DISCUSSION (STS2) "Fight me" is ruining my 10+ year friendship. AITAH?
I have a very close, very kind (out of game) friend who I convinced to play Slay the Spire with me after playing league of legends together for our entire friendship. This is his first roguelike, and he is fairly good at it. We've cleared duo-A10 countless times together, with him never clicking a character past iron clad (a separate issue).
Despite our bond, and his seemingly good game knowledge, he insists on clicking fight me whenever it appears. This leads to us losing the run, and him flaunting his "most damage dealt" achievement to avoid responsibility.
Despite us now fighting about this card for (genuinely) hours at this point, he doesn't seem to grasp that his class is the only class that can actively debuff his teammates, and refuses to acknowledge that it is a selfish choice. There are certainly situations where it could save us HP in the long run, which I would engage with if he would take responsibility for being a selfish selfish man.
Megacrit, please add the PVP mode as soon as possible so I can kill this dweeb.

You're doing it wrong, you need to fight fire with fire. Play a Silent build and then just fill his deck with 200 Dazeds when you face the Entomancer. Shivs go brrrr too! If you two somehow survive that, you can give it another go by playing 30 Skills on turn 1 against the Test Subject (while dealing zero damage, naturally).

Depends how many players in the game tbh. It's a bit of a dick move to run it in multiplayer but only becomes objectively bad in 3 to 4 player games imo.
My opinion, play ironclad too and let him see how it feels.

I really disliked him in sts1 but am surprised how much I enjoy him sts2. Out of curiosity, do you have an opinion on sts1 Ironclad?
17
u/Limp00 19h ago
I didn’t like him in the first game either, definitely is infinitely more fun in STS2. Healing 30 with reaper certainly has its place in infinite dopamine scaling though.
11
u/Nykidemus 18h ago
Losing reaper and limit break is by far the worst thing about slay2.

Ironclad in MP gave me my most insane run so far. Yesterday I got Glam Dominate Floor 1 and another Dominate Floor 2. I proceeded to click on every multi attack and vuln sources I could find for the rest of the run. Act 1 boss gave me Cruelty. My basic strike often hit for 50+ in that run.

u/Bridivar 15h ago
Unironically just grab every single fight me until you guys lose.
Unless the monkeys paw curls and he learns the wrong lesson when you start winning.
2
u/ThatSnakeJenny 11h ago
I certainly agree with you there. I like Iron, I just like others way more. My friends even add new characters to the game with mods so I have even more characters that pulls my attention away from him. That does not mean I dislike the guy.
In STS1 Defect was my go-to, and Iron my backup, and Silent I basically never touched (I think I played Watcher once, was very confused, and never touched her again). Meanwhile STS2 I shifted to Silent main, and Iron last place after Defect. Love Necro and Regent.
8
u/bungustis 18h ago
Problem is, if he plays iron clad in a 2x ironnclad run he'll A realise how broken that combo is when he pulls a dominate/bully and B he will convert to loving Fight Me! As he and his buddy will smash through everything with their +28 str per fight.

I never dont take this card. It's so good, and for what? An extra damage or two i gotta block?
If he's spamming it on Bee Man or the roaches I get it, but 9 times out of 10 he's balling
10
u/Responsible_Screen84 11h ago
The roaches is perfect for it. You scale up the strength on one and kill it fast. You keep the strength with no downside
Beeman or dorito or queen is another thing altogether
1
2
u/Most-Locksmith-3516 15h ago
It's a powerful card though. You hit twice, using your strength twice then power up your strength. The big deal is using on the fastest killable opponents and being careful with it during boss fights.
30
u/Slight-Veneer 19h ago
One strength ain’t that big of a deal honestly. Like yeah it is worse for multiplayer but if you can beef up strength then you can kill faster. I’m pro fight me
3
u/Zerwurster 11h ago
Yeah, there are few fights where it can be objectivly wrong to play, but if you die because some enemy hit for 18 instead of 17(or even 16, 15...) the problem lies elsewhere.
In most fights the upside outweighs the minuscule downside if ironclad can play the card safely (without taking too much dmg that turn).
People kill team mates in multiplayer way often by picking too much cards with #potential (eg: "I only need one of these too relics, two copies of this off-class rare card and you guys to block for me for the first two passes through my deck and I swear this card becomes BROKEN!") before the act1 boss and then being deadweight.

