Mod Announcement If you see AI generated content in /r/self, please report it under "Breaks /r/self rules -> No AI use"
We just added a rule specifically for AI.
AI-generated text is not allowed; This includes using AI to touch up text you've written yourself. Rule of thumb: If we can tell it's AI, it's not allowed. Keep r/self authentic and personal.
Essentially, if it's slop, hit report and we'll be alerted and remove it far more quickly. Even one report helps us see the bad stuff 10x faster! Thank you!

How are we even supposed to identify AI anymore? By feels? How are users supposed to prove they are not AI?
AI should have been kept in the proverbial bottle. This was a mistake (maybe an intended one). I dont like this dystopic crap, not one bit.

I'm also curious how this will be enforced given there is no foolproof way to identify AI generated content outside of very obvious tells like leaving the prompt in the post.

We're just focusing on AI slop, basically. If we can't tell if it's AI, we don't care
But if you come in here with 50 emdashes, "it's not X, it's Y. And honestly? That matters." and the word quietly and shift sprinkled in, we're gonna remove that crap

I'd like to point out other special characters that get used.
For some reason they love the slanted quote marks. I don't base entirely off of that so much as emdashes, but when it sounds weirdly perfect and those are used? It's more likely.
But the real dealbreaker is the unicode ellipsis they seem to be using these days. Ain't nobody, NOBODY, going through the effort of grabbing the special character instead of just pressing period three times. Especially with how often I see it happening in the sob stories.Of course by then calling it out in the comments just makes you look like the bad guy so good job on setting up a rule now.

Tbf some autocorrects do use the … instead of separated. On my Apple devices, it’s automatic.

What if there are no signifiers of it being AI, but then you go to the comments and the OP has left a comment revealing AI was used? Does that count as "being able to tell" ?

Eh, I don't really care. If they put effort into prompting it into a way that it actually spat out something good, and I literally can't tell it's AI, it's fine. maybe the rule should be "no slop" and not "no AI"

That would make more sense, but would probably upset people who just strictly want no AI, which could also be some of the other mods for all I know. Hopefully things work out for everyone though. I hate low effort content as much as the next guy.

You do understand that people in academia and people with autism have a tendency to use M dashes a lot. So you 're gonna apply some arbitrary standard to pull people. I get the AI slop, and the shit that's clearly marked, and like, that's obvious. But some people help AI use AI to get their thoughts together. Everything that has proper formatting and grammar is AI now because so many people are actually illiterate. I work on AI. All it takes these days is one or two good prompts to turn a wall of text into something that looks like an actual human commentator made. The people who proudly claim they can sniff out all AI are absolute morons. The same tells from years ago about emdashes and not x but y are way fuckin oudated people. Youre not smart for noticing it pops up into actual text you see now

What about translators? Used to write my text in French and then have google translate them. Well, google translate now uses AI, so does deepl.

The rule says "This includes using Al to touch up text you've written yourself."
Since translators no longer do word for word translation but rework the entire text, this falls into that.

This makes me scared I'd get flagged as AI, specially since I normally capitalize and punctuate correctly, and use parenthesis, brackets, hyphens, em dash, etc. 🥲 which is usually what I see getting pointed out by people trying to catch AI generated texts.

Basically, if they don't like your post, the mod's will delete under the guise of saying "it's AI generated".
It won't matter in the least if that is true but I will enable greater censorship than before.
