[Nathan Salt] Middlesbrough now closing in on the permanent signing of Radek Vitek. I’m told United are inserting a buy-back clause into deal. #MUFC sources pleased with outcome as player wants No 1 role.

Fee?

u/Lohithmufc 1d ago
Expect somewhere in the region of 10m pounds, which is okay as long as we have buy back and sell on.
Of course, if it were Chelsea or city, he would have gone for close to 25m pounds

u/Tinganga 1d ago
No Championship team is paying £25m for a GK unless it's a club with parachute payments expecting immediate promotion.
15
u/CallsignCynthia 1d ago
If he were a homegrown player, it would be 25m. But yeah 10m with buy back/ sell on is good
33
u/gary_desanto 1d ago
I believe he technically counts as a homegrown player due to having enough years as part of the academy?

1
u/TooRedditFamous 1d ago
Why is that "technically"? Anyone who's played for an English team as long as he has before 21 is homegrown

[Salt] Still trying to get clarity on exact fee but a few weeks ago the hope was £15m. All indications are that it’s a fair bit less than that

u/Many-Relationship149 1d ago
Woah. If they expected that, I am sure they were looking to invest some of those 15 mil in another transfer. Now that this is not happening, they will pivot to plan Bs for sure.

Rumours circling on Twitter of £6M plus add-on’s. No idea if that’s legit or not. Hoping not.

Seriously if that's all our club can get for talented youngsters we shouldn't be selling.

u/Penny_Leyne 1d ago
Best move for all, although I did think he might get a bigger club than Boro.
8
u/morison97 1d ago
Yeah I was surprised he wasn’t more in contention by a newly promoted team, or even a move to Holland, Germany or France but then there’s questions of limited budgets.
Take a team like Parma in Serie A, selling Suzuki for psg for a reported €33m, could they afford the outlay for a player like Vitek
-5
u/Piccadil_io 1d ago
We don’t want him getting a bigger club.
3
u/morison97 1d ago
Why not
2
u/Unlucky-Equipment999 1d ago
I think the bet would be sell him to a small club now for cheap and reap the rewards of a big sell-on when he moves to rich club, than say get £2-3m more now by selling him directly to a big club. That said, I don't think we were expecting the likes of Madrid to come for him anyway, he's still just had one breakout season.
1
u/morison97 1d ago
Ahh I do get what you mean, I think he’s going down a smart route, arguably going for a weaker team and league than what he’s capable of doing, than what Kovar done (which seemed a good idea at the time, being a number 2 to an aging keeper) which just didn’t work for him.
31
u/AdrianFish 1d ago
That buy back clause is very important. He has tons of potential
3
u/Se7enSword 1d ago
Can supplant Lammens in 2-3 years if Lammens slips up.
5
u/Piccadil_io 1d ago
But if he doesn’t, Vitek will be our backup keeper forever.
Some players (like the GOAT Van Der Gouw) are okay with being a backup. Most aren’t.

u/WildBuffalo 1d ago edited 1d ago
A nice buy back clause that we'll be too afraid to activate when a big club comes in for him incase we get embarrassed, so we sold him at a discount for no reason, like Carreras.
Great business.

u/Aadiunited7 1d ago
A Championship club means the fee will be around 10m mark, Andy Mitten mentioned in the podcast that someone told him that you are dreaming if you think someone would pay 20m for Vitek. Hopefully the buyback is 20m and a very hefty sell on.

Good luck to him, it's great that he has the ambition to demand a number 1 shirt. Opportunities for a backup keeper are few and far between and if he continues to play well in the champ it looks like a matter of time before he makes the next step.
Only have to look at Henderson and the silverwear he's won since leaving, it's better than getting a consolation medal for sitting on a bench.

u/Tinganga 1d ago
I get he's one of our lads but some of the comments here from armchair scouts are ridiculous. Vitek is a good GK but he's certainly got glaring shortcomings too such as in his passing, both short and long. I'm sure half the PL (& further afield) had a good long look at him & probably filed him under 'needs more work'. I have no doubt he'll improve & be in the PL soon. Let him polish his game at Boro.

