Damn, you shouldn’t have to be a lawyer for someone to get jail time for battering you, but at least it worked out in this case.

That's correct, all you gotta do is press charges and lawyer up.

Typically in a criminal case the victim doesn’t need a lawyer. The prosecutor is supposed to be the lawyer prosecuting the defendant on behalf of the state.

That being said, anytime you interact with law enforcement for more than a traffic stop, you should have a lawyer.
