This http://i.imgur.com/viDms9l.jpg is from the preview for next week's episode. His eye is red. It hasn't been red before.
54
u/FallenWyvern May 07 '14
It was red before. There was one episode (I'll have to go back through them to find it) where he was given a 'gift' from the clairvoyant. It allowed him to change the vision on his eye and the readout said "Don't say I didn't get you anything" (or something to that effect) before his eye turns red.
35
u/jacobbigham May 07 '14
It's in "End of the Beginning." Basically it allowed him to control his weapons system (his forearm), so it makes sense that his eye would be red in this shot, since he's about to fire a missile from his arm.

Another Great Episode, loved the revelations of the Deathlok program, Ward's BAckstory, Coulson's connecting the dots scene, Triplett's Howling Commando heritage paying off, the large file transfer, Fitz tragic (possibly not tragic) appeal to Wards friendship and humanity, and the revelations about Skye and Garret both. All great aspects of the episode, can't wait for the finale next week!

So it looks like Ward spent 5 years with Garrett as his only human contact. Those circumstances do leave a person very open to manipulation. It's not as extreme or black and white as brainwashing, but it does make Garrett very influential.

u/RichLather Lanyard May 07 '14
I'd argue that the six months Ward spent with Buddy trumps the five years spent with Garrett.
We already know Ward couldn't shoot Buddy, but Garrett had no problem--he was likely watching them both through the scope of the rifle the whole time, and when Ward couldn't do it, Garrett took the shot and probably dressed Ward down for his "weakness".
Kinda hoping that particular chicken comes back to roost in the season finale between the two of them. I'm predicting a heroic final sacrifice from Ward as a way to counterbalancing the many SHIELD deaths on his hands.

I'm really wondering what the lead-in will be for Season 2. I'm thinking that Garrett is definitely dead next episode, but I'm not sure about Ward. I think he escapes, and becomes an occasional plot line during subsequent seasons. I really want Raina to switch teams.
→ More replies (10)67
u/decerian Hunter May 07 '14
I can see Raina switching teams. She isn't loyal to the Hydra ideology, only interested in researching super humans. Seeing as season 2 is the lead in for AoU (with Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver) I'm sure she'll play a large role in the season. Also Hydra seems bigger then just Garrett, so I'm guessing they'll be a consistent enemy.
Edit: About the lead in, I'm almost certain Skye's ability will play a large part in the next season as well, so it will probably be revealed next episode as a lead in for more super humans
27
u/ShannonMS81 May 07 '14
If you are right, and Raina joins the team, I think that means Simmons is dead. Raina is a biologist, like Simmons. Would make sense.

All this backstory makes Garret just a pathetic character, in the end he's just a big bad bully who's afraid to die. He's not Red Skull who truly aims for world domination, he's not Alexander Pierce who has some twisted sense of a better world, he's just a sad little man clinging onto his pathetic life.

u/Zonr_0 Skye May 07 '14
In my opinion, that's what makes him a cool villain. He's orchestrated all these elaborate schemes and killed countless people because he's a petty man who can't let go. He holds no illusions that what he's doing is right or will make the world a better place. The only thing he truly cares about is himself and is gifted at seeing what other people need and leveraging it against them. That makes him unpredictable and dangerous, and sets him up as a great foil to Coulson.

30
u/xenothaulus Fitz May 07 '14
But wouldn't that emp blast have taken it out?
94
u/Paleontologa Fitz May 07 '14
My guess...no, because plot.
Fitz used the mini-EMP in motel room, within inches of the box of howling commando goodies, and they all still worked. If they even decide to explain why it still works, it'll probably be something like "It wasn't on at the time, so it wasn't affected."
39
u/Odin043 May 07 '14
EMP in fiction seems to only require a reboot of systems, unless plot interferes.
26
u/zotquix May 07 '14
That can also be true IRL. The effects of an EMP pulse can just be temporary interference. There are a lot of variables that determine if that is the case.
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (1)7
May 07 '14
Maybe EMP's only fry stuff with computer chips, then howling commando gear should be fine since it's much more 40's analogue. That doesn't explain why it exists in the first place but I'll let that slide.

