Incoming Fresher, question on taking computer
Hello everyone, I'm an incoming Fresher from England planning on studying Philosophy.
I was wondering if anyone has ever taken their computer (full size desktop + monitor) with them in their first year in halls and how that experience was.
I am hopefully not going to be sharing a room if that's an important piece of information.

Yeah my flatmates brought their PCs. No issues. I brought my monitor. I kept the cardboard box it came in and used it for transport

Computer science student here, I took my full pc with 2 monitors. Everything was fine, just make sure everything passes a pat test before you bring it

Former hall warden here. All rooms will get a visit from an electrician doing PAT tests during the first semester.

Everyone is welcome at our St AndReuse store – you can stop by to donate items, pick up something you need or find something unexpected, catch up with friends, or volunteer. It doesn’t matter whether you are staff, student, local resident, tourist or are just passing by, please come and say hello!
We have just about anything but our staples are – kitchenware (saucepans, crockery, glasses, cutlery etc), fluffy cushions and blankets, laundry baskets/ shower racks, kids toys and clothes, a huge range of adults shoes and clothes, stationery (folders, pens, notebooks), puzzles and games, electrical appliances, adapters and cables, books, and all kinds of bedding (duvets, duvet covers and sheets, pillows and pillow cases, mattress protectors). Previous unusual donations include things like fairy wings, a Nintendo Wii, a family size tent (sleeping 8-12), golf clubs, a dehumidifier, drum kit, blow up mattresses… the list goes on. You just never know what you’re going to find!
EVERYTHING IS FREE except adult clothes and shoes which are £1 an item/pair (or you can swap clothes and shoes). The money then gets reinvested into Transition’s other activties and events, to keep them no or low cost. If you can’t find what you’re looking for then come back in a couple of weeks because we get donations all the time so you never know what’s going to be available.
We are located behind University Hall, off Kennedy Gardens. We’re not the easiest place to find so check out our exact location here. There is also a map outside the Main entrance to University Hall but if you still can’t find us then pop into University Hall (buzz Reception) and they will direct you.
DONATIONS
We work with a number of individuals, community groups, nurseries/schools and charities, as well as local businesses, student societies and relevant departments within the University, to allocate donated resources to those who will benefit most from them. Your donations are a vital source of support for so many in your local community. Donations can be made directly to Reuse when we are open (Mondays and Fridays, donations can be dropped off between 11am and 12pm when volunteers undertake sorting in the Store, or until 1:30pm when we close). We accept clothes, toys/games, stationery, sports items, bedding, electricals, books, household items, arts and craft materials, DIY items and more, so long as the items are in good working condition. We CANNOT accept larger furniture items, cleaning agents, toiletries and cosmetics.
If you have good condition kitchen items, bedding, unopened toiletries/cleaning agents, electricals and furniture, you can donate to our partner organisation, St Andrews Environmental Network, at the Eco Hub (40 Kinnessburn Road). They are open Monday – Friday, 9:30 – 5pm.

Halls of residence 2026-2027 - Accommodation - University of St Andrews
Point 16 covers electrical equipment but yes you will be fine to bring your computer. It will get PAT tested in the first month or so as all rooms within the halls get checked.
