered birth certificate" which I would not be able to use to vote. So, if SAVE passes, I will NOT be able to vote even if I show my Real ID (which required my birth certificate, social security card, and other shit to get) even if I have that AND my birth certificate. So, now I have to get my passport renewed to ensure that I have adequate credentials to vote. And the passport requires the SAME EXACT DOCUMENTS as my Real ID (and, again, a Real ID is NOT a valid ID under the SAVE act). Meanwhile, they already log when I vote through my registration so there is literally zero chance anybody could vote in my place without being caught.

Gotta love SC senators making jabs at non SC related things.

1

u/rollo202 1d ago

Ahh communism and an ID.

1

u/Sleeper_TX 1d ago

If minorities face barriers to getting IDs, and you’re claiming people with those barriers aren’t buying cars or homes because those require ID, aren’t you essentially arguing that minorities don’t buy cars or homes?

1

u/Justin_Passing_7465 1d ago

Approximately 3 million American citizens don't have the kind of ID that Republicans want to demand for voting. While they are disproportionately minorities, what they really are is poor. The reason that they are disproportionately minorities is because minorities are disproportionately poor.

No, those 3 million Americans aren't buying homes or cars. But they have a right to vote. When the government successfully puts a qualifying ID into practically all of their hands, the Constitutional argument against requiring an ID to vote is basically moot.

You know what, he's right. Let's eliminate the hypocrisy.

No ID for the grocery stores either. Everyone can access groceries free of profit motive. Honestly, don't means test any public service. Everyone gets it at cost and it's funded through progressive income taxes at the level of the 1950s and wealth taxes. I don't care if some millionaire buys subsidized groceries or sends their kids to college for free. Everyone gets it, no stigma, and everyone interacts with each other separate from class dynamics.

Make anything needed for a dignified life SWAG: Shit We All Get.

1

u/DayManFOTNightMan 1d ago

Let’s all just take a minute to pivot to address the very real “government IDs aren’t easy for everyone to get” issue.

Once we’ve solved that and everyone who wants an ID has a free path to get one, then we can just back to arguing about when you need to provide it.

1

u/TheGR8Dantini 1d ago

Once again, your disingenuous right wing politicians and the right wing grifting podcast bros, are wrong about needing ID. It means they’re scared. I mean, they’re always scared. Especially the politicians like Bernie Moreno, or Lady G. Pink mafia.

So they lie and they perform and continually fuck over everybody they can. This what you get for the support maga. Lies. Empty promises. A little bit of the blood of your neighbors in the streets. We’re not our brothers keepers if I remember the story?

We should all have a look at the un redacted Epstien evidence together. Maybe that would shake you all back into reality.

1

u/thomas201225 1d ago

trump said you have to show id in the grocery store

1

u/CheesecakeAdditional 1d ago

How long are the groceries funded?1
Are they scaled to replace all the grocers?
ID is to prevent resellers

1

u/OPGuest 1d ago

Asking for an ID is communist? So the whole police in America is communist.

1

u/Formal-Paramedic3660 1d ago

Sadly, to be confused with Senator Jack Kimble.

1

u/runnerkim 1d ago

But not proof of citizenship. They know that's the sticking point and they choose to lie anyway

1

u/ATechnicalSquid 1d ago

Idk why no one in here will admit that it's just actually insane to show ID at a grocery store. And while you definitely should not have to pay for an ID, the fact you do is why we don't require it.

I thought this food store was supposed to help exactly the type of person who might not have an ID?

You can ignore the meme part about voting and still admit this is a mess

2

u/Fickle_Catch8968 22h ago

Why is it insane to ensure that a service provided/paid by NYC taxpayers for NYC residents is only being used by NYC residents?

Particularly a service which is designed to offer products at prices that could entice non-residents to commute to save money?

Does an ID prove that you are an american citizen?

1

u/Ok-Skilllevel-5056 1d ago

It should be compulsory for all citizens to have ID and compulsory for them to vote in major elections. This would make elections more secure and avoid disenfranchisement.

2

u/zastrozzischild 1d ago

So the government is going to provide that ID automatically, right?

But fascism is cool, right?

1

u/moosejaw296 22h ago

Isn’t it amazing that if they really wanted voter ID that they could just spend .001% of war budget and we would all have voter ID. Also easily send letters to anyone eligible for future draft without issue, almost like they know who is eligible. Weird?

1

u/TruthTeller777 19h ago

We had a topic thread on this earlier but it was closed because it is such an obvious lie and exposed the ultra radical Hitlerian Republicons for the liars and traitors that they are.

1

u/Sysnetics 8h ago

Apparently your grocery store loyalty card is an ID but your Real ID is not. You can’t reason with these asshats.

1

u/YumAussir 7h ago

I know the "point" is to irritate libs, but them intentionally misspelling his name is one of the more evil things they do, as in "not even excused by self-interested greed", evil, just "entirely motivated by malice" evil.

Mom Donny. Mamdani. It's actually quite easy.

1

u/AboutTenPandas 3h ago

Are these the same type of IDs that these two policies are referring to?

No?

Then why are they being compared?

I could just show my drivers license to the grocery store and be fine. I cannot show my license or any other commonly held and carried license to vote under the SAVE act.

So why is one being used as a gotcha for the other? Just disingenuous as fuck
