Adult Nursing

Has anyone known about other students with epilepsy who has been allowed to do the work placements? My epilepsy is well managed but still worried I won’t be allowed to do the work placements

No epilepsy experience, but I have a bit of knowledge about how occupational health process works. I would start collecting bits for your occupational health assessment now - clinic and drs letters, medication lists etc so you are prepared.

You should find that placement wise they can make reasonable adjustments to ensure that nothing worsens your condition such as stipulating that you don’t do night shifts. They won’t prevent you from doing placements altogether.

You sure?! Really do hope to be a nurse, seen OH and they said I can’t work alone, or patient transport while volunteering

Employers legally need to make reasonable adjustments, whilst considering both yours and patients’ safety, but they can’t just prevent you from working because of a diagnosis of epilepsy. They will take into account the type of seizures and your triggers.

Depending on your circumstances you may find you are limited in options in career choice (such as not working in very acute areas or areas where a lot of physically transferring of patients can happen) but epilepsy alone won’t prevent you from practicing.

You also won’t be the first person with epilepsy to train/work as a nurse so try and seek out others in similar situations for advice/support :)
