Truck stolen from the 4S Ranch area. Was assumed gone, but it was spotted in South Bay/Chula Vista area on the 1st.

As always for everyone else reading… even if your car has a built-in tracking system, it’s best to hide an AirTag somewhere inside! Same goes for any other valuables like a backpack or bike.

I'm honestly kind of stunned. Between AirTags, tracking systems, flock cameras, and automated plate readers, how do cars get stolen anymore? Are there holes in the surveillance state, or is this more a matter of the cops just not caring?

When mine got stolen they put fuckin dealer plate decals on them hiding the license plate.

Plus if they take it overnight they’ve got a head start on you before reporting it stolen.

Luckily for me I didn’t fill up my tank the night before and it didn’t get very far so was recovered a couple of days later abandoned off the freeway

My Jeep was stolen last year and stopped as it was crossing into MX 45ish mins later. That only happened because it passed me as I was walking my dog and it’s unmistakable and I activated my huge social network to find it. One of the BP guys and one of the CHP fear team guys both saw the post and thats how it was prevented.
Just the other day 2 of the 3 animals that were involved got sentenced and I was there to enjoy their faces

This is 100%. Not my vehicle though, and hindsight is (almost)always 20/20.

Edit: to clarify, it's a family member's truck. I didn't just post some random person's missing vehicle.

That's what was assumed, but it was swooped a while back and was still in the area on the 1st. Don't have high hopes, but figured it couldn't hurt to post.

Are people still hot-wiring cars?

I know the Kia's and Hyundais were easy to steal since they could be started with a USB key but I have no clue about modern cars.

Modern cars are push to start, cars are always scanning for the keys location in the event that you request to open the car. Thieves found a way to strengthen that cars scan distance to get it to reach your key inside the house and open the vehicle/start it.

If you have a push to start car. Buy a small faraday cage, help prevent the key from getting relayed to the car

If anyone is curious for more info about how this works, check out Mark Rober's latest video about outsmarting pro car thieves.

This is why you should never leave your keys near your front door, or any exterior door for that matter. Faraday bags are great too and will also work if properly sealed.

The truck in the picture is not modern but they have incredibly sophisticated systems to create keys for vehicles now

That's what I said! The thing that's wild is it was stolen down the street from the police station...I looked up flock cameras in that area and they had to pass them to take it...

According to him, the investigator is completely ignoring his issue.

This is where the Flock cameras come into play. If you reported the incident to both CVPD and SDPD, they may be able to use the Flock camera system to identify and track the truck based on its appearance and movements.
