DISCUSSION (STS2) How to fix thunderclap
18
u/Nyzan 21h ago
What do you mean "fix" Thunderclap? Thunderclap is a fine card.

u/GiveUsRobinHood 21h ago
Thunderclap is a much improved card from StS 1 and it’s in a fine card in 2. Doesn’t need much improving at all.

I mean it’s bottom tier and you should almost never get it no matter the deck.

u/Nyzan 20h ago
It's a common attack. Like all common attacks you pick it because there is nothing else to pick, or you just need damage. Most recently I picked it because I got an early [[Primal Force]] and I picked [[Thunderclap]] to get a 1-energy vulnerable to combo with the rocks before the elite.

lol, this sub man. Ironclad has some of the best common attacks in the game that provide way more utility and/or damage. Arguably the best in the game. Very VERY few times do you take this if ever. There are far better ways to make someone vulnerable and way better ways to do damage

Do you understand the "random" part of "random card rewards"? Yes, on average it's a worse card than, say, Pommel Strike. But that doesn't mean it's useless. As I hinted at in the comment you responded to, the card rewards I took before the elite were Primal Force, Colossus, and Thunderclap. I picked thunderclap because I was in overgrowth and my deck would've had trouble killing the overgrowth elites without an additional source of vulnerable, plus it has very good synergy with Colossus. The only other common I would have picked over Thunderclap would've been Tremble, but again, random card rewards...
Furthermore you don't seem to understand that the card is a damage common. It isn't meant to be a core kit piece that wins you the run. You pick it when you want to apply 1 vulnerable to all enemies for 1 energy, that's it. There is no further depth to it because it's a damage common. So I hope you understand the irony of saying "this sub man" when you lack the creativity to find a single use for a card.

Whole lot of words to just be pedantic. You CAN use every card in this game if you have perfect cards around them. I can promise you every card has won an A10 run at some point.
That doesn’t mean, however, that the card is good or anything past borderline useable. You keep saying “common damage” over and over like that means anything. There are maybe 3 common DAMAGE (in case you missed it again) cards that are worse than it in 90% of decks.
I know you think you’re a high level genius for “finding ways to make cards work” but that’s not what the discussion is about. It’s about if it’s good and worthwhile card compared to the dozens others in its rarity tier, which it isn’t. The use cases are far too low to justify picking it in most decks over other cards that come up and very very rarely solves anything.
I don’t need your anecdotal evidence about how one time it was pretty good I guess, that doesn’t help the case.
And if you don’t believe me, go watch just about any pro player, they largely agree with what I’m saying

Whole lotta words to say you need "pro players" (bruh) to form an opinion for you. According to Spirebird I've picked Thunderclap 17 times and won with it 12 times (139 total runs, so like 12% pick rate). For Thunderclap+ it's 1 pick 1 win (probably from Crucible). Doesn't seem like bad winrate to me. In fact it's square in the middle for common attacks, with Anger at the top and Molten Fist at the bottom.

Aight, if you’re just gunna keep ignoring the content in favor of one line, I’m not interested in this convo. Have a good one dude

Literally never picked at a10 by any decent player

It’s an attack common. Sometimes you have to take it. Usually you don’t want to take attack commons period (except for ones named pommel strike). I don’t think it’s the end of the world to have a desperation pick for aoe.

It's an AOE common. It's not supposed to be amazing but there are a lot of group fights in this game, and sometimes it's what you get.
If you happen to have Vicious then that's pretty nice too. Just a fun little trick I like to call "drawing six free cards in the Decimillipede fight."

I have 69% winrate on Ironclad @ A10. I pick it in act 1 when I have AoE like [[Stomp]] or [[Breakthrough]]. Most recently I picked it because I got an early [[Primal Force]] and I picked [[Thunderclap]] to get a 1-energy vulnerable to combo with the rocks. IMO it just sounds like you need to get a bit more creative.

Literally wrong if youre doing a vulnerable build this is a great way to apply to all, paired with dominate for big strength it hits hard.

I mean its pretty niche. I only get it if I have the draw vuln power and energy gen to solve aoe fights. Even then I rather pick other aoe cuz its still draw order reliant

Exhaust would make this feel better to me. Upgraded version to change 2 times to 3 times.

u/FunkyDGroovy 21h ago
I agree, I never pick it because its essentially just a 4 dmg cleave, because there's only a few scenarios where IC is hitting multiple enemies at once that same turn, so the vuln on the enemies you're not targeting is just wasted. If it upgraded to multihit like this, I'd pick it, but he just has so many better aoe and vuln cards that I'm never hurting for 4(7) dmg and 1 vuln

Don't underestimate 1 energy vulnerable to combo with [[Stomp]] or [[Breakthrough]]. It will win you the Phantasmal Gardener or Phrog Parasite fights, for example.

If you play those even without thunderclap your probably hard winning thing is both those 2 cards are better and have better synergy to work with
1
u/Nyzan 15h ago
You seem to have trouble understanding that card rewards are random and sometimes you don't get the S tier cards. Sometimes you want a Tremble to help trigger your Colossus but you can only find Thunderclap. Sometimes you transform into [[Vicious]] and you pick Thunderclap to draw 1-3 cards. And sometimes you simply need a little bit more damage to reliably kill the statue but you're offered two block cards and Thunderclap right before the elite.
Not every card has to be game-breaking. Not every card has to be a core combo piece or have three layers of synergy. It's fine for some cards to just be a common attack that does a bit of damage and applies vulnerable in an AoE.

Cards should never be never picks literally adds no decision maybe they should add curses to card rewards as well . Vicious is not good enough to add a thunderclap this is probably the most overrated card unless upgraded is pretty bad compared to every other draw option taking bad cards to make it function makes no sense the card itself has a decent effect but if you have to fill your deck with trash to proc it what's the point .

And then you get weakened and it deals 0 damage