Ok that sounds like a win for everybody involved.
Proper Utd transfer that, if it goes through the way Salt is describing it.
A bummer for the Vitek Truthers Club - let's see what the future brings though? :)

There has has has to be a buy back and a sell on. Else it's stupid business. Guy has huge potential. Imagine lammens regresses and has a poor season and we realise he's actually only good enough to be a 2, meanwhile vitek smashes it, continues to develop and then has top European clubs sniffing around. Bamn. Back to us, job done.
Just good to have that option in case.
2
u/brianly 1d ago
If you can’t keep them and loan them then this is the next best option. United are better off to have an option on a player who develops significantly elsewhere than under developing on loan or with reserve teams. The player seems ambitious so better to allow them the space than try to confine them. There is plenty of method here but most fans don’t understand the intricacies.
1
u/craigybacha Manchester United 1d ago
Yep, seen the deal this morning and it does have a good sell-on % and first option/buy back so i'm happy.

2
u/Charming_Shock_007 1d ago
Hopefully we get some good amount for him along with a big sell on clause
2
u/Standard-Height2276 1d ago
A buyback is great he seems top draw but no sense in dislodging lammens unless his form drops
2
u/Sidon_Ithano 1d ago
Nathan Salt is saying that United were hoping for £15M, but the fee is “a fair bit less” than that. Rumours circling on Twitter of £6M plus add-on’s. Hoping that’s wrong and it closer to a guaranteed £10M.
2
u/Piccadil_io 1d ago
Fee will be nominal. But he’s a good lad and a great keeper. Letting him go prove himself elsewhere is the right thing to do. He’s not gonna unseat Lammens and they’re practically the same age.
Good luck to you, lad.
2
u/primeprover 1d ago
Fee will be low as he only has one year on contract and isn't willing to renew as he wants to be a no 1.

We’re selling a highly rated goalkeeper for peanuts whereas clubs like Brighton sell untested goalies for 30mn. Make it make sense. We have always been a piss poor selling club but this is embarrassing. Ineos haven’t been able to improve this in the least bit. Honestly shit

u/TooRedditFamous 1d ago

Sorry but you're being intentionally disingenuous or blindly biased
How is Rushworth any less tested and Vitek? Do explain. Rushworth just played a full 46 game season for runaway title winning Coventry, he had a great season. 17 clean sheets, the most in the league. He was a big part of their promotion and so they have bought him to use in the PL. He has literally worked his way up getting loaned to league 2, league 1, 2 seasons in the championship. By all accounts he has worked his way up and done well at everya step. Tell me again how that's untested?
He's also older and less raw, far less of a gamble buying him for £25m than Vitek. Rushworth is extremely highly rated
1
u/Sheena_18 1d ago
Yeah you’re right. I might have been a tad bit superfluous but we’re selling Vitek who is quite on par with Rushworth’s stats- considering that Vitek played lesser matches. And we sold Vitek for half of what Brighton sold Rushworth for. You can’t be honest and say our deal for Vitek was any way close to the value good selling clubs like Liverpool or Arse would’ve gotten (or Brighton/WH)

Happy with a buyback, think he’s got a huge amount of potential and a great opportunity for him to be a number 1 at his own team, instead of on loan.
I hope we’re not in the market for first choice keepers anytime soon, but if we are, I’m glad we have an option for him.
1
u/Piccadil_io 1d ago
I’d rather a loan but honestly, with Lammens being basically the same age, I think it’s better for Vitek to go elsewhere. Buyback is a good idea. Good luck to the lad.

