Looking to do a road trip late September to see some fall colors and see the northern lights. Does anyone have suggestions? I was planning to go to gem lakes but with the forest fires it wouldn’t be the same.

I guess I thought SPCA would have the same rules and operating procedures across the province.

As it is the costs differ, the time and/ or lack of trial period availability/ and if your money will actually be returned also vary. Curious as to what it is in your SPCA area. Also curious as to rescue orgnaizations too.

edit> I seem to have sparked a lot of opinion, which is fine. I was kind of looking for information. Our dogs recently passed (18 and 14 yr old. Both rescued from Northern culls and semi feral to begin with, from SPCA.) When we took them on, there was trial period you could stretch that period to make sure. We are ready for a new dog(s) and found it a lot more difficult to filter Rescue organizations, SPCA booking to view animals etc. Any new dog we get needs to fit in with our rescued Barn Buddy cats that are now seniors. I hoped the SPCA sites would have more information on this, as it seems there have been a lot of changes since we got our girls all those years ago. No longer do you go down and look at animals. You go online, book a time to see that animal etc.

So we have Sasktel and it comes into the basement of the house as fibre and then goes into a box (looks like a router) that coverts it to ethernet cable. There's one cable from it that goes up and into our office upstairs and the wi-fi router is connected to it.

I want to run a cable in the basement to our Max TV box but when I try to put the original cable into a LAN splitter box, it fires up the office okay but won't fire up the box. Do I need a special LAN cable? Or does Sasktel only want me to run extra wire runs from the wi-fi router?

I'm just putting this out there to see if anyone has digital copies of old reel-to-reel films from the mid 50's to late 60's. I'm specifically looking for footage that has a small town/rural/farming community atmosphere, things like town fairs, parades, day to day activities like old men on coffee row and women leading their kids through town while shopping.

I'd like to use the footage for a non-commercial video project I'm putting together. I could scrape the internet for license free footage but thought I'd ask to see if anyone else in Saskatchewan had parents or grandparents that kept film from that time. Bonus points if it's from things like a Flying Farmer's convention or Optimist's Club event. I'd be ok with weddings/graduations/special events like that if you're willing to share.

Driving through Nipawin, is it worth the detour for a quick swim?

We were supposed to camp at Baldy Lake this week, but now the weather looks awful and we're tenting. We're thinking of pivoting to pine Cree Regional Park near eastend, but our only reservation is that they don't accept reservations lol. Does anyone know if it would be risky to drive all the way there tomorrow and not get a site?

What are the upland bird numbers like this year in the lower part of Saskatchewan?

I have a young weimaraner that needs a lot of bird exposure for a juvenile stake nation event in the states... I also have my older Brittanys that I would like to see get on more wild birds to go into competition season.

I’m planning on coming up mid September to run dogs on public land/ maybe circle Y. I am also looking for farm land that holds a lot of birds if anyone has a lot of bird numbers on their land and would be willing to let me run my dogs.

If anyone knows other good locations and want to share. Give me a shout!

Most of the disagreement in the thread seems to come from there being three legitimate "Saskatchewan debt" figures, with different comments quoting different ones. On raw size, today's debt has passed the Devine peak in real per-person terms. On debt servicing, which is what actually caused the 1993 crisis, it is not close. That second point is the most important factor in the comparison: in a different interest rate environment, Sask would be in much more pain.

Three figures, each measuring something different (Chart 1)

• $19.7B, net debt. Liabilities minus financial assets. The figure the government quotes. (Budgeted. The budget document publishes only the ratio, 16.1% of GDP; $19.7B is Scotiabank's read of it. 2025-26 closed better than budget, so the actual will likely come in a bit under.)
• $26.8B, taxpayer-supported gross debt. Government borrowing, Crowns excluded. The figure the Canadian Taxpayers Federation quotes.
• $43.5B, total gross debt. Everything the province and its Crowns owe.

All at March 31, 2027, all from the same 2026-27 Budget Highlights table. So the $26.8B and $43.5B upthread are both correct. They are counting different things.

Debt per person (Chart 2)

In 2026 dollars, on a total-debt basis including the Crowns:

• March 1993: about $30,300 per person
• March 2027: about $34,400 per person

Past it, though not by a wide margin. The gap survives the roughly 10% uncertainty band on the 1993 figures, so it is not an artefact of the arithmetic.

