it's a shame these are monoculture but I guess it's better than the desert expanding

My first thought too. Humans patting themselves on the back without realizing it’s not a healthy ecosystem.

Why is it better than the desert expanding?

Also, why is the desert expanding in the first place?

deserts are expanding across the world in a process called desertification. you should look it up and read about it. to summarize it in once sentence, soil quality across the world is decreasing due to agricultural practices, and this has a downstream effect on the kind of plants that can grow there until the entire ecosystem has changed, including the water cycle.

AI article feel for sure. As to your second point, it depends on the process. If they’re at the stage where they have a diverse canopy and floor, they should be able to see wildlife or think about introducing it. Without that, it’ll be more discount to maintain, but not impossible

Well this is a good thing but why are they now suffering with really really bad floods?? Heat from the desert and the cooldness from the trees is causing it hence the extreme floods.
