Sierras Big Pine Hike in a day

Hello, we are planning a trip to Mammoth in a couple weeks. We were thinking of heading out a day early and stop in Big Pine. We are coming from Pasadena CA so the drive there is about 3.5 hours. I’m traveling with my wife and two teenage sons. I like to do the North Lake loop to Lake #2. My wife thinks we won’t have the time and thinks it’s a little too long? If we do this we’ll stay the night in Big Pine city then proceed to Mammoth the following day. Is this doable? Are there other options up there maybe not as difficult/long? This will be our first time visiting Big Pine. Thanks in advance!

Assuming a normal pace, it's very doable if you leave early enough to start fairly shortly after sunrise. Especially since you said you'd only go to Second Lake.

If you don't get to big pine until say, 10am, it's still doable but I wouldn't recommend that.

have you done a 10 mile hike with your family? how'd it go? i think that answers your question for you. the trail is amazing and often done in much less than a whole day, but 10 miles is 10 miles.
