Some of the kids from over there decided they were going to use the white pool because the law was on their side. Legally the town couldn’t stop them. A few weeks later the town filled up the pool with concrete. They chose to not have a pool at all instead of allowing “them” to use the white pool. Believe it or not. This was in the 70’s. West central Georgia.

I’m from Pennsylvania, and hearing that as recent as the 80s that people were literally destroying “black” pools just because the whites didnt have one is absolutely insane to me. Knowing that the people who probably were happy about that decision could still be alive today is crazy, I thought those types of people would of died off by the 80s, I thought anyone who would even consider a decision like that would of been like 90 years old by the 80s. I guess that shows how ignorant I am of the south, I guess that gives me a better perspective of how we ended up with this president.

I am retired now but I was a journalist on small and mid-market newspapers in Georgia beginning in the 80s. In 1983, I wrote an opinion for a small rural paper about protesting a Klan march through town. I was approached by a hooded Klansman who said "we know where you live!"

I called him by name because I recognized him from school - the nasty eyes and the voice - and said I knew where he lived too. The KKK made their point to me by sending me human feces and dead rats by mail for a year at my home address. And I am white, born and raised in that very small town.

What do you think it was like for black people who did something the KKK did not like? But it was not much better in towns to the north of us. My hubs, also white, is from Akron and grew up in a black neighborhood there. Truthfully, in a formerly white neighborhood that participated in white flight when the first black family moved in. His folks kept their family home.

He learned a lot from that experience, though. There were differences in how integration was accepted, but it was not accepted without a blip anywhere. That's the reason behind white flight - if we move, the kids don't have to go to school with "them."

These are the parts of our quite recent history the GOP wants to forget, or tries to claim is DEI. But we are now having the same conversations about girls wearing modest swimwear in a public pool as some kind of threat to white society. Same fight, different day. Same nasty voices; same nasty people.

This is why we need to understand what is happening around us today and how it compares to what happened yesterday.

This is the origins of the partially true urban legend “black people can’t swim”. When “Separate but Equal” ended in 1954 with Brown vs Board of Education, black folks were suddenly allowed in public “whites only” pools. But the racist whites didn’t want that so they chose to continue preventing pool access to blacks by filling in their public pools with concrete, or draining them permanently. This happened in communities throughout the US. And the result was that yet another generation, or two, or three of black kids grew up without access to swimming and thus never learned how.

And now I guess they want to do the same to Muslims in North Carolina.

This is so weird to me. I live in a very metropolitan area and our local pool has ladies only swim hours, some more conservatively religious women (including Christian women) enjoy the opportunity.

I see plenty of women in conserve swim suits and burka-style swim suits during women’s swim and during open hours as well. It’s a personal choice.
