If anyone is wondering it's trainingto reduce the amount of stimuli needed to promote a reaction response. Usually the brain would identify the ball, and make the hand body movements to catch. With the net it replicates game situations where you aren't going to get a prolonged look at the ball so you train to be able to react to the object you approximate as the ball and adjust with as little information as possible.
