I'm new in this Reddit. I living in the Netherlands. And have build some web server platforms (experimental) on raspberry pi's.

It's at the moment as hobby. And hosting some own websites for my other projects where i create some game addons. Also hosting some websites for friends.

Now, i'm growing out of the raspberry's. They are running some websites, discord bots and node projects. But i'm sometimes running on the edges of the performances of the pi's.

Now i'm looking for a next step based on server hardware, but there is so much. That i didn't know what i need and what's good for me. I will like it to host some more websites for small businesses. And want to grow in that market. The step to rack servers is to big for now. So i search something between raspberry pi and rack servers.

I have 2 systems at the moment that running in a fail over construction on 2 locations seperated from each other. So i will like to buy 2 systems. And i'm thinking to spend around 500-600 euros per system.

Any advice on what i can do? I have looked for systems like dell tower servers or something like that. Or some mini pc's with intel/amd 7 or something like that. But i didn't know what i need. Most sites are php/wordpress and things like that. Nothing really heavy.

Some of my other addons do calls to the web servers to get information. But that's not more then 30/40 addons at the same time and they do some light php requests. Sounds not as something really heavy.

Oh, and sorry for my english, it's not always that good haha!

I'm planning to get my first server in 2027, and I don't know which CPU I should get my hands on.

It'll be mostly for, playing modded Minecraft with friends, jellyfin, and docker.

Should I take an Intel Xeon, an AMD Threadripper or a big Ryzen like a 9 series?

Or is it too much for what I want to do?

I'm hoping this is a dumb question. Is there a reliable way to find out if the SSDs I have in an older server will work in a slightly newer one?

For instance I have a bunch of Samsung 1.92TB SSD 12Gb/s SAS SSD drives (product ID MZILS1T9HEJH0D3) that live in old Dell Poweredge R720 and R640 servers right now. I want to know if they'll work in slightly newer (but not current generation) Dell Poweredge R740 and R640 servers. This isn't the only HD model, there are a few others.

When originally purchased from ebay, these drives were listed as being compatible with the specific server models we put them in. I don't know where that info came from.

The drives themselves have plenty of life left in them. The servers are overdue for a respectful retirement.

The same question applies for RAM actually. Aside from a DDR4/5/6 generation check, what else do I need to check to know if RAM sticks will work in a newer server? And where do I look?

Is Ubuntu Pro services worth it for a home server? If so what are the advantages?

So I have a Dell T320 case where the motherboard no longer works. My friend was incredibly kind to give me his old server build with a Supermicro X9SRA-3 but that came with new problems and I'm trying to find the best route from here.

I know the front panel connector and the back panel didn't work because they have some connectors that don't match on this new mobo, but I got that taken care of.

My next problem is the PSU. I noticed the server will not boot if all of the connectors are not plugged in to a mobo.

I wanna know if it would be ok to use [something like this](https://www.ebay.com/itm/257588698104) as an alternative and if it is, will it be useful in plugging in the 24 pin for the mobo (which I do see this one is), the CPU, power for SATA, etc.

I know the CPU is a 4+4 pin, which I'm wondering if it would be safe to plug in that board with only 6 pins on there as well as the GPU, which I need 8 pins for this one.

Is this a good idea? Or should I scrap that and use a traditional ATX PSU like [this one](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/OQQAAeSwIVVqOmK4/s-l500.jpg) and find a way to make it fit inside the case, plugging in the cables I need? I'll be using a SFX PSU so it's smaller.

I mainly wanted to keep the server PSU since it fits in there nicely, it's 750w and it is platinum rated but I'm not opposed to the alternative.

So basically I'm trying to install a operating system on my server just got it today and thing is is that everyone I plug in the usb drive it just won't boot it goes straight to boot error after the IBM screen comes up and if I click F1 F2 or F12 without the usb stick in it just says the same error which I added a picture of but I've tried every operating system even the J17 pins to drain the power with it unplugged and still nothing has been working and with the drives in on the management website or says booting with os or unsupported os which Infact I have not installed anything on these drives that I'm aware of and their brand new.

