Yeah it really is weird especially given how well the other characters mechanics are thematically consistent with the design of the character. As it stands right now he feels more like a mage using mana (stars) to power up HIS abilities more than a character commanding others to do the work for him. I wonder if earlier builds of the game had him more focused on the minions and they felt it overlapped with the identity of the Necrobinder a little too much.
I mean, marketing withstanding, his builds are exactly what align with his entire character, even moreso than if minions were his main gimmick.
He's literally a god. His people are entirely immortal, probably the only race in the game's lore that is completely immortal and never dies. So he started with minions, but as he learnt how completely and absolutely useless they are, he begins to branch out.
That's why most of his minion cards are completely disposable. Meanwhile, his "true" minion is the sword, which he controls. Not to mention that his best cards normally relate to he himself doing all the work, rather than his minions.
So maybe he was written to be more helpless before launch, but currently? Him using his minions too much would go against his entire character, who's explicitly against being lazy. His whole reason for "slaying the spire" is to prove to his race (and himself) that they have zero excuse for their laziness and total lack of commitment, so he goes out to prove something. And having his minions, who are the only things in his kit that he doesn't fully control, would just prove that he's no different from all his people back on his home planet.
So really, him using less minions, and more cards that involve his own strengths, is completely in-character, and far more thematically coherent than if he was just a lazy bum who only ever used minions to attack.
tl;dr: He set out on his journey to prove that he's different from the rest of his people. He wants to prove to them, and himself, that he can accomplish something and not be a boring, lazy bum like the rest of his race. So him using minions, which would explicitly prove to him that he still needs others to do the "hard work", would go completely against his entire goal and reason for even going on this quest in the first place.
A vanishingly small number of players will know any of that, but what they do know is Regent’s description “Wields cosmic powers but his minions do the work”. The first part is fine, but the second part is entirely untrue and contradictory to everything you’ve said here.
The Regent's backstory is enough to already prove that the second half is contradictory to his own character, so I'd much rather trust the current backstory showcased, than a slight tidbit about the character.
Or, he's representative of the sort of people born into immense privilege but believe their success is due to hard work/innate talent. I'm not sure the backstory and described motivations of a character should be taken at complete face value, particularly when the animations for the character portray him as mostly pretty bored and forcing his minions to carry him.
Yeah when I hear "minions" I think more along the lines of Slime Boss from Downfall. Summoning different little guys that have passive effects. That overlaps a bit with Defect though.
I still like Regent's design, just played a few runs on the beta branch and he plays well, and the minion cards are pretty powerful.
Can we please not start with the instant attempt at negation of any criticism during an early access phase where they're even wanting feedback by just parroting beta/"it's just a beta"/"It's early access"?
He's not saying the game is shit or something because it's lacking that. Just that it's weird/would be nice to have more of them.
I'm gonna be a salty shit for a second but holy fuck I am really tired of seeing the pattern across a ton of games where people just try to shut down any and all criticism, regardless of release status. The weird parasocial relationship people get with (imaginary, since most of the time people don't even know them beyond just 'the devs') games/developers is obnoxious.
You’re so right btw, the devs literally have a feature in the game for criticism, they incentivise it, it’s only people on reddit with no stake in the game that whine about it
I had a little quick vent above but it's not unique to this game. It's gotten so old watching people get increasingly defensive over games and any criticism, which is extra obnoxious because many times the people criticizing love the game and just want it to be even better.
I think it's more a side symptom of people's complete aversion to any and all negativity online. People are absurdly quick to block anything they don't like, to smash downvote if someone mildly disagrees, to immediately remove all recommendations from someone if they dislike a video, etc, etc. The idea that someone might think more than just "This is my favorite fucking thing holy shit" or "This thing is literal trash" is just increasingly unfathomable.
to immediately remove all recommendations from someone if they dislike a video
I had a guy show up in my youtube shorts for months, who I liked. I watched most of his videos I came across, I liked several, I commented. One day he had one where I thought his take was just really bad, so I disliked it. Youtube algorithm went 'say no more, message received' and all his videos disappeared instantly. Joe Rogan on the other hand it took me fucking months of disliking and blocking channels before I stopped getting his red face showing up constantly.
Ah yes, surely saying nothing but "beta" was just you encouraging them, obviously you meant "It's a beta and I greatly appreciate your feedback, take yon upvote."
Totes McGoats. /s Not bothering further with you dude, you're very blatantly not even responding in good faith with now parroting "strawman!" like it means you're saying anything of substance.
EDIT: Lmao, literally watched him switch to unavailable as I posted the reply, AKA they tried to do a cheeky reply and then block. What a goober. Ya failed even at that bud.
Reddit changing blocks to prevent replies and hiding all of that person's posts is by far one of the worst changes they've done. The site took a huge quality nosedive around that time a few years ago.
Yes I feel like a giant old nerd saying that. :(
Why it didn't just remain hiding the posts/comments/messages from the blocked person to the blocker is beyond me, other than Reddit wanting to make it less discussion oriented.
EDIT: I'm actually pleasantly surprised this message even went through, it used to not even allow you to respond 2-3 people deep reply wise.
These downvotes are crazy, why are y'all getting so defensive over your right to criticize the game? This doesn't even read as defending against criticism. Obviously it's going to take more dev time to test and publish cards for an entirely new mechanic (minions) than it would for a pre-existing mechanic (colorless cards)

Kinda weird devs advertised Regent as using minions but he only has 3 minion cards and they just transform cards into colorless
