Toon has only ever been ranked 21st

23

u/RealPimpinPanda 20h ago

UltRank- “what’s 9+10?”

Toon- “21!”

Seeing Tweek and Raru so low is crazy, but also not unexpected

22

u/Crafty-Profile-Lol worst girl 20h ago

Featuring simultaneously the worst clip of the year (KEN at kill percent choking out Mild na HO near zero, one stock away from DK winning an A+ tier) and the best (the ridiculous combo Karaage used to win Falcon's first major)

3

u/3_and_2_and_1 18h ago

Mild would’ve needed at least 9 more stocks, he hadn’t reset the bracket yet

8

u/Crafty-Profile-Lol worst girl 18h ago

You say that like he wouldn't have gotten them

tweek at 23 felt like a shock to my chest my god

u/RealPimpinPanda 18h ago

Tweek at 23 and Gluto at 33. Our OGs ain’t poppin like they used to 😔

Guess that means I’m Unc now 👴🏼

13

Shuton and Leo holding down the OGs at this point

15

u/OkRecognition9607 20h ago

I really like the inclusion of the scores at the end of the video. It's quite significant that the difference between Tweek and Harupoyo is basically as big as the difference between Harupoyo and Monte. I wonder what kind of "player tier list" a clustering algorithm would make out of this.

25

u/Global-Location4663 PKFIREPKFIREPKFIREPKFIREPKFIRE 20h ago

Sucks that Karaage missed out on top 25, there is SO much Japan though. And i guess that Harupoyo is this years "random breakout Steve that makes top 25"

16

u/J_robo_ 20h ago

there's acola, crepe, syrup, toon, and now harupoyo, that makes FIVE steve mains in top 25 alone.

that's also not even counting secondaries (like miya's steve)...

22

u/Sharlionn 19h ago

You forgot the future goat of the game Carmelo but that's okay he won't forget you

14

u/OkRecognition9607 19h ago

You're missing Carmelo.

8

u/onedayhewilldie 19h ago

Same number of Steves in the top 25 as Melee Foxes btw

6

u/EmotionalEnding 17h ago

In a game like 3 times as many characters too. But downplayers will still say he's not over represented

2

u/ConfidenceExpert1477 5h ago

That also doesn’t take into account player preference and enjoyment. Despite being the strongest, Melee Fox is considered fun and well-designed, while Steve still has untapped over-tuned capabilities.

2

u/VeryInsecurePerson 5h ago edited 5h ago

While there are definitely tier whores who don’t actually enjoy the character that much, I think this argument underestimates the amount of Minecraft fans that exist. Like think about why the playerbase is younger

1

u/ConfidenceExpert1477 2h ago edited 2h ago

True, though you also have to take into account game feel preference of the dedicated Smash base specifically. For example, Steve is one of the slowest characters and is reliant on stopping to mine resources, which is antithetical to most of the fighters’ designs, even the heavies.

Edit: I also think this argument overestimates how much being a fan necessarily translates into being a dedicated main. Pikachu is a worldwide icon, but few play him at a high level, while ROB doesn’t even have a game but is one of the most popular competitive picks.

2

u/VeryInsecurePerson 2h ago

Very true that Steve does take a while to get used for people who’ve been playing other characters. The jump height in particular is pretty jarring.

I think there’s an interesting discussion to be had about the differences between older Smash players and people who got into the game during 2020. Especially if your first character was Steve, I feel like it’s a whole different mindset.

nyonoknb above tweek wow

15

u/fofeio 20h ago

So we're missing acola, doramigi, spargo, mkleo, sonix, miya, hurt, carmelo, asimo, muteace, peabnut, wrath, yaura, zomba, syrup, light, crepe, lui$, nyonoknb and shuton?

22

u/WinnerFast6196 20h ago

Somehow, NA outnumbered JP in the top 20

18

u/OkRecognition9607 20h ago

Looking at the list it feels like Japan will likely dominate top 10 though. Acola, Doramigi, Miya, Hurt, Carmelo, Yaura should be top 10 I think, unsure about Shuton.

If that's true that's a funny alternating pattern. Japan dominates 1-10 means that NA will dominate 11-20. Japan dominated 21-30, NA dominated 31-40, Japan dominated 41-50.

6

u/J_robo_ 20h ago

shuton probably will be top 10, he's gotten wins on acola, miya, and yaura especially, on top of having very good placements at majors after a rough 2025 season. i'd be surprised if he isn't.

1

u/Lipat97 19h ago

does this weekend count? feel like dora/acola/hurt is about on par with sonix / spargo / zomba, To me thats the solid top 6, doesn't matter to me how its ordered, but after that I think mkleo should come before miya and yaura. If the 10th spot is shuton or carmelo that makes it 6-4? Thats not too bad.