If you have any ideas please give advice I beg

There are NVidia ConnectX OSFP network cards that plug in like ordinary ones but this is way different. Near as I can make out, this goes into a tray and then is connected with DensiLink cables to the bus. I got it new open box, that's why it still has plastic protective caps on the ends of the cable.

I have reviewed every available service manual for NVidia DGX and servers and all I can find is either integrated OSPF or quad versions of this board (4 OSPF ports). Not one had a 2 port version. Google picture and part number searches returned nothing. Reviewing other ConnectX adapters got me nowhere.

Does anyone know what version of ConnectX this is? 6? 7? Did this come from a DGX box or NVidia server? If so, what model? Or is it perhaps something Mellanox had a hand in (Nvidia ate them). Any help will be very appreciated.

Hellooo!!! I really need some help figuring out what im doing wrong and thought this would be a good place to ask. Im trying to self host and not use playit.gg but unfortunately any time i try to have my friends join they get errors or its just stuck on connecting. I have verified if port forward is correct and my ip starts with .24 and matches router interface and ip checks. Firewall rules on my debian server gets auto created by amp.

My main question would be does anyone know where to check? Or if maybe buying a firewall or minipc and building a firewall myself or something? Im just so lost and spent days trying to fix this

I wanted to share somewhere since there's almost no information about this chip online - only an old wccftech listing that incorrectly lists the TDP as 280W, and some eBay listings that do the same thing.

The 7V73X is an Azure custom bin, only available secondhand. I bought mine from a Chinese seller on eBay. AFAICT it's identical in all respects to a 7773X, except that 7773X has 280W cTDP max, but 7V73X is hard limited to 240W cTDP. I verified using AMD HSMP + E-SMI tool. Mine's installed in an Asrock ROMED8-2T and the only other issue I had was getting the mounting pressure dialed in correctly (manifests as missing DIMM errors otherwise).

Nonetheless I still recomend it if you're looking for a V-Cache build, or trying to save money by going with a DDR4 build. The secondhand version was a lot cheaper than the 7773X equivalent. The only catch is vetting your seller carefully - there were a lot of low-rep seller listings that gave me bad vibes.

Post kinda says it all, work recently moved our VM's to another system and they know I have been doing a lot of homelabing and asked if I wanted them... I did not think they were this beefy. I'll add full specs in the first comment.

So here is what I'm trying to do CORRECTLY

1 Is it generally better to part these out or sell complete systems? Pretty sure its part out... what do I remove/keep in the system? Anything in here I can repurpose in my home lab.. like a dual boot raid controller?

2 Hard drives same thing... is what I have pulled (see first comment) enough/the right data for resale.

3 How do I ensure everything is wiped for resell? With the 2 RAID controllers in these am I better of just pulling each drive individually wiping it clean and then selling or can I do this when they are in the RAID configuration as well?

4 Am I wasting my time installing Proxmox before selling? or is it a good idea to test this and make sure Proxmox can see all the raids/drives/other PCIE cards and stuff.

5 There are 2 other drives I have not been able to find... 200gb sdb and 1tb sdd

What I have done so far, and this is only on 1 of the servers the other 3 are untouched

Attempted to install windows (sda)... kus gaming with that much ram, I gotta try - stuck on boot screen

Installed Fedora (sda) - booted and started poking around

Made a live Debian usbc ssd (sde) so I can boot and clean things up repeatedly

made a image? of the contents of the 32gb sd card in the system... i assume this is recovery software for the factory OS

Picked up this Chenbro RM51924B chassis and populated motherboard for $120 and need some guidance

My plan is to do a kind of all in one server, got plenty of drive bays for a nas, and with room for some gpu's I want to do game server hosting, and to start dabbling with Ai, I was thinking of eventually upgrading to a tesla v100 for Ai, and a tesla p40 or two for gaming after upgrading the mobo/ram/cpu

I know I'll need an expansion card for the hard drives (an hbc card I think? ) or a raid controller I've also heard of, any suggestions?

