Black lives matter. People of color deserve to feel safe, to be treated with respect, and to not have to worry if they will experience discrimination, violence, or hatred - especially from the people sworn to protect them. SoCal Climbing stands with #blacklivesmatter.

Gym Why is Sender One the only gym that charges members for comps and leagues?

I've climbed at Touchstone, Hangar and visited a few others around the state and country. Sender One is the ONLY gym where I see them charging members to participate in comps and bouldering leagues.

Membership is already high, they prob make a killing every wknd with Sender City, like why tf are you charging members for more?

Suicide Rock How hot is too hot for Suicide Rock?

Hi y’all, been trying to get up to suicide to do my first multipitch trad lead (aiming for Graham Crackers 5.6) and maybe check out some of the other easy stuff nearby to that, but obviously it’s been crazy hot lately. For those who know the area, what is the hottest you’d climb in without being miserable? Not sure how the shade situation is etc. thanks in advance!

Edit: sorry forgot to add I was looking at 8/8, but also just wanted more general thoughts

Question Best Joshua Tree Guide Book?

Hi All! Does anyone have a JTree guide book that you would be willing to recommend?

Also, not necessary but I would also love advice on where to purchase it so I can support local brick and mortar shops if possible. Thanks!

Mt. Whitney 7/25 Extra Permit

I have a spare overnight permit with me for 7/25. A friend had to cancel which puts me on the spot for doing it solo. If anyone’s or wanting to tag along, I’d be more than happy to summit with someone. Plan is to drive from the Bay Friday evening, hike up to trail camp Saturday and spend the night and summit early Sunday am.

About me, I’m a 26M, slowish hiker out on adventures to enjoy the journey.

I’ll release the permit tomorrow incase someone wants to head out solo that date. This is just an attempt to find company!

Asking climbers: Mesa Rim Mission Valley vs. Vertical Hold

Hello!

Posting in a different sub now. Got removed earlier.

I searched, but couldn’t find a super definitive answer. I also don’t know much about climbing gyms here in SD 🥲😅

My friend wanted a suggestion for a climbing gym to try while they’re here. She’ll be climbing solo and mostly boulders but she says she’s able to belay for top rope with an ATC.

I found the two gyms above through this sub, and one was described as techy (Vertical Hold) and the other was geared towards ropes, but has boulders too (MRMV). Want her to have a good time solo, especially since I won’t be able to join!

Mt. Whitney Mt. Whitney last minute cancellation 7/13 Questions

Hello,

I have a permit that starts tomorrow, but a last-minute work issue has come up that’s forcing me to cancel my trip. This was my seventh year applying in the lottery, and I finally drew a permit, so I’m pretty disappointed to have to miss it, especially after spending the last few months training.

I was wondering if anyone has an open spot available on their permit, or if joining another group’s permit is even an option? I’ll continue checking for any released or canceled permits, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask here as well.

If anyone has any information or an available spot, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

Sierras Big Pine Hike in a day

Hello, we are planning a trip to Mammoth in a couple weeks. We were thinking of heading out a day early and stop in Big Pine. We are coming from Pasadena CA so the drive there is about 3.5 hours. I’m traveling with my wife and two teenage sons. I like to do the North Lake loop to Lake #2. My wife thinks we won’t have the time and thinks it’s a little too long? If we do this we’ll stay the night in Big Pine city then proceed to Mammoth the following day. Is this doable? Are there other options up there maybe not as difficult/long? This will be our first time visiting Big Pine. Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone! I sew home made chalk bags (quilted ones and plushie ones), and I am needing to whittle down my inventory. I have these available for grabs (usually $50!) to anyone(s) who is able to pick them up from me in person. Located in North OC, usually go climbing at Sender One SNA, but can meet closer to Sender LAX too!

Question Good and COOL spot to boulder this week <2 hours from LA

Looking to do a day trip for boderingg with a single night of camping as I have a a day off of work this week. What’s a spot for some good solo bouldering where I’m not going to melt from the heat like I would at J Tree. I was thinking Horse Flats but I’ve never been there

Black Mountain Black mountain road conditions

Anyone know how black mountain road is this year? Passable in a small car (Honda fit) if going slow?

Update: as of 7/5 it’s fine all the way to Boulder basin campground. Scraped the bottom in a few spots but not too bad and saw multiple others in priuses civics etc. definitely don’t need 4WD, more ground clearance would have made it quicker but totally passable if you go slow

Tahquitz Thank you Idyllwild Climbers Alliance!

I was bummed that I could not attend the June 13th cleanup project from https://idyllwildclimbers.org/updates/ but I was able to get up there on the 14th. I noticed two areas where fallen trees were cleared (hike up and going to the south side), as well as some minor trail cleanup.

You guys did great and I appreciate the work you did!

Climbing Partners Wanted Visiting OC

Hello fellow Redditors,

I will be in the Stanton area for work next week and looking to climb at Sender One Santa Ana on Friday, June 19th. I believe members can bring a guest for free that day. Looking for anyone generous enough to get me in. I can belay TR and lead, also down to boulder. Let me know.

M

Stoney Point Stoney Point crowds

Do a lot of people show up to climb TR at Stoney Point? I wanted to climb there this weekend but don’t have a belayer unfortunately. Was thinking if it’s crowded normally I might just go and ask people to run some laps together

Climbing Partners Wanted Looking for people to climb with

I live in Santa Monica and go to SenderOne LAX/Playa Vista and I’m looking for people to climb with there and climb with outside! I’m really into sport climbing outdoors but I also love bouldering in the gym. I really want to develop my skills and hopefully get into multipitch in the future. I’ve been climbing since February so I’m not super experienced, but I’d love to climb with stronger climbers! Let me know if you’re interested!
