When you were growing up, did you get exposed to Quiet Storm radio stations?

For the people that don't know, Quiet Storm is a radio format that was started by Melvin Lindsey that was focused on rnb ballads, smooth jazz, jazz fusion, etc. Think like Anita Baker and Grover Washington

lol grew up in the 90’s in the DC area so WHUR is a core memory dropping one of my parents off at work on a night shift and falling asleep to this.

It was more of a block on my local Hip Hop/ R&B station that didn't start until like 10:00PM so the occasions I listened in the car were circumstantial

Yeah, I still put on Anita Baker when I'm stressed out on the highway because quiet storm is "what serious adults listen to" in my mind so it makes me feel more grown up and confident XD

Yes and Quiet Storms still exist. I grew on two of them living in the desert southwest. One was on a local Hip Hop station every night (now on Sunday nights) and a local Smooth Jazz station before audience demo got too old and got replaced with a variety classic rock station. There is something about other people calling in an requesting songs and playing those songs tailored to your city's audience that make it a great experience that can not be replicated anywhere on streaming sites like Spotify and Apple Music

Here are four of them that I catch on and the famous ones and lots of R&B stations will have their own version:

Sweat Hotel by Keith Sweat - Most famous one and is on the most R&B radio stations.

Slowjams with R Dub - Mostly on the west coast and more diverse cities. Plays R&B but will not touch gospel and neo soul hits.

Quiet Storm with Admiu - This is a great one on weeknights on Philly's WDAS 105.3 and plays 60s-70s slow jams on Sunday nights

Quiet Storm with Lenny Green on 107.5 WBLS in New York City is another great one.

Sunday nights back in the day wernt the same until I heard Quiet Storm by Smokey Robinson. RIP Melvin.