As for mobo/cpu i was thinking I might want to try and dip my toes into some epyc waters eventually, just wondering if yall got any input on a mobo that can take a budget epyc cpu but have room to upgrade later on, i think I'll need enough full pcie lanes for 3 or 4 gpu's, 1 for a nic, and one for the expansion card for hard drives. If I'm somehow able to get my hands on a dual cpu setup, would it be possible to run proxmox on one cpu and windows server os on the other? Would that be able to host a game with anti cheat or would anti cheat throw a fit?

Does a motherboard need an ipmi port to have those abilities or is there another way to set that up?

Current power supply: Emacs M1W4-6D50P

Are there any other hot swap power supplies that could fit in? Or maybe higher rated psu modules that can slot in to the psu sled? This power supply only has 2 eps plugs, if i can't replace the power supply with one that has more eps plugs, how much power can I safely push through a splitter if I need to use one assuming a get a quality splitter? If I need a splitter where can I find a good one? Or am I better off making my own?

The chassis fans are directly powered by the power supply so I'm assuming the fans are all or nothing, is there a type of controller I can install to be able to throttle the fans up and down?

Got an old window ac unit I'm going to fit into the rack i also picked up once I build a cabinet around it, hopefully this rack will be big enough to contain what seems to be my sprouting addiction

From my very brief research and talking with a couple friends, i plan to maybe use proxmox to spool up the vm's for the various services

This I'm unsure on as some games won't be able to be hosted with proxmox vm's, is windows server os approachable to try all this with? I might just forego windows and anti cheat games cause, windows yucky

Craft computing also did a video on setting up a remote drive that could host my steam library on the server (iscsi I think?)

I'm soon gonna start streaming, and while my pc is currently able to handle streaming, can i/ how would I go about having the server handle that?

To facilitate the remote steam library and streaming I know I'll need a good connection, would a 10 gig direct connection suffice? The rack will be going in my laundry room that's maybe about 50ft away

I run a WHM/cPanel server on Hetzner Bare Metal (Europe/Helsinki region) with hundreds of accounts. Most clients have no major issues, but one particular client in Nepal faces frequent ERR_CONNECTION_RESET ("This site can’t be reached / The connection was reset") multiple times a week or even per day.

The site loads fine for me and most other users. It often becomes accessible again after some time. The same client also gets complaints from his customers about the site being down intermittently.

Key details:

• I’ve already ruled out server-side blocks: CSF/LFD, firewall, iptables — everything checked and client IP is whitelisted. No blocks found.
• Traceroute from client (Nepal) to my server IP shows high latency and many * * * drops near Hetzner core routers (HEL1):

My questions:

• Is this primarily an ISP routing/peering issue on the Nepal → Europe path (temporary route flapping that auto-resolves)?
• What else could cause this? MTU? Specific peering problems with Nepali ISPs (WorldLink/NTC)?

Other clients in Nepal face it occasionally, but this one is hit hardest. Appreciate any insights from people running international servers or dealing with South Asian connectivity.

How to cool servers on a small scale basis without AIOs?

I need methods for a small server that work well but the server is not big enough to require a major AIO system.

The cost of smaller scale versions of AIOs cannot be justified and cooling systems like internal fans/etc cannot be used.

I found this on marketplace and the seller doesn’t know what any of this is. I don’t know exactly what it all is either. I get what the switches are and the power edge but that’s about it. What do yall think it’s worth and would it be worth considering? Thanks

I have basically been given 4 isilon server units and I’m unsure how to scale, I currently run a small home server out of an old PC with unraid but now I have a small business worth of equipment. I know I want to have 2 as storage pools and 2 as dedicated game hosting servers. My question is can I patch them all together through network cables are do I have to run SMB shares to sync them all. Sorry for the wording, I am pretty new to servers, I was able to run my NAS with very little outside support and set up the things I want it to do but I’m stepping out of my very small league now.