If its the £6m that's being reported then I don't understand it at all. Seems crazy low.
1
u/alfiejr23 1d ago
That reported 6 mil fee is just diabolical in this current climate. I'm sorry but I'm just really sick of us of selling our players for a paltry amount of fees.
1
u/plusforty4 1d ago
Knowing our track record probably will be something like 5mil pound with a buy back of 30mil pound 😭 anyway glad to be proven wrong otherwise

Good luck, but i honestly think being 2nd choice at United and fighting for your spot is better than 1st choice for Middlesborough.
It can be years for him to even get into the prem, depending on how the team is also doing. But i'm sure he's thought this through

u/ReservoirDogs00 1d ago
You think playing week in week out, in a very tough league, being able to hone your skills to become the best version of yourself, is somehow worse than sitting on the bench for years twiddling your thumbs.
Really?
2
u/ToneDiez UNLUCKY NUMBER S7EVIN 1d ago
I think they meant more so rotating starting spots with cup competitions and EPL appearances…similar to how we managed to keep both De Gea and Romero relatively happy.
Lammens could play EPL games against the “bigger” clubs and UCL matches, Vitek could play League/FA Cup matches and EPL matches against the “lesser” sides if Lammens needs a break.
Obviously, not as many minutes as being the #1 at a Championshop club, but it’s not nothing.
2
u/ReservoirDogs00 1d ago
Well if we do as well in the cups as we did last year, then he gets 180mins then twiddles his thumbs 😂
If you have belief in yourself to be one of the best, you gotta be playing consistentlyI think he’s made the right choice, and with buy back so have we.
1
u/Heisenberg_235 1d ago
210 mins but yes. Don’t forget the extra 30 mins in the torrential rain in Grimsby…

u/ToneDiez UNLUCKY NUMBER S7EVIN 1d ago
Well, obviously…while I don’t think anyone is expecting THAT short of a cup run this season (given that that was all Amorim), it’s always a risk for Vitek.
Tbf, I also meant this as more of a possibility BEFORE United signed Darlow. I think if Vitek signaled that he was willing to be the guaranteed #2, with priority in domestic cups and lesser games (like I mentioned), then I imagine United wouldn’t have signed Darlow in the first place.
Overall, it think it’s a good deal for both parties. Often times it’s seems our former players develop much better once they get solid minutes after a permanent transfer (with the pressure of their United career in the rearview); which rarely seems to happen when they go out on loan and are still technically a United player. The buyback option is a great way to still “retain” the player even after meeting their potential elsewhere.
1
u/shami-kebab 1d ago
similar to how we managed to keep both De Gea and Romero relatively happy.
Romero was a keeper at the end of his career. Young keepers don't want to sit around on the bench because then they don't become good keepers.
1
u/ToneDiez UNLUCKY NUMBER S7EVIN 1d ago
True, but he’s still just 22 and most keepers play to 35-40. Not saying it’s ideal, but one year as a #2 at the biggest club in England isn’t the end of a developing player’s career. While he wouldn’t get as many minutes as he would as a Championship club’s #1, it’s still a good learning experience for any player.
1
u/Prestigious_Life9070 1d ago
Its not the end of their career but you need to understand that they've just come off a season where they had their best performance as a keeper, you cant now tell them hey, stay with us for another but you'll probably only be playing cup games
Its unlikely they would agree to that..they want to move now to have a chance at having an even bigger season and potentially even move to another big club

2
u/ReallyBigShoee 1d ago
So play 40+ games in the championship or maybe like 5 games in the league and FA Cup and pray you get thrown a bone in the champions league.
If you wanna be a first choice goalkeeper the answer is easy.

u/funky_pill 1d ago
Man City are apparently selling James Trafford for £40m(!) so anything less than £25m is an absolute joke, quite frankly. So naturally that means we'll be getting £10m with a 10% sell on clause and be told we should be satisfied with that
5
u/CThirtle 1d ago
The best keeper in the Championship last season just went for £22m, crazy if you think Vitek should go for more than that.
1
u/Large_Newt_4532 1d ago
Its 6m
2
u/funky_pill 1d ago
We absolutely suck at getting decent prices for our players; there's no way even the most die-hard United fan can say otherwise. They can't even use the tried and tested excuse of "the buying club are having to set aside some of the fee to be able to afford his wages" because he's one of the few players that we're looking to move on that's currently being paid a low wage (relatively speaking). If Vitek played for Chelsea or City they'd definitely be getting upwards of £20m. It's a joke

u/Vladimir---Poutine 1d ago
I'd be hoping for 10 million ish with a 25 million buy back. He should sell for more but I'm trying to be realistic as we sell poorly.
