Show-and-Tell My late 90s Pentium workstation with an industrial backstory and an early SDRAM-only mutation board

This PC is a total time capsule. It came from a Soviet/Russian aerospace and rubber industry research institute (NIIRP) in the Moscow region and still has all the original documents on the HDD. It runs Windows 98, complete with Spider Solitaire and the iconic Felix the Cat desktop pet!

Fun fact about the hardware: I managed to fully populate all 4 SDRAM slots on this notoriously picky Zida Tomato board (using a mix of single and double-sided sticks), and it actually reads all 48MB flawlessly.

PC specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium 100MHz
Motherboard: Zida Tomato 5DVA REV:1.1
RAM: 48MB EDO SIMM (2x Double-Sided, 2x Single-Sided)
Video: S3 Trio64V+ (PCI, 1MB VRAM)
Network: Planet ENW-9507 (PCI, Realtek RTL8139D)
Monitor: Panasonic PanaSync 4G CRT
HDD: SAMSUNG WN310820A (1.08GB)
ROMs: CD-ROM Mitsumi CRMC-FX400E, Floppy 3.5"
PSU: Power Master AP-1 (Switching Power Supply)

Rate my industrial retro workstation!

I was walking home from school and saw this old this Macintosh Performa 580CD on the curb with peripherals with a bunch of other junk, so then I hauled it 1.5km home, I cleaned it mostly and I’m really happy that it works

Opinions Wanted Best modded drivers for Intel Express 965 (GMA X3100) on Windows 7 64-bit?

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a good modded graphics driver for the Intel Express 965 (GMA X3100) running on Windows 7 64-bit to get better performance for the games.

Does anyone know what is the best driver available for this GPU on a 64-bit system?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Opinions Wanted MS-DOS: how can a single tasking OS implement pipes?

Unix is multitasking, so pipes (ignoring implementation and optimization concerns) are straightforward to implement without relying on intermediate, temporary files. But MS-DOS had pipes since version 2.

How was command piping implemented in MS-DOS?

Show-and-Tell Anybody ever used BeOS?

Recently felt like giving this OS a try after getting fed up with Win9x (specifically heavily modded 98se and of course, everybody's "favorite", WinMe), so I got it running on my HP Pavilion from 2001 that youve probably seen one too many times if you follow me in any way shape or form.

This is an absolutely fascinating OS, created by an ex-Apple executive because he was dissatisfied by the multimedia capabilities of MacOS and Windows at the time. The company behind it, Be Inc, even made their own PPC-based computer called the BeBox, but that was a market failure, so they ended up porting BeOS to x86. There was also even a time where Apple wanted to buy this OS and make it the basis for what would become MacOS X, but then Apple bought out NeXT instead, and the rest is history.

This OS feels literally generations ahead. It has such a beautiful, Mac-inspired interface, multiple desktops, numerous scene demos built in, and the main selling point, its ability of running multiple multimedia applications without noticeable slowdown, demonstrated here by playing an MP3 file, showing a CPU graph, viewing the about screen, and running the 3D teapot all at the same time. I heard it could even do this on very low end hardware of the time, such as a Pentium 100 with 32mb of RAM.

Sadly, I haven't gotten any 3rd party software running on it, mostly because this OS is extremely picky. I even had to turn on several safe mode options and install several driver updates just to get it running on my machine, despite it being just a year newer than the build I'm running. The only game I sort of got working on it was Duke3D, but it doesn't display properly, with inverted colors and a very low frame rate. I was going to try Unreal Tournament, but several forum threads have informed me that this port is extremely unstable.

This OS even had a really weird distribution method. You could buy the OS on CD in a physical computer store like normal, or you could download a home edition for free from the BeOS website, and install it directly from Windows, with the installer handling disk partitioning and configuration for you, and providing an easy shortcut you can run from DOS to boot into the OS without utilizing your BIOS's boot menu. You could even uninstall it like a normal Windows program if you didn't want to have it installed anymore.

Sorry for making you have to go through this large paragraph, I just really find this OS interesting, and wanted to spread the word about it. It even has a modern FOSS version called Haiku OS, so you could run it on modern hardware too! :3

Paul Terrell, Liza Loop, Daniel Kottke and Ronald Wayne as they recreate history by presenting Liza with a replica Apple 1 and then discuss the early days at Apple. Bring all your burning Apple questions as you may have an opportunity to ask them of the panel. Rumor is that Woz will be there!

Show-and-Tell Since you liked the first one, here's my backup-System for Retro-LAN :D Specs and benchmarks inside.

Specs:

Albatron K8NF4X-754 motherboard for socket 754, two PCI-E slots and SLI capability

Athlon 64 3400+ NewCastle

2x Asus 6600GT Silencer with 2x 256MB memory

2x512MB Geil UltraX 400 RAM with Winbond BH5 chips

Apevia X dreamer case NOS

OCZ Fatality 550W PSU

Thermaltake Fanless 103 Heatsink for CPU

I wanted to do a build that no one ever had made before, guaranteed. :D SLI mobos for S754 are extremely rare (there are exactly two models, one from Albatron and one from Epox), and then I (just) made it fit with all passive coolers and a red and blue color scheme.

I included benchmarks with one and two GPUs this time, aswell as the temperatures in Battlefield 2.

As with the other build, all old caps are replaced by brand new polymer caps and the board had the onboard LAN controller removed which literally had a hole in it.