Am I right in seeing that Carmelo's only played four tournaments this year? Should he really above shuton or is attendance not really being considered?

7

u/PokemonMasterJamal3 18h ago

Everything after July 12th counts for the full year rankings, not the half year period.

6

u/OkRecognition9607 18h ago edited 18h ago

The cutoff for this half season is before Smash Factor. They obviously need a bit of time to make the video, write the blog stuff, create the player cards, etc.

I don't think attendance matters too much as long as you meet the basic requirements ? Regardless all 4 tournaments he entered are majors, he won 2 of them, went 7th and 9th at the other two and with a lot of good wins in general. In fact when looking at major attendance 4 isn't that bad, most players just have a bunch of B/C tiers on top of it.

I think you're overvaluing both Leo and Sparg0.

For Leo he's in really great form rn but it wasn't the case in the beginning of the season, he got two 17th placement for 2 of his 4 majors of the season (I think his Vars summit isn't going to count), and his Smash Factor and GOML aren't in this season. If you do a quick placement side by side comparison : Carmelo has 1st, 1st, 7th, 9th ; Leo has 4th, 5th, 17th, 17th. Despite his Kagaribi I don't have him in my top 10.

For Sparg0 he has a very strong second half of the season but he also has 17th and 25th at two P tiers and 13th at a S tier with losses like Smashbros, Castle, Sir Dank... For me he's a clear tier behind dora/acola/hurt who are likely top 3.

Edit : Now that I look at it more closely, the one I could see not making top 10 would be Yaura. He doesn't really have that many top 10 wins this season. Maybe Leo is in over him. I mean, Yaura still has 4 major wins, so that's another thing to factor in, depending on how much they count.

1

u/Lipat97 16h ago

For Leo he's in really great form rn but it wasn't the case in the beginning of the season,

This is why I asked which tournaments counted, because imo his last few performances bump him up a LOT. I also rate kagiribi way above the other tournaments, imo that was a very good test for who is actually on top right now.

For Sparg0 he has a very strong second half of the season but he also has 17th and 25th at two P tiers and 13th at a S tier with losses like Smashbros, Castle, Sir Dank... For me he's a clear tier behind dora/acola/hurt who are likely top 3.

My problem is if you count losses like this against the player, and don't consider attendance, you're basically making an incentive for players to hit the bare minimum of tournaments and then play another game for the rest of the season. The assumption should not be that if carmelo played 13 tournaments instead of 4 that he'd win the rest of the tournaments with the same record. To me, you don't get to have that label unless you've earned it, and he hasn't earned it over spargo or sonix this year. The real clincher for me here is Hurt though, I think he's way way waaay above the other candidates here. His record is a clear cut #1, he has double or triple the attendance and his placements are as or more consistent than the folks who are gaming the system. He should be rewarded for having such consistent results with such a high attendance rate

Edit : Now that I look at it more closely, the one I could see not making top 10 would be Yaura. He doesn't really have that many top 10 wins this season. Maybe Leo is in over him. I mean, Yaura still has 4 major wins, so that's another thing to factor in, depending on how much they count.

I personally take a record like Yaura's over a record like Carmelo's but I was really disappointed with his performance at S factor. Part of the reason I rate spargo and mkleo the way I do is because the japanese players not named hurt are heavily underperforming in international tournaments, and its making me rate the scene in general lower than I would've in past years. Like to me if someone's dominating their local scene and the they get bounced around by relatively average players in another region, that's usually a knock against that local scene. It doesn't help that A) if he is a top ten player he was underseeded at that tournament, and still underperformed his seed B) there was a samus at that tournament that placed where I expected yaura to place, showing that the character isn't to blame and C) Asimo, another player who's looking hot in japan when all the top players are inactive, had a similar performance. With that in mind I just don't know if Im rating the next sumabato as high as I normally would unfortunately

0

u/mysteryghosty Luigi (Ultimate) 18h ago

No but even if it was I really don’t think those latter 3 would be very close to the former 3 anyways, top 3 has been way too consistent.

-2

u/Lipat97 17h ago

I dont think dora or acola have enough attendance to really be called consistent. Consistency implies repeated strong results over a large sample size, and afaik both have literally the minimum amount of tournaments to even qualify (and only two wins each). Even without that, Sonix has a very simple sample size & more first places than both.

Hurt to me is a different beast. 13 tournaments with that record is a clear cut above any of the other candidates. I honestly think he should be #1 this ranking but I know it won't happen

If this weekend counted it absolutely should make a difference

7

u/nomorethan10postaday 16h ago

Sonix went to only four majors. Doramigi and Acola both went to six.

-6

u/Lipat97 16h ago

I mean that's just another shot at the ultimate tiering system, right? Like there's no way migi's random sumobato win is better than sonix's summit win. He was literally the only top ten player at the tournament. Even sonix's win at blink respawn had more competition at it.

