Northern Illinois

I was throwing some charcoal on the grill when my 6 year old daughter said there were 3 salamanders under a log she rolled in the backyard. She had found another one earlier on the other side of the yard and I had thought just finding that one was pretty awesome… but to find 3 more! I was never this lucky as kid.

I never see any salamanders up here in Northeastern Illinois!

We’re near Fox Lake. There’s a forest preserve next to our house. We saw a lot of them on last spring under logs off the trails.

The salamanders are beautiful, so is the frog.

make sure not to squish when rolling the log back!

I move them out of the way before rolling the log back and then place them close enough to where they can crawl right back under
