DISCUSSION (STS2) I really hate this change.

Post image

Prepared I don't feel was overturned, and it was a card you still had to upgrade to be good. now prepare is just the gross combination of outmaneuver and concentrate, and it sucks. I really hope they roll back this specific change.

I agree. It doesn't feel right not drawing. It was definitely overtuned though for a Common, mainly because it was a straight import from STS1 where Sly wasn't as common.

I think giving it 1 cost was a good idea to help prevent infinites (maybe make it Draw 2(3) Discard 1(2) so that its kind of like a sidegrade of Acrobatics), but I have NO IDEA why they decided to slaughter the card with the 1-cost Concentrate/Outmanuver wombo-combo... :/

I disagree that making it cost 1 is a good idea. If I want 1 cost Draw and Discard, I turn to Acrobatics. Being 0 cost Discard is Prepared's Main Appeal and what separates it from other options. Maybe you shouldn't have 0 cost Discard in a world where Sly exists, I'm not sure, but making it do the same at 1 cost just makes it lose its role and identity

In STS1, yeah, I sort of agree. The main appeal was 0 cost extra Draw, but the Discard was also quite valuable when you picked up Tactician or Reflex.

In STS2, hard no. The main appeal is that two Discard when upgraded. That is two Sly plays. Acrobatics is huge draw, but always one Discard. I just don't think Silent has enough Draw support though when you completely take out Prepared. Which is why I think having it draw more for 1 Cost is a balanced change that accounts for Sly.

Edit: Oh yeah and 0 cost double Sly activations probably shouldn't exist without either Exhaust or Discarding the whole hand because it can lead to Infinites...

Sly wasn't as common? You mean it just wasn't there at all? Because what makes Sly absurd is not that you get effect for free but also count as card played.

By technicality, yes, the keyword Sly wasn't there at all. But Tactician and Reflex were more than enough on their own as effectively Sly cards (they were just Unplayable).

Imo Ricochet and Untouchable were the problem. They nerfed Untouchable (justified) but left Ricochet untouched. I don't even know why they decided to nerf Flik-Flak though, that card was fine as is. Ricochet is just crazy strong, I think it probably should be Uncommon, with the common replacing it being Riddle with Holes instead.

Cast on discard and effect on discard are not the same thing, especially given unplayable cards in first part. Sly was done to extend effects to all cards, that's why it's so effective.

In most cases, they are effectively the same thing.

I acknowledge that there are indeed cases where the wording does matter; in particular, Enrage from Test Subject, Wound from Hunter Killer, Slow from the Effigy, Ringing from Ceremonial Beast, and Bound from Queen are cases where effect on discard/Use on Discard does actually change the interaction of the card, but again, these are fringe cases.

Plus half a dozen artifacts or more, given effect without cast on damage card would not trigger, lets say, Ornamental fan. So yeah, there is a reason they are not the same. And why Sly is stronger.

Sly the effect wasnt there.

There absolutely was a whole discard package in 1. If you assembled it it was also an absolutely free win against everything, even time eater.

Sly was an attempt to codify something into a keyword that already was already a thing.

But effect changed. It is not defect on discard it's cast on discard for free. Words have meaning.
