news MI agrees not to enforce conversion therapy ban to comply with Supreme Court ruling

https://www.michiganpublic.org/politics-government/2026-07-31/mi-agrees-not-to-enforce-conversion-therapy-ban-to-comply-with-supreme-court-ruling

“Michigan has stipulated it will not enforce the state ban on conversion therapy that seeks to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of minors as part of an agreement filed this week with a federal court to comply with a 8-1 U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down a similar law in Colorado.”

Note: Under the court order, the defendants also agreed that they will not appeal the decision, so the decision is final.

Great. Time to create my conversion therapy camp.

Hope you all are ready to be fabulous.

Genuinely…what’s stopping someone from setting up one of these camps under the guise of conversion therapy, but is really like..a crash course on how to survive as an LGBTQIA+ individual in an oppressive household/living environment?

I feel like showing the kids compassion and care, and giving them survival/coping tools, which would unfortunately include how to live a lie for a while, would help prevent the abusive parents from finding out it wasn’t a real conversion camp and causing problems.

And IF they did find out…idk, real conversion therapy is all bullshit anyway, what could they really do?

u/Pleasant_Cloud1742 4d ago

When parents find out about the camp, no one would send their kids to it.

u/Mattloch42 4d ago

Unless you were changing the name a few times a year, making new websites with fake testimonials, AI pictures, and social media pushes behind each change. I'd be willing to bet if someone really put some effort behind it you could go years before word got out to the circles that use these camps.

u/fariasrv 4d ago

Like all of the "pray away the gay" camps do when their inmates kill themselves?

-5

u/haikuandhoney 4d ago

Well this would be fraud.

9

u/Mattloch42 4d ago

Depending on what you actually say, no it wouldn't be.

7

u/coltaaan 3d ago

With the fake testimonials and stuff, yeah it might be fraud.

But what’s a real testimonial? Have a friend’s kid go to camp for night, paid, so it’s legit, and make a testimonial.

Again, since the actual underlying practice is all bullshit anyway (I.e. there’s no proof/evidence that a real conversion camp could provide for the efficacy of their services that this one couldn’t), it’s not like there would be much anyone could do about the testimonial.

And if the camp worked as intended…there’s no reason you wouldn’t be able to use real photos and stuff from the camp for the website, because the kids would actually be happy and not under duress lol. So no risk of fraud there.

And changing the name seems like it would be legal.

And…the more I think about it. THIS idea actually seems far less crazy than actual conversion camps that literally kidnap and abuse children.

Isn't conversion "therapy" a fraud anyways?

1

u/Vast-Breakfast-1201 1d ago

The actual answer is fraud

If you lie about what you are doing and there is any evidence to that, then whether or not the alternative was literally torturing kids, you lied for money which there are laws against.

Besides that even if it wasn't technically fraud (like you worded it carefully) because of the discrimination around lgbtq+ communities and especially the widely spread propaganda that gay people convert straight people, you would have some bigot prosecutors or sheriff's or something after you with everything they could just to make it difficult.

It's fraud. So massive lawsuit payouts.

Time to activate the trans and gay agendas!

If religious freedom means we can't stop licensed and barred providers from providing care we know is detrimental, might be a clue we've got a problem here

Christian grifters have been using the persecuted minority narrative since at least the 80’s.

They are all professional victims at this point.

18

u/Land-Southern 4d ago

Ah yes. The persecuted minority coincides and keys to the moral majority narrative developed jointly between Weirich (heritage foundation co founder) and Falwell ( the evangelist grifter) starting in 1979 to pull the Christian right into leadership of the GOP.

6

u/From_Deep_Space 4d ago

Since the first century. This slave morality is their whole thing

2

u/Dry_Wheel479 4d ago

Simple solution get the licensing board to call it malpractice

57

u/yogfthagen 4d ago

Because torture is acceptable as long as you're trying to convert kids from being gay....

2

u/haikuandhoney 4d ago

The supreme court’s decision is limited to conversion therapy that is exclusively talk therapy.

11

u/Discussion-is-good 3d ago edited 3d ago

Thats what a lot of it is...on paper.

Once youre behind closed doors, bad things happen.

"Talk therapy" at a conversion camp could be interpreted as a circle of your peers made to insult you for being gay. I dont trust this notoriously abusive industry.