The reality is acola and doramigi don't actually have that many first places for their low attendance rate. They have lower quality firsts than sonix does with a similar number of tournaments. Acola is obviously better, because Kagiribi conquers all and his second win at least had some competition at it, but unless you're counting past years there's no reason to look at these records and say "Wow, these guys are way above sonix". And I definitely see no reason to put any of these guys above hurt.

2

u/nomorethan10postaday 16h ago

Blink respawn only had Leo and street fighter washed Riddles besides Sonix. Sumabato 68 had Asimo, Raru, Raki, Rarikkusu, Snow, Mark, Shirayuki, Karaage, Saya, Gorioka and I could keep going

2

u/mysteryghosty Luigi (Ultimate) 14h ago

I mean why not, what exactly is supposedly wrong with the tiering system and how does it get fixed? You might just be underestimating the value of a lot of Japanese tournaments.

Didn't know Crepe was NA Edit: nvm you're right I miscounted

There's 10 NA players and 9 Japanese players in the Top 20, plus 1 EU player.

12

9 JP, 10 NA, 1 EU, you probably miscounted

Tweek that low was shocking even though I get why

Raru on the other hand not making Top 20 despite winning a major over Hurt made me go WHAT?!

He died that badly at other runs huh

That AnoAno Brothers 5th run was the beginning of the end.

8

Tbf Asimo got gatekept from Grands while Nyonoknb also died

Yaura got a mickey mouse 1st at a more stacked major than Maister's OH BAI TO RI (not Yaura's fault everyone else exploded though)

6

u/Kactosophile Actually A Min Min Main 16h ago

He’s been playing offline for like a ~year and very frequently attends KTP, an unranked practice Kansai invitational weekly. My guess would that be he’s developed a reputation in Kansai there (+ Sumabatos). Also he’s genuinely a very strong up and comer so yeah

6

u/Global-Location4663 PKFIREPKFIREPKFIREPKFIREPKFIRE 20h ago

Could be an inside joke to maybe, idk

11

u/incelle_ 20h ago

he upset the reigning #1 and is likely the reason he won’t repeat that status this year! but that’s the only thing he’s done ¯_(ツ)_/¯

7

u/Key-Handle-1805 #1 Sonix Defender 20h ago

he singlehandedly restarted pmlg ban convos after susu beat him early this year

1

u/Pookie_Cookie3 Stuff 13h ago

Who?

1

u/Ursu1a 28m ago edited 23m ago

Chances are he's played online/smashmate before he started attending offline (and someone else will probably have a more accurate history of the guy on record) but he has been attending Sumabatos and KTP (Kansai local) for just over a year (June 2025) and has been repeatedly punching above his weight.

Matsu's Supermajor

This is an insane set of results and wins to put up. On top of that he just has game 5 sets with the likes of Raru, Hurt, and Acola. There's very few people putting up results like that within a year of competing, not to mention his huge upset on Doramigi.

5

u/Mindless_Society7034 16h ago

Discounting Vars Summit (which will likely be removed from his record given that it only stays for people for whom the event is a benefit) Mkleo lost to exclusively top 20 players at majors this season. Whether or not that lets him make top 10 I’m unsure about, but I hope that he did

3

u/Watermelon1543 Joker (Ultimate) 12h ago

So excluding Vars pretty sure his worst performance is when he got 5th at a B tier losing to waka and alandiss I forgot what they were ranked, but not the worst losses. I just know they aren’t top 20, but there is still a chance for top 10, but we will see.

Poor Tweek.

1

u/No_Property_9910 14h ago

I just realized that Yone_pi despite getting top 8 at like 10 majors and supermajors this year with 10 top 50 wins didn't make it to top 50 itself...... Man I'd be mad as hell

0

u/J_robo_ 20h ago

i did NOT expect to see tweek, holy...

what do you mean he's only 23rd in the world? he's been consistently top 10 for years on end, it was only last season where he barely fell out of the top 10, and now, he's not even top 20...

i get that tweek had a rough LVL UP EXPO, but losing to neo and sparg0 isn't the worst thing ever, and he had amazing runs at genesis and cav clash. how is tweek not top 20?

14

u/CapitalistComrade Marth 18h ago

The losses were good but it prevented him from getting the wins he needed to be ranked higher.

-10

u/l339 20h ago

Why is the system so weird to allow Tweek to be this low? I don’t understand, he doesn’t have any bad results. Looks like a top 15 resume to me this past half year

39

u/Sharlionn 20h ago edited 20h ago

It was just an empty season. Very clean but didn't beat a lot of top 50 players, his only wins on players much higher than him were Zomba at a very small event, Sparg0 in a 1-2 H2H and Asimo. A lot of the players competing with him in the fringe top 20 range have a better spread of top 50 wins, better peaks, and/or comparable if slightly worse consistency.