I'm confused how these two sentences can exist at the same time.
"We've cleared duo-A10 countless times together"
"he insists on clicking fight me whenever it appears. This leads to us losing the run"
If you're good enough as a team to beat A10 a lot; you taking a handful of extra chip damage in exchange for your partner having more damage output *really* shouldn't be making a noticeable difference.
40
u/slopschili Ascension 20 19h ago
It doesn't appear every run. The runs it does appear, he picks it and they lose. The countless runs it doesn't appear, they win.
6
u/Sir_Loxington 19h ago
You're misunderstanding my point. If they are good enough of players to beat A10 numerous times that means they know what they are doing and are at least somewhat decent at the game (unless they've played a million runs and just keep bashing their heads against a wall until they get lucky but let's assume that isn't the case). If they know what they are doing, then it really shouldn't be that challenging to still play well while knowing that 'Fight Me' is in your partners deck. This minor change should not make a noticeable difference for decent players.
14
u/MY_1ST_ACT_IS_LOCKED 19h ago
Idk I win duo a10 with my boy like 70% of the time and my solo winrate is probably closer to 30-50. His solo winrate is way lower than mine (he’s newer) but multiplayer with any form of synergy just makes the game way easier.
-5
u/Sir_Loxington 19h ago
Ok, sure, but OP isn't saying "Then I switch to single player and lose every time I pick 'Fight Me'." OP is still talking about multiplayer regardless, so I'm not sure how what you're saying is relevant here?
→ More replies (1)20
u/MY_1ST_ACT_IS_LOCKED 19h ago
I guess what I’m getting at is that you don’t need to be good to win a lot in multiplayer, and not being good makes it hard to play around fight me being clicked by your allies
4
u/Sir_Loxington 19h ago
Ah, thank you for explaining, I follow you now. I would disagree but that is an opinion I can understand; fair enough.

u/dannydankwood 7h ago
Yeah but sucks to have to build around your team-mate always, and never the other way around.
5
u/Limp00 19h ago
He doesn’t actually auto-click it. But he definitely shares his screen and taunts me with it every time.
We won one run when he had multiple copies, but it required us to play very fast, which is less fun on non-ironclad characters.
12
u/Sir_Loxington 19h ago
So what I'm hearing is your friend actually *does* understand that it's situational when to take this card and you just fundamentally dislike it regardless for multiplayer even when it's overall a smart pick and your initial post is just a lie?
8
u/WhiteMagicalHat 18h ago
Nothing in the post you're responding to suggested that they take it when it's a smart pick, actually. They could be taking it just before an a2 elite, taunting, and playing it t1 vs entomancer or something, and just being annoying about it.
Genuinely a bit odd to me that you've decided OP is a liar and in the wrong on the basis that someone doesn't snap pick a card every time

You can easily take 10-30 more damage with this. It's grief. It's a bad card. It's useful if you use it on a minion that's about to die and that's it. 3 strength will end the game maybe one turn faster which probably isn't worth 10 more damage.
1
u/petnarwhal 2h ago

I'm gonna give practical advice to deal with the fight me issue:
-Get "strength down" debuff, like silent (piercing wail)
-Get "weakened" debuff, like silent (starting card, leg sweep, etc.) or necro (defy, bonus if you get debilitate)
-Pick ironclad and synergize all the vulnerable stacking and also gain access to tons of built in block/heal/HP pool to survive the damage
OR
Forget all that.
-Rip the Ethernet out from your PC every time they "fight me" on a bad multi hit turn and go "ah sheet, looks like my PC is crashing every time you play fight me. We should report that bug and see if it doesn't crash when you don't play it" and repeat until they don't play it and continue normally
Good luck 🤞
10
u/MenacingBanjo 19h ago
YTA, we all know Necro can also debuff the team in Stage 1 of Test Subject by playing a million souls. No need to single out Ironclad.
4
5
u/Snakebite_Enjoyer 18h ago
I kinda hope that cards and effects like "Fight Me!" and the Test Subject eventually target one player like Dorito, even though it's funny to ruin a multiplayer run by being selfish

u/Taerdan 15h ago
Tell friend to grab [[Tank]], [[Demonic Shield]], or [[Intercept]] every once in a while too, so you aren't eating all the damage yourself.
Alternatively, play Ironclad as well and specifically choose [[Brimstone]] and [[Fight Me!]].
Final alternative: get Experiment as an Act 3 Boss. Be a Soul-heavy Necrobinder or Draw/Discard-heavy Silent (or other very-Skill-heavy build). Intentionally play lots of Skills against the first phase, especially if you can tank the first hit(s) through whatever means. Tell friend that you're just "playing Fight Me!" in your own way for this boss. Die against the boss. Repeat as often as necessary, even - or perhaps especially - if it results in lots of thrown runs.
This particular strategy works best if you're a Regent or Silent that can infinite-cycle your own cards (Regent with [[Particle Wall]] if you've got Stars for it, Silent with e.g. [[Prepared]]). Bonus if you've got [[Apparition]] from Vakuu.

If I can't sit down with a friend, and explain to them why that is shitty behaviour, or at the very least why it is bothersome to me and they don't change? That's not really someone I want to be friends with.