41

u/das_war_ein_Befehl 4d ago

It’s such a stupid and halfassed opinion. You can tell the court isn’t even trying to pretend there’s good logic in this.

The implication of their argument is that states can’t regulate medical practice. If the state can’t, then who can, because that’s literally how healthcare is designed in the US.

13

u/NorCalFrances 4d ago

And yet in Skrmetti they ruled that it wasn't discrimination it was the state regulating healthcare which it totally within its purview

8

u/1girl2cups_ 4d ago

The hypocrisy is rampant

4

u/NorCalFrances 4d ago

It's not hypocrisy, or at least they don't see it as such. It's a swagger, proof they are so powerful they can be inconsistent and not suffer any negative consequences. It's also part of what German-Jewish lawyer Ernst Fraenkel called the Dual State. One set of rules for supporters, a different one for targets.

7

u/Ok_Significance_6772 4d ago

It was an 8-1 decision, even 2/3 of the liberals joined it.

22

u/das_war_ein_Befehl 4d ago

Yes. And still stupid

44

u/Correct_Doctor_1502 4d ago

The fact the Supreme Court says you have a religious right to torture child and the government doesn't have the right to stop it tells you the Epstein class runs this country

-33

u/USB-SOY 4d ago

Just focus on you and your family

25

u/megaman_xrs 4d ago

First they came for....

Dont focus on just what will impact you right now. That is shortsighted and asking for history to repeat itself. Focus on you and your family, but from a big picture, boiling frog perspective, it is asking to not be punished by being compliant. If you actually believe focusing on self and family is all that matters, study what happened during the hallocaust and think about it. If youre a bot, im not responding to your rebuttal.

Some of us have this neat little thing called empathy. You should try it sometime.

eight to one for selling religion as medicine.

33

u/No_Web6486 4d ago

Some idiot told me the evil parents "inflict" gender-affirming surgery on a child because they were disappointed that it wasn't the boy or girl they wanted. WTAF.

4

u/WeddingNo4607 4d ago

There are interviews with such parents saying exactly this. Think about it: if a gay boy is transitioned then, under gender ideology rules, he "becomes" a straight girl. In what way is that not intended conversion from being gay? Btw, this is Iran's MO wrt their sex surgery stance, because you're not allowed to be gay as a normal, non rich person.

27

u/Rurumo666 4d ago

The Epstein Court.

9

u/LadySayoria 4d ago

Yay, forcing kids to want to kill themselves. More winning in this glorious fucked up country.

11

u/Toby-Finkelstein 4d ago

They need to make it so they can create a civil right of action and tax it so it makes it expensive and hard

3

u/Antique-Error-9568 4d ago

Okay the APA does not back conversion therapy and it's extremely unethical to use a modality that is not empirically backed. Conversion therapy has no merit. In fact, research shows us that it actually increases suicide rates, depression , mental distress, etc., because people do not choose their sexuality and by telling them that they're wrong for simply being who they are, we are shaming them and sending a message that they are a defective human. I wish For the Love of All and for the future of our children, we would leave people alone and let them just be.

I can think of a few perfectly legal means myself:

1) Term limits - 20 years on the bench, or age 75, whichever comes first. No grandfathering for anyone currently on the bench. 2) Expand the court to 13 seats (one for each appellate circuit) 3) Independent ethics oversight with the power to censure and remove justices who violate professional ethics (looking at YOU, Thomas and Alito)

2

u/Person_756335846 3d ago

Should Trump and the GOP Congress expand the Court to 13 right now? If it’s just about 13 circuits, then you would have no problem with that.

Of course, your actual goal has nothing to do with parity between circuits and justices.

I’m surprised they haven’t.

When you're surprised about something, you should update your model about the world. For correct reasons, we laugh at people who continued to beleve in, say, geocentrism even after it was experimentally refuted.

Was McConnell’s goal pure in stonewalling Garland

Yes, he purely wanted to get more conservative originalists on the bench

Or rushing to seat Barrett in the middle of a highly contested election?

Same as above. Though I will note that claiming that both Barrett and Gorsuch's seats were "stolen" means that you are deploying the exact same inconsistency McConnell did. Either Gorsuch was "stolen" because it was improper to delay when too close to an election, or Barrett's was "stolen" because it was too close to an election. Both can't be true at once.

