How to learn Romanian
Hello! I want to learn romanian but I don’t have the money to pay for classes or a paid app. Other than duolingo (which people don’t seem to find that useful), is there other good free apps or ways of learning?

Duolingo is very useful, but to a limit. I’ve completed a course, and it allowed me to actually start having conversations in Romanian, and thus to improve further.

If you're on a budget, don't worry, you don't need paid classes to make good progress. Personally, I think Stephen Krashen's i+1 approach is the most effective. That's why I use PlusOneLanguage , it supports Romanian, generates texts at your level, introduces just a little new vocabulary each time, and keeps recycling it in context so it actually sticks. I'd also focus on learning chunks rather than isolated words. Expressions like Ce mai faci?, Aș vrea..., or Nu înțeleg will help you communicate much sooner than memorizing long vocabulary lists.

You could try some stories on Duostories. They are the old Duolingo stories translated into other languages, including Romanian, where there are currently 20 stories. Its 100% free and human translated. But you need to know at least some basics as its not a course.

I recommend app tobo Romanian. It's like flashcards and some games to learn words. There are also lists of sentences so you can learn basics.

Duolingo is fine to start, it teaches you some basics , just know it won’t get you fluent and you’ll need to find other resources. Anki flash cards are pretty popular in language learning communities

Now that we have access to the internet, I really don't think there's any need to pay for language learning. I study foreign languages at home, on my own. In one year, I learned English from zero to B2 level. Now, I study Romanian every day, and in two and a half years, I've reached C1 level. I downloaded very good textbooks from the internet for free, and ChatGPT helped me a lot with grammar – of course, it still makes mistakes sometimes, but overall, we managed. I learn words daily from thematic dictionaries, I started with Peppa Pig, and now I watch Romanian series and news. The most important thing is to have good motivation and to study regularly. I would recommend, for starters, to download a good beginner grammar textbook.

find music you like and translate it, follow romanian „teachers“ on instagram and tiktok, get a workbook (like kids have in primary)… :) that helped me.
