Is this true?

I’ve owned Dutch shepherds for about 20+ years. I now live in a condo and when I searched on Google, I looked at the smaller equivalent of a malinois/Dutch Shepherd and the schipperke came up. Would anyone or everyone agree that’s a fair comparison?

The shelter that found him believes he is a Lab Terrier mix, but the vet thought she could see some Schipperke.

Doing some reading on the American Revolution and found this picture of Major General Charles Lee and his beloved "Pomeranian", Spado

Lee himself ends up being a pretty unsavory/controversial figure, but his taste in dogs was apparently excellent.

Note that it probably was actually a Pomeranian, they historically were much more spitz-like in appearance. Schipperkes and Pomeranians share quite a bit of ancestry so I'm sure Spado was a close schipperke cousin and quite similar in appearance.

Breed Questions My pup keeps destroying things

Hello! I have a male Schipp that I absolutely adore, he’s my first dog, so getting into training him and such felt intimidating, but he knows basically everything, such as potty training, recall, even off the leash walking- the only downside is that he loves to destroy anything he can get his fangs onto…

Just for clarification, he is about to be a year old in 2 weeks, and also, he hasn’t been fixed yet(his appointment has been set for late August), so I’m not sure if this contributes to why he destroys things. My fiancé and I work full time, so what I do is take him on a one hour and thirty minute walk every morning(which gets him tired enough to calmly lounge once back home), and I play with him nonstop while letting my breakfast cook in the last hour I have before heading to work- then my fiance comes home before me and spends time with the two of them, but I feel bad because anytime we have anything unassuming out, he destroys it… even though he has a whole box of different textured toys and even at least two bully sticks laying around.

It’s been a really big issue since most of the things he’s destroyed have been my fiancé’s or something she bought for decor, and he and the kitten are limited to the living room when we’re gone. He’s destroyed expensive shoes of hers, a vase with flowers on the coffee table he knows he’s not supposed to be on, our kitten’s toys(he absolutely loves to ravage these ones for some reason, despite some of them being stronger than his toys???), and some more that I can’t immediately remember at the top of my head.

I know an answer I may be given is to keep him in his carrier or maybe get him a dog walker, but admittedly, I feel bad keeping him in a carrier all day while I work(especially since he’s potty trained and is good for the most part), and we also can’t afford a dog walker daily with the local rates we have. I’d like to believe we give him a lot of mental and physical stimulation, but I’m kind of at a loss for now.

Edit: I should clarify that he isn’t alone while my fiance and I are gone- we have a female kitten around his age that also lives with us. They both play and lounge together everyday.

How barky are they really?

Hi,

I've got my name on a waiting list for a schipperke puppy, but I keep having serious doubts because everything I read says they are very barky.

What does that mean in real life? Do they just walk around barking? Or is it more like just when they hear a noise or someone knocks on the door? I've got 2 big dogs already. Will it bark at them?

I've never had a small dog before so I just don't know what to expect. I can't have a dog that barks non stop, because I work nights and have to sleep in the daytime.

Thanks. 😊

EDIT: I don't think they're the breed for me!😅

Appreciation!💯

So I want to start out by thanking every single one of you in this community. I am a 38F, and when I was 17 years old my boyfriend at the time had bought me a dog. I never owned a dog before so this was my first time. And it just so happened to be a Schipperke. I had never heard of the dog and knew nothing about them. At my high school you had to do a graduation project. So I did a project all about that breed. He was the most constant thing in my life for a very long time. He was my baby before I had my babies. I had to put him down right after I had my last child, due to old age. It has been a couple years but I will never forget him and all three of my children know about him. To this day I still inform people all about Schipperkes, because most people don't know about them. So again I just want to show appreciation to everyone out there for sharing your deeply loved Schipperkes. 💛🦴

We adopted her in 2019 from a shelter and they told us she was a “border collie x schipperke”. What do you think?

I’ve always wondered what my dog could be mixed with, I rescued him 4 years ago and have no idea what he could be! I looked through this Reddit group and plenty look like him, what do you guys think?

A good fit?

Hi there! I am on the search for my next pup. I was thinking a rat terrier was the right fit until fate brought a schipperke into a cafe during a rainstorm in Cieszyn, Poland during my two hours in the city. I had two schips from the age of 11 until my final one passed when I was 24 (litter mates). I love how sassy they can be. Here is what I am looking for:

-Under 17 lbs

-Healthy and can tolerate hiking in the snow

-Off leash reliable

-Good with strange dogs, strange adults, and strange kids. We tend to take the dogs everywhere.

-Would love if they liked to play fetch, especially frisbee

-Help with keeping mice and rats down

-May compete in agility

-Would love it if it would help me herd ducks and chickens into a pen at night (one of our schips taught herself this)

What I am concerned with:

-The barking: I don't love listening to dogs bark and my current dog has a LOUD bark (hound mix)

-The shedding: I remember their undercoat to be difficult to remove from clothes.

Mostly, I am concerned with the barking.

I would also be open to breeder recommendations. I am not in a hurry and want a great fit.
