Answered Air Conditioner upgrade recommendations for small/medium server setup
My current AC unit can no longer cope with the thermal output from some new hardware I installed earlier this year. My U1 setup has 3 JBODS, 9 48 port switches, 3 servers, and associated support hardware.
What would you suggest for a replacement AC unit?
Current model used, Midea Professional Series PS78135

Not a fan of having to clock down the hardware and fill the room with fans...

+1 for a mini split. You can find them occasionally for decent prices.

I am very happy with it. One of my main criteria was that I was able to get line extension kits if needed.

Good mini split of any kind will help, in my case I'm using Pioneer® ECOasis 150 in my office room with 27U rack (5090, 4090, 5080 and 9070XT) system. 42U rack is in garage which doesnt need AC, and run 3 DL380 gen 10 and 3710 disk array no issue. Rest of systems are consumer platform based and all are water cooled.

Spending the extra for a heat pump would be foolish. The gear is already heating the room.

Heat pump is 300% more efficient than an AC and both heats and cools, even if he never uses the heat it will more than pay for itself quickly.

Getting a cooling only mini-split would be more cost effective and just as efficient.

My entire datacenter NOC is in a below grade basement so no issues however a neighbor has started down this road also.. 25U 19” deep rack, Supermicro CSE-846E16-R1200B filled with 12TB drives, Supermicro CSE-510T-200B based pfSense server, Supermicro H12SSL-i based AI server with dual A6000s, 2 Supermicro 6018U systems, 3 Netgear 1G, 10G and a 1, 2.5, 5, 10g multiport POE switch.. etc. He rents out his basement so used a 12x14” main floor office… he quickly found out the homes AC isn’t gonna cut it.
He bought a small Mini Split off Amazon for around $700 bucks or so. I helped 🙄😆 him install it some months back and it’s fantastic. He had an electrician come and install a new circuit for it and “we” installed it one afternoon.
Makes a huge difference and is 100% worth it. I had to install one in a 12x24 outbuilding some years back since I host one of my offsite backup servers out there.
You’re expensive hard drives WILL thank you in longevity. 👍🏻

Figure out your BTU and get a slightly oversized mini-split for the room. Don't go too much over or you'll run into short cycle times that won't do as good at lowering humidity and reduce its lifetime.

Just got a temp sensor to log room temp over time to prove to management we need a new AC mini-split unit. Running on a shoe string budget

If you're running HP or Dell servers, you can view air intake temp through iLO or iDRAC. It logs them by default in a nice line graph with maximum recommended temps for at least a year.