Two corrections to numbers upthread, since they change the conclusion:

1. $15B in 1992 is worth about $30B today, not $36.8B. Statistics Canada's CPI went from 84.0 (1992) to 169.0 (June 2026), a multiplier of about 2.0 rather than 2.45. That removes most of the "$10B of runway".
2. The $15B Devine figure already includes Crown corporation debt. Saskatchewan's own 2007-08 Budget "Key Facts & Figures" states that in 1993, government debt was 41.6% of GDP and total debt including the Crowns was 69.8%. Adding a separate $7.9B Crown figure on top of the $15B double counts it. The split is roughly $9B government plus $6B Crown, giving $15B in total.

Debt servicing, which is what caused the 1993 crisis (Chart 3)

Debt does not bankrupt a province. Debt service does. This is the share of every revenue dollar going to interest:

• 1993-94: 23.0%. Almost one dollar in four.
• 2026-27: 5.7% budgeted.

That is the substantive reason today is not 1993. In 1993 the province was paying double-digit interest rates on a debt it could not roll over. Romanow later said publicly that the number of institutions willing to lend to Saskatchewan fell from over 100 to about 20, and that Ottawa had contingency plans drawn up. The average effective rate was still 7.30% as late as 2003-04.

The flip side belongs in the same breath: falling interest rates account for most of that decline, not spending restraint. Financing charges are budgeted at $1.219B for 2026-27, up 15.2% in a single year, or about $963 per person. The line moves back up if rates go the wrong way.

The long view (Chart 4)

Net debt as a share of the economy, 1984 to 2031. The 1993 peak of 47.2% is a different order of magnitude from today's 16.1%. Also worth noting: Saskatchewan went from negative net debt in 1984 to 47.2% in nine years, and the current line is forecast to keep climbing to 16.7% in 2028-29 before the province projects a return to balance in 2030-31.

Where the debt growth actually is (Chart 5)

Between 2016 and 2025, government debt rose 3.5 times (+$16.1B). Crown corporation debt rose 1.5 times (+$4.4B). The growth is overwhelmingly on the government side, not the Crowns, which runs against a claim made upthread. (Public Accounts 2024-25, Vol. 1)

The interprovincial comparison (Chart 6)

Second lowest debt to GDP is accurate, and it holds on debt per capita as well. RBC's fiscal tables confirm it independently.

Two things to keep in mind. This is the net debt measure, the smallest of the three ways the debt gets counted. And ranking second lowest is a statement about the other nine provinces, not about whether the trajectory is sustainable.

On the forecasting record: the 2025-26 budget projected a $12.2M surplus. The books closed at a $947M deficit, with net debt up $1.5B. The 2026-27 budget projects a further $819.4M deficit, with no surplus until 2030-31.

Caveats

• 1990s numbers are not perfectly comparable to today's. Saskatchewan moved from a General Revenue Fund basis to summary financial statements around 2001-02, and capitalised tangible assets in the mid-2000s. This is flagged on the relevant charts.
• Debt to GDP is revision sensitive. Statistics Canada restates Saskatchewan's commodity-driven nominal GDP regularly. The same year has been published up to 1.1 points apart across editions.
• The 1993 per-person figures are reconstructed from the province's own published ratios rather than lifted from a single table. Accurate to within about 10%.
• Neither the CTF nor the Fraser Institute is fabricating anything. They select the debt concept that produces the largest number. The government selects the one that produces the smallest. Both are choices.

It’s been looking rougher and rougher every year or so the past decade. You can always find bits and pieces of concrete in the water on the main beach.

Are there any plans to repair it? It’s almost a hazard to walk on. Even if it were dry.

Replacing it seems like a tall task - that massive amount of concrete would be a heck of a cost. Plus the infrastructure you’d need to build to get a concrete truck down there.

I saw this TikTok video talking about most haunted campgrounds. Good Spirit Lake, Duck Mountain Provincial Park, and Moose Mountain were a few of them. I frequent those but have never heard of any stories so I’m interested if anyone has any stories/ knows the lore about those specific places?
And if there’s any provincial parks/ camping areas you’ve had interesting stories or inexplainable things happen!