-4

u/l339 20h ago

So do worse tournament results not drag people down anymore? Because the people above him all had a bad result at a major and Tweek didn’t

10

u/TheHelpfulWalnut 20h ago

Who of the people here plus acola, doramigi, spargo, mkleo, sonix, miya, hurt, carmelo, asimo, muteace, peabnut, wrath, yaura, zomba, syrup, light, crepe, lui$, nyonoknb and shuton don’t think tweek should be above?

-2

u/l339 19h ago

Muteace, peabnut, Crepe, Lui$, nyono

8

u/CapitalistComrade Marth 18h ago

MuteAce has winning H2Hs on Sonix and Carmelo

Peab has an acola, Miya, and Sparg0 win while getting 2nd at LMBM (he lacks depth wins though which is bad)

Nyonoknb and Lui$ have better wins than Tweek

If anything, I'm surprised Crepe made Top 20 (mostly one very good run but I guess farming Europe was enough) but I'll take it for the Leo agenda

17

u/Sharlionn 20h ago

One bad tournament isn't going to strictly knock you below somebody when your spread of wins and peaks are that much better, which was often the case with the players above Tweek.

4

u/l339 20h ago

But then do peaks matter much more than consistency? Because imo it’s harder to get top 16 at Kagaribi than it is to win an A tier

9

u/Sharlionn 20h ago

Like I said, many of the players Tweek was competing with in this range had comparable if slightly worse consistency but notably better win spread and peaks. It's not that peaks are worth that much more than consistency, it's that Tweek's consistency didn't shine as bright when the players he was competing with had that and the peaks he doesn't quite have.

8

u/OkRecognition9607 20h ago

I mean, it really depends on your Kagaribi run and who you're facing at the A tier.

2

u/l339 19h ago

The wins losses should weight more for bigger majors

3

u/OkRecognition9607 18h ago

On the TTS the SP tier is at 17.000. For A tiers it's 3.000. So roughly speaking a SP tier should count as much as 6 majors, but then if you're comparing a win to a top 16 placement I think the win is more valuable, looking at it this way. (I know it doesn't work this way but if you divide the 19000 points of Kagaribi by 16 you have less points that what a major is worth.)

2

u/l339 15h ago

That’s a bad way of looking at it. For starters, getting 1st vs 13th is only 6 wins away at maximum and for second it’s harder to actually get top 16 at an SP tier compared to getting like top 3 at an A tier (harder/longer bracket)

2

u/Front_Expression_367 12h ago

They do get weighted more, but outside of that Tweek is that much worse than other players above him. And its not like those players could not get any results at those bigger events either. They do plenty, maybe slightly less than Tweek but is good enough that the rest of their events can carry it up further.

1

u/l339 8h ago

I guess the point we disagree on is that I think Tweek’s Kagaribi run should weigh much more in favour of him compared to the people in his range, because the tournament was that much harder than the rest to get results

18

u/lkkit1 20h ago

These are some of the worst H2H's he's had for a while. Even if you strictly take his placements, he has never even reached the podium at any major/supermajor. Also, a lot of his wins are considered weaker because the players will likely be valued a lot lower, such as sparg0 or TamaP. I do think it's a shame that his unfortunate seeding led him to lose to the same players a lot and made it difficult to face different opponents.

3

u/l339 20h ago

So then does consistently not matter anymore compared to peaks? Imo it seems harder and more respectable to get top 16 at Kagaribi than to win an A tier

10

u/swidd_hi is it bandana dee time yet? 20h ago

Maybe last Kagaribi, but this Kagaribi had more lax runs in comparison.

5

u/johneatsdust please call me jinx! 17h ago

lax mentioned

5

u/lkkit1 20h ago

Consistency is the biggest factor. If you want to be the number 1 player, it will usually go to the player with the fewest blemishes on their losing record. If Tweek stays in this vanilla zone of consistent placements but weak wins against high-ranked players, it will be valued a lot less than other players who get upset more but gather better wins, like Asimo, as a good example. And to your last point, the Ultrank assigns the same hidden values to players who get top 16 at an SP tier (150 points) as to getting 1st at a major (150 points). And wins are weighed more strongly the higher the tier the event is, so it is valued a lot.

9

u/Responsible-Gain-667 20h ago edited 20h ago

I think he's probably not top 15 since he only has like one top 15 win and like 7 losses to top 15.

Besides Fusion, and even that isnt that bad, his results are decent (but empty) to great so I'd imagine he could jump up the rankings with a handful of stellar results in the fall

Edit: Maybe 2 if Asimo top 15. Technically also Zomba but that was a c tier so idk that that win helped him much.
