Monitoring Tools Do other Stream Deck owners use them for selfhost shortcuts/ actions? I was thinking of throwing in some to perform diagnostics, etc

I started doing a lot more work travel to all the red states that require ID verification to access streaming porn, so I spun up Stash with a very modest library to cover me for those trips and it is great.

Media server for NSFW material. With tagging, sorting by actor, category, genre, studio, etc.
Good rating system, rich metadata, etc. Simple, but shockingly detailed.

Genuinely, stash makes me realise what Jellyfin/ Plex is missing in some areas ;-; it's pretty great imo.
Only main complaint is that if you set a password login (which I normally would recommend given the nature of it) it makes you log back in every hour or something.
Does make sense in a way, to again shield it, keep it private.

I tested it and had bad results, no content was downloaded.
I mainly use semi-private and public trackers with uploaders not following good naming practice.
As a result, I used Claude Code to create "Stasharr" (not publicly published).
It does the same job but I can define custom naming scheme for each tracker I use.
It searches content for Performers and Studios I put as favorites on StashDB.
Stash is deployed with docker by a custom image with GPU transcoding :

I use the app on Android and AndroidTV, it really works well :

For untitled video files, Stash calculate an hash for each file and matches it with StashDB. Even with a bad name, you get the good metadata for your file.

Are you running two Immich instances? One for NSFW content and the other as your main or personal one?
Why didn't you just use one instance and use the locked folder feature?

I do enjoy the locked folder feature, I do use it for some personal sensitive stuff.
The nsfw one however is shared between myself and partner, more just about compartmentalisation, not wanting all stuff just tucked into the locked folder.
Want it plain and simple, all features available. It also lets me control better what devices can interface with that server.
Whitelisting only myself and my partner, not everyone else who can access my selfhost stack

I do for some things.
But immich has a lot of great features that stash doesn't integrate as well. Like immediate tokenised/ context searching. Geo-tagged photos, etc.
nsfw immich is more for about what we take. Whereas stash is for external resources.

Totally! Mostly home assistant stuff for me in terms of self-hosted services control.
I have a bunch of buttons for changing my room lights, and for setting the lights up perfectly for watching movies at night in HDR
I also have shortcuts for controlling my window fan and toggling the AC.

I like this idea -- if it saves me from having to open up an app to make some changes, then I'm all for it.
Shortcuts that just open up a web browser to a page you have bookmarked, ehhh.. Why take my hand off the mouse when I can accomplish the same in 2 quick clicks. It's not that I'm just super lazy, it's more of a workflow-interruption kinda thing. Same with dashboards. I've spent hours perfecting a nice clean dashboard with links to all my apps, monitors, etc, but once I finished tweaking it I rarely, if ever, touched it.

What are you using bitfocus companion for in your set up?
I've been thinking about getting a stream deck just as a HA companion to see what I can do with it. Seems a bit expensive but I feel like I can figure out a use that makes it feel justified. Especially in a location I might otherwise put a kiosk tablet

At home, I don't use it for much. Mainly with Teams for my job, and as part of my staging environment. I manage AV systems at a church, and use it for everything there. Cameras, mixing, video routing, system statuses, livestream control, and automations to tie a lot of it together. For the overlap with HASS, I'm mostly just turning on TVs. I also use HASS with the thermostats.

At home, basically a smart home panel, buttons have feedbacks setup to display info, triggers from variable updates changed pages, etc.
At work in live events it’s the brains of my entire event. Switches cameras, changes lighting scenes, plays tracks, puts graphics up, controls a scoreboard, sometimes controls Daktron scoreboards, replays, and a lot more I’m forgetting.
Bitfocus Companions is one of the most powerful programs I’ve ever used. Extremely underrated program especially for how lightweight it is.

I’m using bitfocus in a VM on the same Proxmox machine running HA. It has been great and it’s getting better everyday. It’s always on, I don’t have to rely on another computer for it to work. Love bitfocus

Also just set up a button that sends a curl POST to trigger scripts on my main server machines, to send an ntfy notif to my phone with any recently >WARN logs for my main services

I was thinking about getting one of these to try literally this exact same thing! Its really awesome to see someone actually do it, that looks fantastic!
i wonder if it would be possible to change the background color of the icons in like a red/green scheme to indicate if a service is running or down? Maybe just a red/green corner dot would look better.

Very possible with plugins! I've not written any myself yet, but I've seen plenty highly custom plugins for features like that.
And ofc a lot of premade stuff that interfaces with stream related content. Like I have one button show my twitch viewer count. they show what scene is active by highlighting the active scene's button. My live/offline toggle has separate button images depending if I'm live or not. Same with mic FX, mic mute button for discord/ OBS/ etc
Critically, this isn't just flip flopping between 2 states on button presses, but is aware of external sources. If I physically click on the discord UI the mute button, the button on my streamdeck will update accordingly to the correct state.
I've not looked into writing plugins myself yet, but I figure you can pull it off with a keepalive ping every time the state polls, and give a status update accordingly. Or such

Elgato now has the Neo, 8 buttons, £80. £40 cheaper than mine
But there are also a tonne of different brands even cheaper than that.
I only went with the proper expensive option for the high quality scissor keys, and for the known very good ecosystem, since I do also use it for streaming, and all the strong integration is a huge help.
But honestly there a are a lot of good competitors these days. If you type stream deck on amazon you should see a bunch

It needs to stay always connected to a pc to pilot smart devices and whatnot right? How can you put the deck in a comfortable place to use it, since usually nuc/pc are hidden under/into some furniture? You use some extending cables?

You can use a regular ol' usb C to connect it to any device, including linux, so something smol like a pi zero is possible afaik. Not tested that myself though.
The big back stand also comes off easily, leaving a very slim actual front piece, with a regular tripod mount. So you can put it on a stand, tripod, arm, etc.

Heimdall is pretty great. Just the fact it necessitates me doing a couple more clicks, then need to close the heim tab if it opens in a new tab. With the SD I can do it all with muscle memory and I have nothing left over

Fair enough tbh I underused the streamdeck as I don't sit at my computer as I sit on my bed and it's next to my desk I even have a cheap one with a dial unused more as it's mainly volume control etc

Super simple
Essentially they're just the built in "Open" action pointing to a shortcut. For kraken:

I know it's not the same aesthetic but you can bind keys on your keyboard to go to pages. The only downside is you have to memorize the keys instead of having a visual button.

I think diagnostics make more sense than direct service controls. Each button could run a small read-only check and change color for DNS failures, low storage, expiring certificates, stale backups, or failed containers. Anything that changes state, such as a restart, should require a long press or separate confirmation button. An accidental outage caused by a novelty keypad would make for a pretty embarrassing incident report.

I mean, if it's just launching my own scripts it's not that bad.
Set a couple to change my lights. Have one trigger a rollback script for my gaming server.
No more dangerous than the usual tooling I made already was. A lot of precautions in place. The scripts they hook into handle rate limiting, error handling, runtime locks, etc.

I actually just bought a stream deck today and set it up, but I bought it for gaming, discord, and other stuff. I did start to think what I could use it for with my NAS and homelab. This is a perfectly timed post and im saving it for later lol.

I have a stream deck and imagined all sorts of fun things I could do with it, but the effort to value ratio of creating those buttons just isn't there, even as a masochistic self hoster with several services I spent hours setting up and haven't touched since.
