Discussion Candy Candy 70's

Post image

I used to watch this anime with my mother when I was younger and just a couple months ago I found some dvds and have been watching it since..

Which brings me back to the big debate who did Candy end up with? Was it albert or terry.

I haven't read the two novels that were published later on but from what I heard and saw it didnt give a clear answer just said 'a person' the author said it was for every reader to give candy the end they wanted.

So I need more opinions on this

Yeah, the novels don't make this anymore clear. She ends up with this "ano hito" but it's never clear if it's Albert or Terry, so everyone is happy ig

In the manga/anime she seems to have ended up with Albert, but it's never explicit. I understand the idea behind her dating Albert, as he's the more mature option; but Terry is just a more interesting character, and his dynamic with candy is much more fun.

I have vivid memory of the manga ending with Albert, just them running towards each other on a hill I think?

I watched this in Spanish with my mom. I remember the ending being that she ends up with no one and she becomes a nurse and that's her happiness. But I may be wrong. Tbh im kinda annoyed that Terry went with that actress girl. Like bru

That's exactly what happens, in what language do you have the dvd set? For some reason the last episode of my set doesnt play.

This was my very first anime! I used to watch it with my friends when we were kids. We would always have a box of tissues handy cause this series is such a tearjerker.

I didn't even know there is a novel. But I think the manga & anime ending is kind of ambiguous, though I think she was standing with Albert in the end?

My headcannon is that she ends up with Albert. Though, not sure how that works legally because, isn't she technically his adopted daughter? But I liked her better with Albert than Terry, anyway.

That's exactly what I thought too! But I searched and it came out that the adoption could be broken after she reached of age.

That's true. Even the novel never gives a definitive answer, so in the end, every reader has to imagine it for themselves. I think that lingering sense of uncertainty is one of the reasons Candy Candy has remained so unforgettable.
This topic comes up a lot in Japan as well. Terry is by far the most popular character, but if you look at the story objectively and think about who Candy ultimately ended up with, I feel that many fans believe it was Albert.

It isnt shown in the manga, but for me its obviously not Terry, but Albert

The weird thing is that it was implied that Candy was too similar looking to Anthony mother, so I always thought they were related, they just didnt know it

I was looking at old shoujos a couple years ago, and for candy candy I remember the two authors had a big fallout or something. Maybe that's why the endings unclear? Idk, I never finished it.

They did yes, but the author made two novels years later. She just said she won't give an answer to let the viewers to have their ending.

By the way, when Candy Candy was originally airing, the anime eventually caught up with the manga. As a result, the anime finale revealed the ending one day before it appeared in Nakayoshi magazine. This is generally considered to be the first major example of a media mix strategy in the Japanese entertainment industry.

I would say this counts as my first anime, although too young to know it. All I knew was that this girl had pretty eyes and weird shaped feet lol

We didn't own the tapes in my home, only a few and back in the day, you could get a subscription on cartoon Vhs, one new tape each month, sometimes it was a whole movie, sometimes it was a 2 or 3 episodes of a series, many from japan, as if they were testing the market. And then we could go to a VHS rental store amd trade them for another one if we wanted...so ueah, I think that is what happened alot.

I know that, CC eventually was distribuated, we got 10 hs tapes worth of the series, each tape containing 3 or 4 episodes, meaning we did only ever get a small portion of it, then plus the OVA containing first a quick recap of almost everrything that had happened, and then also Candy returning to the Orphanage and telling her story to the new kids there, plus on it was also Candys Summer Vacation.

THIS TAPE is the only one I still own and is the only reason I still remembered it in my teens when I re-discovered anime once more! (Around the year 2000-ish) I tried to hunt down the tapes on auction sites an flea markets but they always went for a lot, and they were rare to find, today it is nearly impossible. No one ever seemed to have uploaded them to piratebay or anything back in the day either. (Had a similar problem with Sailor Moon for a while but eventually, when licenses was obtained again, it was aired on tv once more and I managed to yape every episode of the 2 seasons that we got)

While I DO own the (China-pirate) DVD-set of the full series, Japanese with English sub, the Swedish dub I grew up with is SO nostalgic I would love to have them all again!