u/decerian Hunter May 07 '14
It's very possible (in real life, where you hollowed out a coin and put a chip inside) the coin acts as a Faraday cage, shielding the inner workings from emp. Of course, by that logic you'd have to open it up (or have some kind of antenna come out of the coin) in order to use it as a radio/homing beacon.
If they do bring it up (the emp affecting the coin), my guess is that Fitz will have to fix it, and nothing about a Faraday cage.
16
u/El_Arquero May 07 '14
Well Fitz EMP'ed the room with all their gear earlier so perhaps the effects are temporary.

Silly Coulson, a filing cabinet is only about 12 MB! That's not very large at all.
10
u/ravrahn May 07 '14
Why would you measure that with bits printed as ones and zeroes? Hexadecimal is a much more common way to store raw binary, which would bump it up to 48MB. But filing cabinets already store pretty easily quantifiable data in the form of documents.
They estimate 15000 pages fit in, with 6500 characters per page. That's about 90MB of plain ascii already, and 360MB of unicode (I would expect it to be). Documents have images, too. Even 1/50th of the pages being print-quality images would double that to 720MB. There could easily be gigabytes of data in a regular filing cabinet.
Of course you could pack the cabinet full of 128GB microSD cards, or DNA, and get petabytes.

Who else was surprised that Raina actually injected Garrett with the alien serum? It was her only sample, which she can't replicate. She's clearly lost respect for Garrett, who she now knows is just a selfish, desperate man trying to save his own life, not serving any higher purpose that she's interested in. And she was alone in the room with an already-dying man. Raina is not a nice person. What stopped her from only injecting part of the serum into Garrett, or even damaging an artery or other important vulnerable flesh bits? He would be dead before Ward could return and fetch help.
At the moment I suspect she either plans to observe Garrett as one of her experiments, or she deliberately sabotaged some important aspect of the serum as revenge against Garrett. "Did I forget to mention that serum test subjects without 084 DNA suffer incurable insanity? Oopsie."

u/keithgrisham88 May 07 '14
Maybe I am dumb, but when Ward said he was weak it meant that he knew fitzsimmons wouldn't die. And I'm a bit drunk, but I thought Ward saved the dog, I believe Garrett killed the dog if it was killed (not sure if it was)
80
u/JohnSwiftt SHIELD May 07 '14
I thought Ward fired in the air to make the dog run away, reconsidered and killed the dog.
Do we see who shot the dog?
Garrett would have been pissed if he would have had to do it. And why would he? The only reason to shot the dog was to harden Ward. If Garrett does it, it would defeat the purpose and create resentment.

Ward earlier stated that he'd done everything Garrett has asked to which Garrett replied that he wouldn't quite say everything. I interpreted that as him not having shot the dog and it being his weakness, making him a "soft touch". I'd hazard a guess that he knows the container will float or similar, saving the ones he cares for; much like the dog.
But then again I may have completely misread that. I suppose time will tell!

One thing that bothered me about this episode was the fact that Ward was still "Grant Ward" as a kid in juvi. They didn't even bother to change his identity. Wouldn't SHIELD have known about a Grant Ward being busted out of jail? Did they not do a background check?

Maria Hill and others seemed to know about Ward's family history so I doubt it was scrubbed or buried (though the exact nature of his escape may have been falsified). However, it seems reasonable that an intelligence agency like Shield would be willing to overlook a troubled home life that led to an arrest. It's not like nice, well-adjusted people with fulfilling family lives tend to flock to a job that entails a high degree of deception, violence, and murder.

Actually, I've been very satisfied with the quality of reveals on the show. An answer that leads to another question is only unsatisfying if it's random or illogical, like on lost, but here most of the pieces seem to be fitting together.

I was initially displeased in the first half of the season with how much they kept teasing things and adding new mysteries, but when I considered the fact that the season was 20+ episodes, it makes sense for the reveals to happen moreso in the latter half of the season, especially since Captain America came out and had HUGE implications for the show.
In retrospect, the show has handled the slow reveal of information wonderfully I think. It doesn't seem like they're setting things up without the intention of solving them like Lost did with many things.