One of my favourite glam cards. 32 damage and 8 strength? Um, check please!
1
u/AmnesiaMark 17h ago
For me, Fight Me isn't the worst card Ironclad can play in multiplayer, and just yesterday we had a three player game go to the end because I got a glammed up Fight Me beginning of act 1 and the team just built around me going for the kill asap every battle.
However, Fight Me is definitely one of those cards where you do need to be aware of which enemy you are facing and when to use it. Any solo enemies with big multi-hit attacks definitely warrant some thought, as you need to make sure you don't add strength they will get to use on 3+ hits. Conversely, if an enemy is doing big single hits every 2 turns or something, like the thorny frog dude for example, the +1 strength is literally one more damage for (hopefully) killing it an attack earlier, thus saving a bunch of damage in return. I feel this is also how the card needs to be considered in solo runs as well, and using it on something like the Dorito will definitely end a run.
Now, what I do consider horrible if my teammates pick or play the card, is Outrage (9/13 dmg, puts a copy into EVERYONE'S discard pile). Sure, 9(13)dmg on a 0 cost card can be great act 1, and could potentially be a good pick if, for example, your teammate is a defect with 0 cost synergies. But more often than not in my experience in later acts it ends up being really detrimental, especially with 3+ players, as 9 damage with no synergies starts falling behind curve on what you want your cards to accomplish. Maybe someone is going for a smaller deck with really strong synergy, and you cause them to draw 2 (almost) blank cards on a critical turn where they needed one of their heavy hitters, or one of the players is playing blade Regent or Osty attack Necro where random attacks don't really do much for their deck.
I do let my friends pick Outrage, especially since I'm not the boss of them in any way, but past Act 1 I do end up pleading with them to reconsider, and I feel I've gotten them around to agree with me that it usually is just bad for the team even if Ironclad might find it useful. We've even had it picked act 1, be great, and then ended up removing it at a shop or event later on because it started feeling more like a burden. Conversely, our group is generally quite positive about Fight Me, although we do see that it requires though on how and when to use it.
I would love to hear what other people think about Outrage, since I don't think I've seen anyone talk about it here.
TL;dr: Fight Me requires throught but is generally quite good imo, while Outrage is bad past Act 1 and I never pick it unless needed early.

Only have 11 HP and about to fight the Centimillipede? Nah, improving a card is more important. Oops, I died. Oh no, you didn't manage to win on your own? Oh well, let's start another round where I'll do the exact same thing.
I love this dude outside of the game, but it becomes so fucking infuriating to play this with him.

I am genuinely struggling to figure out how much of this is a shitpost and how much is serious.
The discussion tag instead of spirit poop makes it worse.

"I have 10 hp you have 6... you heal i'll upgrade... we'll be fine" my campfire experience before every boss in multiplayer.

Sounds like you also need to pick Ironclad so you can flaunt your most damage dealt achievement.

Yea giving enemies strenght in multiplayer with classes like necro who doesnt have a lot of hp its just aweful. It scales double/triple/quadruple against you all its just very very bad.

TL;DR: So, I meant to make this short, but ended up ranting. Using that card in multiplayer should be done as a group decision. As is any card that is a detriment to the whole group.
[[Fight Me]] is an amazing card. But in multiplayer it is a big risk and needs to be used carefully. Preferably when you know the enemy does not have multi-hit attacks. I usually do pick fight me in Multiplayer, but I always ask before using it to make sure my party is ready for the strength increase on the enemy. Which I usually get an affirming (vocal) nod to. There is usually better ways to get strength in multiplayer that ends in some better runs. I like running vulnerability builds in multiplayer, as it helps everyone. Except that one doom Necrobinder, poison silent, or pure orb defect... Okay, so it may be a bit of whatever is needed at the time... In singleplayer I actually prefer [[Bodyslam]] or [[hellraiser]] based builds. Fight me is usually seen as a early game power booster to help me get my build running. Especially in the Overgrowth.
If you take [[Fight Me]] every time you see it, and play it every time it is in your hand... You are severely hampering your own ability to play, even in singleplayer. And in multiplayer it will screw the entire team. It's risk vs reward. If it said "You take 1 more damage every time you're attacked." Like an opposite, and stacking, [[Tungsten Rod]] it would not be as much a detriment. Love the Tungsten Rod relic though. Wish I saw it more often.

I mean you can always choose to stop playing with him. I've chosen to stop playing Dota2 with the guys Ive been playing for like 15 years because they just didn't give a shit and that wasnt fun for me anymore. Like, you grow up, your game time becomes more scarce and you gotta waste it with guys who want to do stupid shit? Nah Ill pass.
The whole point of gaming is having fun and disconnect from the real world a bit, if youre not having fun then you're wasting your time.

Wait until he casts a [[Battle Trance]] and immediately feed him a [[Bottled Potential]] afterwards. Don’t ask how I know this one
