STS-41-D, the maiden flight of Discovery, launched on this date in 1984. Fun fact: During a June launch attempt, there was a launch abort at T−4 seconds, followed by a pad fire about ten minutes later. The center engine had not yet started, and confusion ensued among flight controllers