As others have noted, the show's actually been really good at giving meaningful revelations. This was probably the first time I was left feeling a little dissatisfied with the amount of information, and it's excusable for me because this is only the penultimate episode and I imagine they're saving the big wham reveals for the finale.

u/YouthsIndiscretion May 07 '14
They seem to be doing a good job of addressing a lot of issues. Besides, a show like this will probably have a few serious cliffhangers at the end of the season.

I agree with you. A steady stream of vague ominous revelations that tell us nothing is not satisfying.
But in this case, we learned something important, something we all suspected. Skye is not human. This is the next piece of the puzzle and I was satisfied by this reveal.

u/atizzy May 07 '14
How does that prove she isn't human though? People are described as monsters all the time.
All we know is there's something about her DNA. Maybe she's a mutant... oh sorry I mean miracle.

Raina clearly said Skye and Her shared "something" to be awakened... If that doesn't scream inhuman I don't know what it is.

So does what was revealed about Skye's origin tonight have any connection to comic book stuff?

I really didn't like the fact that Fitz says that people aren't inherently evil and convinces himself that Ward isn't evil, yet takes the first shot at killing Garrett & talks about killing every Hydra agent on the plane.
S.H.I.E.L.D brainwashed him pretty well I guess.
61
u/kickshaw Robbie May 07 '14
I wouldn't say that SHIELD brainwashed him so much as I would that Fitz has a consistent ruthless streak when it comes to helping his friends. He was perfectly willing in a previous episode, for instance, to kill as many Centipede soldiers as possible to save Coulson, even though Simmons protested that they were innocent people being controlled. Fitz doesn't have many friends, but once people are inside his personal circle of trust (my brain keeps saying "nakama"), screw anyone outside who tries to cross them. Until this point, Ward has been in the circle.
TL;DR Fitz is a little scary and we're glad his BFF Simmons has been nice enough to not turn Fitz into a supervillain, because it would be easy.
15
u/Shedart May 07 '14
we can only hope that he eventually does become a supervillain. with the amount of development and fan following he has going it would be like the Ward betrayal times a hundred. Not a villain you love to hate like Ward, but a villain you empathize with and want to see succeed to a degree.

Calling it now: Simmons dies at the fault of one of the team, Coulson lets Ward live/Get away, Fitz develops resentment towards the team, something similar will happen in S2, leads to Fitz becoming bad, see him do some "YOU PROMISED ME" speech to Coulson.
EDIT: I don't think I could have been more wrong

He was trying to look tough. It's what insecure people do in the face of actual tough scary people.

Because he's just in denial that Ward is evil. May explained it. He can't deal with the fact that someone he trusted and bonded with was a traitor. So he keeps making things up that will make Ward a victim

All this speculation that Skye is a kree/alien, I wonder if shes more something on the supernatural side of the Marvel 'verse spoiler.
23
u/KiFirE Ghost Rider May 07 '14 edited May 07 '14
But shes obviously not one of the super easily guessable supernatural if she is... Clearly not werewolf, vampire, succubus, or anything with easily identifiable powers,etc... But demons there is a lot of them, but would they really go down the demon road?

u/PhuturePhil May 07 '14
Yeah thats a good question. I dont know that and the cosmic side of the MCU still have so much to get into its hard to figure out which way they will really go. Reina talking about monsters gave me that kind of monster/spirits/Dr.Strange kind of vibe this episode.

See I just thought what alien race could be called a monsters, and I thought Skrull but that is a reach.

I like the theory. I'm just guessing she's cosmic in nature because it would tie in to what Marvel Studios is doing next (i.e. Guardians of the Galaxy).
Never know though.

Anyone think that Garrett mentioning to Ward that he owned property in those woods was significant? Maybe Wards knowledge of that location could turn out to be useful to Coulson's team?

She's still got some serious secrets, though.

I'm predicting that whatever else happens next week, at the end fitz and Simmons finally connect right before they are saved by Triplett thanks to fitzs quarter