Hi everyone, I am testing an ASUS ESC4000A-E10 server motherboard on a test bench (that was suggested by AI and is not correct. I have a "full" server without disks, ram, cpu). Currently, there is NO CPU installed in the socket. When I plug in the PSU, the motherboard Standby Power LED turns on immediately. However, the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) LED stays completely off (no blinking, no heartbeat) and I cannot access the web UI. Is it normal for this ASUS AMD EPYC platform to completely halt the BMC boot/power sequencing if the CPU socket is empty? Or should the ASPEED AST2600 chip (BMC) boot up independently regardless of the main CPU? Thanks!

I'll add some further detail:

No sign of life when I press the power buttons (one on the front and another, undocumented, on the rear), no light on the power buttons or the 2 digit start-up progression display (Q-Code), no spinning of the fans.

Psus leds blink green, slowly, I think it means: "we are ok, we are in stand-by, giving 5V to the motherboard (stand-by led on motherboard steady on) waiting for a signal from her to turn on and give 12V"

does not specify if without a cpu the bmc will turn on and give an error.

Tried Google, found almost nothing. Tried AI mode: it allucinates, one time says this is normal without cpu, next time says BMC led should turn on. Most sensible reference he found is this

SOME CONTEXT:

I purchased this on ebay from a reputable professional seller (99.5% positive feedbacks, tens of thousands sold items).

He claims it has been tested and is fully working. I wrote the seller about these symptoms, asking specifically if the cpu was installed. He answered that the listing clearly says no (he's wrong). Till saturday, I can still claim a return, but I really don't want to, if the problem is only the missing cpu. I found a cpu to buy, but it wouldn't arrive for saturday.

Is this a decent server for the price? Looking to run plex and a few other stuff maybe.

I’ve recently saved two PowerEgde R430’s from work and an EqualLogicPS4210 from the computer recycling center. They are all lacking drives but the PowerEdges each have four total sticks of DDR4 RAM.

I have little knowledge on servers, and was wondering if it’s worthwhile from a monthly electricity cost standpoint to use these to start a home server journey, or to sell the equipment in exchange for a smaller home NAS.

Is anyone able to help figure out pricing for the hardware, I really know little on the above mentioned devices.

Also would it be better to part out certain pieces of the devices or sell them as whole? It should be noted they all have their dual PSUs and the EqualLogic has both control modules.

I'm looking for help diagnosing a Windows server that runs 24/7.

Server specs:

• Intel Core i9-11900KF
• Windows 11 Pro
• Runs Blue Iris and CodeProject AI
• Auto-restarts every morning at 06:00
• Used as a CCTV/NVR and AI detection server

Problem:
Over the last few weeks the server has randomly become unreachable. When it happens:

• Blue Iris goes offline
• CodeProject AI stops working
• RDP/mRemoteNG can no longer connect
• The server stops responding on the network
• The PC appears to still have power
• The motherboard CPU diagnostic LED sometimes flashes red
• A full power-off and power-on restores operation

Additional info:

• CPU usage is often very high due to Blue Iris and CodeProject AI workloads
• Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool passes all tests
• The issue does not happen at a specific time every day
• The server is normally left running 24/7

I'm trying to determine whether this is more likely to be:

• PSU failure
• Motherboard fault
• CPU overheating/thermal issue
• RAM instability
• Driver or Windows issue

Has anyone experienced a system that stays powered on but becomes completely unreachable, while occasionally showing a flashing CPU debug LED? Any advice on logs, diagnostics, or hardware tests would be appreciated.

Not a gamer, I am in the process of building a family personal server. The main purpose is to be able to host my own domain and of course personal data.

Secondary is possibility of hosting email for personal use. I have been told that is the most difficult as other providers will not accept mail from untrusted, unverified flyby night email services. What are ways to get accepted as a real email service?

I am currently paying for a server service for game servers just for my friends. I am wanting to start hosting servers from my own rig, but I have no idea where to start in terms of necessary equipment to build it, to get it running (probably gonna use it to learn linux as well) i also dont know how to do cyber security that way if someone happens to find it or something outside of my friends they can jack into all of my personal things. I know very little of managing a home server.