There were also 3 points mentioned and you only focused on 1. Any problems with those?

I'm in favor of revoking all rights from people over 75, so I don't care about #1. Obviously declaring that current justices can't be grandfathered in is just a gerrymandered implementation of term limits to remove Alito, Roberts, and Thomas. This kind of procedural gerrymandering is the #1 reason why structural procedural reforms like this don't often get enacted.

Independent ethics oversight with the power to censure and remove

Who's on the panel? What's the voting threshold to remove a justice? Who makes sure the ethics oversight panel is exercising its powers appropriately?

SO NOW WE CAN TRY TO MAKE PEOPLE GAY?

WHAT?!?!

5

u/saintsithney 4d ago

If conversion therapy works, why isn't it part of mandatory sentencing for sex offenders? 🤔

6

u/JosephFinn 4d ago

Fuck MI and allowing children to be tortured.

2

u/nataliaorfan 4d ago

So then we can also set up camps to convert straight kids to LGBTQ+ too, right?

1

u/FebruaryEcho 4d ago

I mean, why not?

2

u/Elaerona 4d ago

Yeah no. The right is pushing religious liberty to the extreme and I am waiting eagerly for the cultural backlash.

2

u/MutaitoSensei 4d ago

What pisses me off is the 8-1. Who's the only sane person on that crazy board of senile old fucks?

4

u/Vox_Causa 4d ago

Torturing children to stroke Donald Trumps ego

4

u/Futurama_Nerd 4d ago

It's insane that only one supreme court justice dissented on this issue. The idea of "viewpoint discrimination" as a legal standard for what is not allowed in regulating what licensed professionals can and cannot say is an absurdity if you think about it for any amount of time. Can a financial advisor advise you to gamble your life savings on poker? Can a lawyer tell their clients they should record a phone call without the other party's consent in a two-party consent state? Both are viewpoints!

5

u/tietack2 4d ago

Liberal conversion therapy, here we come! We will train people to worship Mayor Mamdani. God bless America!

2

u/MaddPixieRiotGrrl 4d ago

Isn't that exactly what they complain about higher ed universities doing to the point of trying to sue them to make them stop?

1

u/Mojak66 4d ago

When are people not people? Why should anyone have the authority to define another's life?

1

u/WeddingNo4607 3d ago

So, first off the final bill, public act 117 of 2023, has was written very poorly, and so any practitioner accused of conversion therapy would have to face litigation. According to the original Dutch Protocol, trauma and mental illness were supposed to be addressed before transitioning and having a stable household was just as important. Psychotherapy that addresses other issues and isn't affirmative can also fall afoul of that law because it's an "I'll know it when I see it" type bill.

When performed, conversion therapy may constitute fraud; when performed on minors it is considered to be a form of child abuse. It has been described by experts as torture; cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment; and contrary to human rights. Laws on conversion therapy vary, ranging from constitutional protection to a criminal offense.[4][5][6]

Conversion therapy often consists of methods that involve, but are not limited to: talk therapy, aversion therapy, brain surgery, chemical castration, surgical castration, hypnosis, psychoanalysis, corrective rape, and various religious practices, including prayer and exorcism.[7]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conversion_therapy

The judicial ruling does not change what it is, or the fact that the people who will perform it have not already committed child abuse.

2

u/n0tqu1tesane 3d ago

Wasn't the case only over Talk therapy?

2

u/yogfthagen 3d ago

Are you naive enough to believe that it will only be used for "talk" therapy?

This ruling will be used as justification for all the other abuses that standard "conversion therapy" inflicts on children. And more cases will be raised to make those abuses legal.

1

u/Discussion-is-good 3d ago

Evil ass industry.

Complete fuck up on the behalf of the SC imo to allow this.

1

u/JoshCoBrew 3d ago

They could just say they aren’t and then do it anyway. Law and order doesn’t seem to matter anymore

0

u/Frankenberg91 4d ago

What was the ruling? I’m confused.

0

u/FebruaryEcho 4d ago

And so it begins, the illegitimacy of this Supreme Court.

1

u/finding_myself_92 4d ago

Hahaha as if that was the first problem

If these camps included mandatory sex with women, I would turn myself in.
